Presidents Message
Hello Everyone,

Here it is, Board nominations already. This past April meeting we had a few members step up for positions and I thank all of you past and future for taking us to the next level. If you are interested in any position please dont hesitate and call me for more info or how you can help. It is imperative to fill all elected and appointed positions in order for us to move forward. Think you might want to help out but not sure how? Call me. We will start forming committees to help with the bigger events we put on and thats where everyones help is needed. Its your Chapter, Vote, Stand up and let us be heard. This past State meeting went well with State nominations. President nominees are State VP, Dan Fish and our Past Chapter President, Frankie Kennedy. Nominated for State VP, West Coast Chapter President Jim Gladstone and Duvall Chapter President Vic Sawyer. See their Nomination letters in this newsletter, it will help with your voting decision at the May 27th chapter meeting. Your Chapter Delegates ,Frankie and I, will bring that vote to the June 9th State meeting in Lake County. As of this writing, we have not received the Safety money we were told we had. I understand it was vetoed by the Governor but there will be a meeting in May and Darrin Scribes Brooks and Doc will be attending. It will be SOUTHWEST CHAPTER OF ABATE OF FLORIDA, INC. PG. 4 difficult without this money, but, we will still

stand and show our presence with flyers and smiles. More not so good news, the EPA approved 15% Ethanol at the pumps. If you value your ride, this is definitely worthy of a call or letter to your legislature. Vertical tag looks like it will go through and without a transponder. Waiting for Gov to sign. Thanks to Tracy Palin who filled in our speaker slot this past meeting. Tracy works with ARC, a nonprofit that currently houses over 500 animals. Thank you Eric Molafsky of Paradise Deli for hosting our Wednesday night bike night and your full page ad. The Chapter voted to bid to host the February State meeting. I will submit at June State meeting. If you read a newspaper and happen to see anything related to a bike accident, please forward to me or the State office. We are tracking media comments. Bike Nights at the Joint on Tuesday and Paradise Deli on Wednesday still going strong. Come on out and share some stories, vent, have some good food. Congratulations to Taylor Musburger, Carey Phillips and Hayden on their recent wedding plans. The happy couple will be wed on San Juan Island just off the coast of Seattle on June 24th. Good news, Bill Radcliff from Gator Alley won the Bike drawing, Congratulations Bill. Michigan makes it 31 States without a Helmut law, Congrats Michigan. Next 5 Star Committee meeting is May 19th @ Peace River Chapters Run-A-Muck, 10:00am.

Remember, We are the ONLY Motorcycle Rights Organization in this State. Be Proud youre a member. Ride Safe, Wayne

Are We Following the Road Captain?
Many riders are familiar with the term, Road Captain. The Road Captain will lay out the safest and most efficient proposed route for the riders to take. The Road Captain will sometimes inspect the bikes and riders prior to the ride; to be sure everything and everyone is in compliance with whatever the safety rules of the riding group you're with. The Road Captain will gather the riders in advance of the ride, to go over the route, rules/instructions, and signals. In addition, the Road Captain will be at the head of the formation and attempt to safely lead the group through what could be perils ahead. To some extent, a motorcycle Road Captain is extending his hand of protection. It is usually understood that if you deviate from the Road Captains instructions, you will now be on your own and you will be responsible for the consequences of your choices. Sometimes during the ride, the Road Captain may see one of us doing something that is unsafe. He may pull back beside us and give us instruction. Or, he may wait to give us instruction during a rest or fuel stop. We can heed the safe shepherding/guidance that the Road Captain has attempted to offer. If we do our own thing, judgment from the Road Captain and/or the group may follow. If we continue to ignore the instructions and attempt to continue to ride with the group, we could endanger the safety of the group. The innocent could suffer as a result of our actions. When it comes to living, we should consider God as our Road Captain. In the 22nd Chapter of Isaiah, there is a story about a city in revelry. The revelry continues, in spite of impending danger and death. In verse 12, God (the Road Captain) calls for the people of the city to weep and mourn, to shave their heads in sorrow for sin, and to show remorse. Instead, the people turned their backs upon God; they thought that they might as well live it up to the fullest, since life was not expected to last very long. They are described in the 13th verse, But instead, joy and gladness, slaying oxen and killing sheep, eating meat and drinking wine: Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die! You must ask yourself, Is this the thinking of those who have no hope because they are without God? And/or, have they turned their backs on God? Is it possible that many people in America are turning their backs on God, even though it is very clear that He wants all of us to rely on Him and follow the commandments He has given? During our lifetime, we are experiencing disasters in what seems like an unprecedented scale. Look at Hurricane Andrew in 1992, the 9-11 attack in 2001, the four hurricanes that hit Florida in 2004, and in 2005, Hurricane Katrina (and, the hurricane season for 2012 is about to begin). And, what about the tornadoes over the past two years? For all our lives we have heard the term refugees relating to people from other parts of the world. Now, for the first time we are hearing about hurricane refugees in America. We must ask ourselves, Is His hand of protection, which we have enjoyed for so many years, coming off? Are we in danger of judgment? The killing of unborn children continues in this country at a rate of over 1,000,000 per year. We have managed to remove God from our schools and most public institutions. We are falling away from the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and our Lord Jesus, to other religions. Marriage, which was instituted of God, has a divorce

