MASS SCHEDULE
GIRARD Sat. 5:30pm Sun. 10:00 am ARMA 4:00pm 8:00 am

Notes From the Pastor: Happy Mothers Day to all our mothers! Though Mothers Day is not a religious celebration, it has a deeper religious significance. Just as a human person is sacred, so is the womb and motherhood itself. The womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary is paralleled to the ark of the covenant. Since we are all another Christ by baptism, our mothers womb and for that matter all womb too are holy. Lots of Scripture passages express the importance of mothers and motherhood. For the Lord sets a father in honor over his children and confirms a mothers authority over her sonsthey store up riches who respect their mother those who obey the Lord honor their motherthose who provoke their mother are accursed by their Creator. (Sirach 3:1-16) Blessed John Paul II has expressed in his apostolic letter Mulieris Dignitatem number 6, paragraph 17, that virginity and motherhood as two particular dimensions of the fulfillment of the female personality. In the light of the Gospel, they acquire their full meaning and value in Mary, who as a Virgin became the Mother of the Son of God. These two dimensions of the female vocation were united in her in an exceptional manner, in such a way that one did not exclude the other but wonderfully complemented it. As we appreciate the gift of our mothers, let us continue to pray for them and for the gift of motherhood, that Gods will be fulfilled through our mothers and motherhood as a vocation. Our CCD classes will culminate this Wednesday the 16th. We congratulate our CCD teachers, volunteers and our kids for all their hard work and sacrifices. Let us continue to pray for our kids that all they have learned will sink in their hearts and will bear fruit in their actions. Reminder to our kids and parents: kids are all invited to join Totus Tuus this summer, July 22nd to 27th. Memorial Day is coming! We will be having a mass at Greenbush Catholic Cemetery on Friday, May 25th, at 7:30 PM. You are all welcome. Then on Monday, May 28 th Memorial Day, rosary will be said at the cemetery at 9AM for the eternal repose for all our departed loved ones especially those buried at that cemetery. God bless you all! Fr. Roger CCD Announcements ** May 16th will be the last CCD class for this school year. Hope you all have a fun & safe summer! See you at vacation bible school! Jesus Ascension: Observed Next Week Of the many different explanations of the Ascension, I remember Father McElwees best: When talking of the mysteries of the faith, our conception of God was simple when we were little. We began to change, but God DIDNT!! The problem is that some never change and grow up in their thinking about God, but remain the same as they did as a child. Ascension is important because its connected to the Incarnation. At the Incarnation, God and Man came together with Mary, and Jesus was conceived. To be human, you need a body and a soul. Jesus became Man. To fully redeem us, His body and soul had to go back to Heaven. Ascension is where Jesus returns His body to God--its an extension of Christmas and the Incarnation. At the Assumption, Marys Full Being (her humanity) was taken to Heaven. Ascension is not so much Jesus is leaving us; its that God is now WED to His People! So, if you want to see Jesus, dont look to Heaven. He or she is seated right next to you!!

CONFESSION Sat. 2:00-2:45pm 3:15-3:45pm Weekdays before Mass; anytime by appointment.

Matthias: New Man Among Jesus Apostles This coming Monday, May 14, the Church observes the feastday for St. Matthias, who, according to Catholic writers, replaced Judas Iscariot who had hanged himself after his betrayal of Jesus. Matthias is mentioned only once in the New Testament, specifically in the Acts of the Apostles where St. Peter proposed to the Eleven in the Upper Room at Jerusalem that another Apostle be chosen to replace Judas. ACTS describes it, They put forward two: Barsabbas, surnamed Justus, and Matthias. They prayed first, then drew lots among them. The lot fell upon Matthias and he was named the Twelfth Apostle. 1:23-26 Matthias was a friend of Jesus, a constant companion from Jesus baptism until His ascension. Matthias mission took him into Judea, Turkey, Ethiopia, and Cappadocia and to the coasts of the Caspian Sea where he suffered much from the barbarians. Finally, he was martyred by the sword. The date is unclear since it was a first century event. His body was brought to Jerusalem, and from there to Rome by St. Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine. Month of May During the month of May, the rosary will be recited before the weekend Masses, so please come early and join us.

Mothers Day Ironically, a man, Frank Hering, from South Bend, Ind., delivered a speech in 1904 to his local Eagles Lodge that set in motion the creation of Mothers Day. In 1909, he became the Grand Worthy President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and continued to promote his idea of setting a day aside each year to honor mothers. Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia joined in the campaign and she selected the 2nd Sunday in May. Because her own mother had already died, she wore a white carnation to church, which also began the tradition--white if Mother was deceased and red if she was still living. The irony continues next month when we mention that a woman, Sonora Louise Dodd, of Spokane, Wash., encouraged her local Ministerial Alliance to honor fathers with a special day in June. As He was about to give up His Spirit, Christ spoke from the cross to His Mother Mary. Many times, just before we die, what we have to say is special. Jesus wanted to stress before the world, the concern and love that His followers should always have for their mothers. When Jesus spoke to His beloved discipline, St. John, and said, Behold Your Mother, He turned His own Mother over to us from Calvary. As we honor our Mothers this weekend, we realize that were acknowledging that they are, and have always been, the chief support of our nations morals. Our mothers have influenced the formation of such moral values of truth, justice, decency, purity, and respect in our lives. We pray that they will continue to arm their children with these virtues. In St. Johns gospel, Jesus tells us clearly that He will not leave us orphans. Often, our concept of orphans means one who has lost a mother or father or both in death--someone who has no one to care for him. But, Jesus was speaking of spiritual orphans. Our Father was His Father, spiritually, and we recall that He gave us Mary as Our spiritual Mother. We become a spiritual orphan when we sin, and you might say that Jesus also took care of that by giving us the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession). We are the children of God and thats what good parents do. Thank you, mothers, for our lives, and for the endless sacrifices you have made for us and continue to make. May God bless all mothers today and make them more conscious of their dignity. Lets all be grateful to God for the special blessing of having a good Mother. We can show her our gratitude by practicing the Christian virtues that she taught us. Articles by Marcel Normand IN HIS NAME The IN HIS NAME dinner served on Thursday evenings has been very well received in our community. We have been blessed with an abundance of hard working volunteers. Thanks to each and everyone of you who have contributed to its success and to those who have made monetary donations which are needed to cover the costs of the items not provided by the government. Anyone wishing to donate money can leave it at the church office in an envelope marked IN HIS NAME or mail it to Marita Lopeman at 87 W. Lake Rd, Farlington, KS 66734. If you wish to make an actual food donation, call Marita (362-3168) to see what items she needs.
