Race to help raise heart awareness
By KEVIN CANESSA Jr.
The Washington Twp. Sun
It can only be described as any
parents nightmare.
The phone rings at home, and
the caller tells you youve got to
get to the hospital and fast.
Something has happened to your
son and no one seems to know
why.
For Mark and Diane Anderson,
it was that phone call on Moth-
ers Day in 2005 that changed
everything in an instant. By the
time they arrived at the hospital,
their son, Brian, just three years
removed from being a senior at
Washington Township High
School, was dead.
He was just 21.
And he was no ordinary 21-
year-old. He was a vibrant 21, his
mom, Diane, says. And he had a
love for life and for those around
him.
Brian was an honor student at
Washington Township High
School he graduated fifth in his
class and spoke at graduation,
Diane says. He always said that
his real challenge was playing the
sax. He was president of the
marching band and enjoyed play-
ing first chair sax in concert
band.
After he left Washington Town-
ship High School, Brian went on
to study at Villanova University.
Just how bright was he that he
was able to go to Villanova and
study one of the more challeng-
ing majors?
He was ready to graduate from
the school a year before those he
entered with.
Brian died two weeks short of
graduating from Villanova, an
electrical engineering major,
summa cum laude, Diane says.
He (was to have) graduated from
Villanova in only three years. He
received a job at the prestigious
Lincoln Labs/MIT in Boston.
But it wasnt all about academ-
ics for Brian. In fact, there was a
lot more to him than just his stud-
ies.
Most important about Brian
is not his academic achievements,
but his great personality, Diane
says. He had a contagious sense
of humor and loved helping peo-
ple in any way he could. He was a
loyal friend, wonderful son, and I
used to say he was my gift from
God, and a supportive brother to
Kevin.
Too young to die
Generally healthy, Brians
death came as a shock to every-
one who knew him, especially his
parents, they say. And yet, the
condition that cost him his life
was one that is rarely detected
until its too late.
Brian was a healthy, happy 21-
year-old. He turned 21 on May 1,
2005, Diane says. On Mothers
Day morning, we got a call from
his friends explaining he was at
the hospital. By the time we
reached him, he had passed. The
diagnosis we received from the
coroner was possibly Long QT
Syndrome, a heart arrhythmia
that sometimes has sudden death
as its first sign, and cannot be de-
tected until after death.
Brian was such a loving son.
On his dorm room desk, his
friends found a Mothers Day card
Special to The Sun
Runners prepare to race at last years BA5K, an event to keep Washington Township High School grad Brian Andersons memory alive and to
raise awareness of heart arrhythmias. BELOW: Diane Anderson shares a holiday hug with her son, Brian Anderson, who lost his life suddenly
in 2005. His memory lives on in a yearly Mothers Day run in Washington Lake Park.

Mayor encourages residents
to attend public hearing
Mayor Barbara Wallace is en-
couraging residents to attend the
public hearing for the 2012 munic-
ipal budget, scheduled for
Wednesday, May 9, at 7 p.m. With
money budgeted for a long over-
due capital and road improve-
ment program, Wallace urged the
council to act responsibly by lis-
tening to the public, reviewing
the fiscally sound document and
enacting it.
My administration has spent
months building a sound budget
from the ground up, said Wal-
lace. We found greater than a
million dollars in savings over
last year by challenging every sin-
gle line appropriation, even while
funding a down payment for a $6.9
million capital program.
Wallace challenged members
of the council to move the budget
process toward conclusion and to
schedule a public hearing for the
capital bond ordinance.
We need to act swiftly, so that
the township does not miss the
warm weather window for con-
struction, Wallace said.
Since many of the materials
used to construct roadways are
cold-weather sensitive, construc-
tion needs to begin during the
summer months. Construction
could commence approximately
60 days following the approval of
the capital bond ordinance.
Wallace recently presented a
$35.3 million budget that included
a 1.98 cents increase in the tax
levy. During the first budget work
session of council, Wallace of-
fered a proposal that would fur-
ther reduce spending by $285,000.

in our opinion
D
o you have an extra $1,300 that
you dont need and wouldnt
mind giving to the govern-
ment? Didnt think so.
But, if you live in New Brunswick,
your household is on the hook for
$1,330.68 when it comes to covering ac-
cumulated sick and vacation time for
public workers, according to the gover-
nors office.
Statewide, the governor estimates
that accumulated sick and vacation
time total more than $825 million on
municipalities books.
Seems excessive. Or, rather, just
plain wrong.
As one of the exercise gurus from
the 80s or 90s said: Stop the insanity.
The Star-Ledger last week had a
great report on how a number of polit-
ical figures stand to cash out hand-
somely when they retire. It also points
out that, while some reform was
passed in 2010 capping new employees
payouts, theres still a lot of political
wrangling going on. The newspaper
reported that the Democrats want to
allow public workers to keep only the
time theyve accumulated, while Gov.
Christie wants to force employees to
use banked time when taking days in
the future, thereby reducing the num-
ber of payable days upon retirement.
For those of us in the private sector,
chances are the decision already has
been made: Were not banking any-
thing. Were lucky to have a job. Were
fighting rising health-care premiums
and the like, while probably not get-
ting much of a raise if any raise at
all.
So, the whole concept of banked
sick pay is foreign to us. Politicians
should take note.
It seems the governor and the De-
mocrats both recognize the larger
problem here, and, in fact, have
worked to address it moving forward
with new employees.
Lets hope that they can reach an
agreement on the details. Taxpayers
are footing some mighty big bills
now and will be in the future.
Sick means sick
Sick days are for when you are sick, not for when you retire
Sick day reform
The governor and Democrats already
have reached an agreement on bene-
fits for new employees. Now they
should be able to work out the details
on the big bills for which taxpayers
are still on the hook.

Ensuring his legacy remains
The Andersons so loved their
son they wanted to ensure his
memory would live on for ages to
come. It was a neighbor and
friend who first came up with an
idea to remember him through a
5-K memorial race. And now,
years later, the race is an annual
affair and has been since 2006.
My neighbor, Kristine Welsh,
came up with the idea. She asked
me to choose a date and I chose
Mothers Day not only because
it was the day he passed away, but
because I didnt want Brian to
worry about me. He told me
shortly before he passed that he
may not always be home for every
celebration, but he would be with
me on Mothers Day. That is what
Brian was all about.
In addition to remembering the
life that was Brians, the Ander-
sons also want the annual race to
bring awareness to the affliction
that took their sons life. Though
Brian showed no signs of trouble,
that doesnt mean thats always
the case for those with Long QT.
This is a syndrome that does
have symptoms in some cases,
Diane says.
This years run
As always, the Brian Anderson
5K will take place on Mothers
Day, Sunday, May 13, at Washing-
ton Lake Park. Registration be-
gins at 7 a.m. and the race and
walk begin at 9 a.m. Immediately
following is a kids run.
The first 5K, in 2006, had 100
participants. Last year, it grew to
1,000, Diane says.
Theres music, food and prizes,
clowns and face painting and an
overall celebration of mothers

you are guaranteed a BA5K T-