rate in the United States of approximately 50% (this is one of the worlds highest). What about the attempts to legalize gay (homosexual) marriages? Gambling seems to be on the increase. There are many more casinos in more places, along with the rise in internet gambling and lotteries. Gambling shows on the television seem to be on the increase with all its seemingly glory, rather than showing the vice grip it has on many human lives. Hollywood has hit new lows with its movies visually depicting illicit sex and demonic themes, in more detail than ever before. It may appear to some, not only are many failing to follow the instructions that God, the Road Captain has laid out in the scriptures, but many are throwing some of these things we do in His face. If God is removed, has no place in our lives, if we have turned our backs on Him, and we have not asked forgiveness and repented, then we must be prepared to suffer judgment. We will be unprotected. As a country and as individuals, there is hope for us. There is Good News. God says in, Leviticus 26 3 "If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, 4 I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees of the field their fruit. 5 Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want and live in safety in your land. 6 I will grant peace in the land, and you will lie down and no one will make you afraid. I will remove savage beasts from the land, and the sword will not pass through your country. God further says, 2 Chronicles 7 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Will you pray? Dear God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and our Lord and Savior; I come to you and ask forgiveness of our sins, individually and as a nation. I ask that you would restore your hand of protection around us and once again give us peace and security. I ask that you restore those families that were directly affected with the tragic losses that have recently taken place. Lord, help me to better understand the spiritual reasons behind these events and to better understand and know you. Thank you, God for blessing this great land that I live in. I confess that I am a sinner and have been separated from You. I ask forgiveness of my sins. I repent and accept this gift of repentance and I wish to be free in you. I confess with my mouth that your son Jesus is my savior and died for me. I believe in my heart that You raised Him from the dead. I receive Jesus into my heart and ask Him to become the center of my life. Lord, I want you, as my Road Captain. I ask, in the Name of Jesus. Amen." If you wish to contact us, to talk about your decision for Him, please email or call. If you wish us to help with prayer for you, loved ones, friends or others, let us know. SOUTHWEST CHAPTER OF ABATE OF FLORIDA, INC. PG. 9

Hello, My name is Victor Sawyers. First I would like to thank the folks that chose to nominate and affirm me as Vice Presidential candidate. A few inside our organization probably dont know much about me. Here is a glimpse of where it all started. I am from the Southwestern United States. I have rode motorcycles since my early teen years. Moved to Jacksonville Florida in 1990.I turned domesticated and raised my family. While raising my family motorcycling was put on the shelf for the fear of leaving my family orphaned. Well the children grew to adults. I turned 39and received an instrument of passion as a gift. Yes it was a motorcycle. On my 40th birthday I received a gift from 2 very close friends. It was a yearly membership to ABATE of FLORIDA.I was thrilled. I was unaware of what the gift really was. After attending my first meeting it blew me away. I educated myself and was amazed what the organization stood for. It probably saved my life. With making new friends and enjoying the camaraderie of a shared cause ,I was hooked. It wasnt long after I actually looked forward to our monthly meetings. Over time I asked questions and learned. My second year with the local chapter I received my first appointment as Vice President. After 4 months in California with work related duties, I came home to find our chapter was about to lose our charter. With Board of Director changes in later months, I remained Vice President. More problems surfaced. IT was brought to my attention by a State Board Member( No names)Im disappointed that you didnt step up for the cause in the first place.I took that as a true challenge. I was elected to the President position by vote of the membership. Our chapter started a New Beginning. Faced with a dismal bank account ,very few advertisers, and no member participation. The new membership elected an awesome group of people for their Board of Directors. Since that time our chapter grew from less than 150 to over 400 within three years. The key was getting the membership to be active in the promotion of a cause we all believe in. Continued growth has been a blessing. That is the last 9 years of my involvement with ABATE of FLORIDA. Guess what?Im ready for my next challenge. The lesson I have learned ,if you listen to the people they have brilliant ideas. The challenge of success is up every single member. Im willing to share my ideas of success with every chapter throughout the state of Florida. Unity of the people with a common cause is a powerful weapon. I will do this job to the best of my abilities..and I do listen . My overall goal for everyone: To have the luxury of riding a motorcycle without gritting their teeth out of fear of dying. See yall in June. SOUTHWEST CHAPTER OF ABATE OF FLORIDA, INC. PG. 25

Greetings, Fellow ABATE members, Hopefully you are all well and in good health. My name is Frankie Kennedy, past longtime president of the Southwest Chapter, as many are aware I was again nominated for the state presidents position. This is the reason for this writing, It is my hope that after sending this communication to all the chapter presidents around the state, that they will share the information in it with their members. I am 54 years young, I have been self employed most of my adult life, I have been founder, owner, and operator of many successful businesses in my life and was fortunate enough to retire back in 2004, I went back to work last year as the lull in the economy cost me dearly, as it did to many around the country. The opportunity for me to bring my experience and expertise to our organization is timely; one of the first orders of business would certainly be membership. It is my thought that this states MRO is lacking desperately in membership, in my opinion as a grass roots organization the first line at gaining membership is to have qualified, informative, people in place to help promote our MRO. Some of the ideas over the years included groups of chapters getting together and doing very large events to help promote our cause, If planned properly these large state events will bring in membership in very large numbers, we just did an event here in southwest Florida in December 2011 it was a one day event and it brought out over twenty thousand people. We have also done the 5 Star Event for the past nine years and are currently planning the tenth year event this event includes the Gator Alley, Peace River, Estero River, Caloosahatchee ,and Southwest Chapters, and as of last year we took on a sixth chapter and included the West Coast chapter. We currently have a handful of group chapter events around the state these events will become a priority for me as your state president. Other concerns include our MSAP, again as many are aware the Southwest chapter has been a premier chapter in bringing our MSAP to the Lee county school system, I would like to make this happen around the entire state and am willing to travel around the state to make this happen.

Another opportunity that was offered to ABATE a few years ago was for our people to write the section of the Florida drivers handbook on motorcycles and motorcycling, this too is a wonderful chance to attach our name to motorcycle safety and awareness around the state. This too is something that in my opinion should be a priority of the new state board under my leadership. It is my plan to get as much good public relations as possible using these methods I sincerely believe that after we establish some of these programs our membership will grow exponentially Communication is imperative and I will lend myself to be available to all the chapters around the state as well as travel to your events and participate with those of you that are giving so much to our MRO. We have over thirty chapters around the state and it will be a priority of mine to join with you personally at both your events and chapter meetings. My understanding is that many are unaware of my part in a TV interview nearly two years ago that aired on the east coast at this time I would like to alleviate any concern of any ABATE member of any wrong doing on my part. I was interviewed and the entire interview consisted of my defending ABATE of Floridas MSAP program, However my interview was never aired simply because I didnt say what the interviewer wanted to hear, anyone that knows me personally will tell you that I eat sleep and breathe ABATE and would never do anything to diminish the importance of our states MRO. In closing I would like to add that I will bring my many years of corporate management and professionalism to our great organization I will strive to make ours the premier MRO in the country. It is my goal to make ABATE a household name in our state and to enlist the expertise of all of our states residents motorcyclists as well as non motorcyclists. Our mission is to save lives and bring awareness to those that are currently unaware of our cause. Any questions and or response can be sent to swchief2000@yahoo.com and will be answered upon receipt. At your service, ride safe, Frankie

Candidate for State Vice President 2012 ABATE of Florida

I would like to say how honored I am to have been nominated for the Vice President position for ABATE of Florida, Inc. I first and foremost extend my thanks and gratitude for this opportunity and for the confidence others have in me to do the job as State Vice President. Many of the delegates that attend the State meetings are familiar with who I am and how strongly I feel towards the rights of motorcyclists as well as the rights of every citizen in these United States. I want to give everyone more information about myself so you know who you are considering for the Vice President position in June, 2012. My name is Jim Gladstone and I am President of West Coast Chapter located in Sarasota/Manatee County area. I am 46 years young and married to Margie Gladstone, another active ABATE member. While West Coast Chapter President I have made our local legislators as well as the general public more aware of ABATE and strengthened our reputation and credibility within the counties we are involved in. We have made great strides in repairing our bonds with our local law enforcement community as well as with our local dealerships and other riding and non-riding organizations. We have been able to get our metric riders in the area more involved with our chapter as well. I am a US Army veteran, honorably discharged in 1987. I am registered voter and a current member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, PGR riders and the Florida Farm Bureau. I hold a US Coast Guards Captains license, CDL A and have held a TWIC security clearance. I have been riding motorcycles since my teens. I moved to Sarasota in 1992 from Ohio where I raised and shoed horses for a living as well as working nighttime security gigs in local clubs and venues. I originally moved down to Florida to work horses, but moved on to attend Motorcycle Mechanics School at MMI in Orlando. I was an over the road truck driver for 6 years which allowed me to see a lot of this great country of ours. I currently own and operate my own business building computer networks throughout Florida, which affords me the ability to make my own schedules for work. I am extremely active in my local community, not only for motorcyclists rights, but also for our homeless citizens, childrens causes and military veterans. I am currently ending my 3-year term on the Sara-

sota County Community Action Agency Board advisory committee. I have held other board positions in other organizations as well over the years. I am familiar with maneuvering around our government system and the way they like to do things here. I can be politically correct when needed, but a bulldog when necessary. I believe in our Bill of Rights and the rights we are afforded as US citizens, and battle constantly to help keep these rights for all of us. I believe in the freedoms our forefathers fought for as well as our troops, who still fight today, to defend and support these rights. I have a lot to offer the motorcycle community and firmly believe in the causes ABATE fights for. I have a lifetime of riding experience as well as the communication skills to get our message across. I know how to work within a team and know that an organization is not just one person, but also a group as a collective. I think outside the box and have great problem solving abilities. Im not afraid to speak up and question things when I think they are incorrect or wrong. I have proven this many times at various meetings. I am extremely passionate about ABATE and my role within it. I have told our members multiple times if you want change you have to be part of the process. Dont just rely on the next guy to do it for you. Step up and let your voices be heard. If you dont, you just settle for what the other guy wants. You have a unique opportunity this year to elect a new State Board of directors. You have a say in the process. And you have a great field of qualified candidates to choose from. I have spoken with the other candidates and can tell you Im glad we have people willing to sacrifice their time for the cause and believe in what we should be. We should always strive to be better and settle for nothing less. Let your voices be heard. As officers we safeguard the organization and work for the good of the whole. I feel I would be a great asset to ABATE of Florida and its members and hope that you will allow me the honor to serve as your Vice-President. Remember to vote and let your voices be heard. Thank you, Jim Gladstone President West Coast Chapter ABATE of Florida Inc (941)704-4336

LEGISLATIVE REPORT May 2012

Good Morning Freedom Fighters: ABATE of Florida, Inc. has been slapped in the face by the state of Florida. Gov. Rick Scott has vetoed our $250,000 motorcycle safety money. Not because weve done a bad job with this grant money. Not because we havent impacted the reduction of accidents and fatalities involving motorcyclists in the state of Florida. Not because we havent educated the non-riding public about being more aware of motorcyclists in the traffic mix, and not because our Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Program in the Florida school systems has failed, but because he wants other organizations to do what we are doing. Now, I ask you, does that make any sense? NO!!! Over the past twelve years, thousands of ABATE of Florida members, not to mention many other motorcycling organizations, clubs and independent motorcyclists, have dedicated themselves in reducing accidents and fatalities involving motorcyclists across the state of Florida, to spread the message, WATCH FOR MOTORCYCLES, CHECK TWICE, SAVE A LIFE. You see these bumper stickers every day. Even the state of Florida has jumped on this band wagon, and posted this message on the electronic signs on the Interstates and the Turnpike. What is this man thinking? Motorcycle accidents and fatalities are down by 25% across the state, the largest reduction in years. Crashes involving alcohol have been significantly reduced. These changes have not happened by chance. They reflect the ongoing efforts and commitment of thousands of motorcyclists across the state of Florida. If you have a program that is working, and working very well, why would you want to cut it out? It makes you wonder what Gov. Scotts priorities are. Obviously, they are not in the best interest of Florida motorcyclists. News from Doc: Late yesterday I received a call from Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles wanting to talk about safety and to let us know they sent out the final check for this year of $40,000. They informed me that the Governor VETOED next year's money. I informed them I had talked to the Governor's office and they told me we had received it. I then called the Governor's office and was told again we would get the 250K and explained to them what DHSMV had stated and she said she would call me back. She called me back and told me we were on a different list and that the Governor did indeed VETO our money. I had already sent out the email stating we would get the money on the word of the Governor's office. I waited until today to send this so I could get more clarification.

I was told this time the Governor vetoed the money because he wants more organizations to do what we do and DHSMV said they are having a meeting on safety next month that Darren will be at and wanted me to attend as they want to talk to the group about them being involved and carrying on our programs. I told them I would not be there and it was a slap in the face to Abate to attempt to take over programs that they have worked hard to maintain and support. It is my fault for taking the office of the Governor at their word and will state so in the President's letter I am writing. I am sorry for any embarrassment that I have caused the members of Abate of Florida, Inc. One side note someone I trust in the governor's office told me that the Channel Two video hurt as well. Doc NEW SENATE MAPS HEADED FOR PASSAGE The Legislature's second shot at drawing new districts for the state Senate is on the cusp of passing the House as early as Tuesday, setting up the next stage in the once-a-decade process of crafting Florida's political boundaries. Republican and Democratic leaders said Monday that they would likely go ahead and vote on the new Senate map on Tuesday, finishing up an extraordinary session called to address a Florida Supreme Court ruling nullifying the plan. This marks the first year justices reviewed the plans under the anti-gerrymandering Fair Districts amendments, approved by the voters in a November 2010 referendum. The House, which saw its map initially approved by the court, is expected to defer to the Senate and give the plan the go ahead, at which point the Supreme Court will again review the Senate proposal. NO GRAND JURY IN MARTIN CASE State Attorney Angela Corey said Monday she won't send the Trayvon Martin shooting case to a grand jury. A statement from Corey's office said the investigation into the Feb. 26 shooting will continue, but the grand jury that was set to meet Tuesday in Sanford won't get the case. The fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin in Sanford by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman has drawn international attention. Corey said no decision has been made on whether to file charges against Zimmerman. "This decision should not be considered a factor in the final determination of the case," the statement said. "The Grand Jury was previously scheduled by the former prosecutor." BILL TO WAIVE LICENSING FEES FOR VETS NOW LAW One of the measures signed into law late Friday by Gov. Rick Scott waives some license fees for military veterans. The bill (HB 887) allows the initial application fee and unlicensed activity fee to be waived for veterans re-

returning for service for the first two years after they're out of the military. It would save them a few hundred dollars, to more than a thousand, depending on the type of license, and applies more than 20 professional licenses, from those in real estate to hairdressers. *American Motorcyclist Association From the AMA: Support bill to require U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to seek independent scientific analysis on the effects of 15 percent ethanol Contact U.S. House Speaker John Boehner and your representative today! On April 19, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) sent a letter to U.S. House Speaker John Boehner urging the House to consider H.R. 3199 that would require the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to seek independent scientific analysis on the effects of E15 gasoline as soon as possible. This bill needs the support of the House so the American people will know exactly how the use of 15 percent ethanol blend (E15) gasoline will affect the operation of their vehicles. The House Committee on Science, Space and Technology reported H.R. 3199 favorably, as amended, with a vote of 19-7 on Feb. 7. The bill was introduced by U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.). "The EPA's decision to allow E15 into the marketplace will impact every American who owns a car, lawnmower or boat," Sensenbrenner said. Automakers insist that using E15 will void warranties, lower fuel efficiency and cause premature engine failure. In off-road engines, the effects can even be dangerous for users. "There are serious concerns that the EPA used only one Department of Energy test and rushed E15s introduction into the marketplace," Sensenbrenner said. "This test was limited in scope and ignored a plethora of evidence - albeit inconvenient evidence for the EPA -- that shows E15 gasoline has a negative effect on engines." The new E15 gasoline formulation may soon appear at a fueling station near you, and you need to be careful how you use this new fuel blend. That is because the EPA, in October 2010, approved E15 for use in model year 2007 and newer light duty vehicles (cars, light-duty trucks, and medium-duty passenger vehicles). In January 2011, it added model year 2001-2006 light duty vehicles to the approved list. Riders should pay attention to this list because no motorcycles or ATVs are currently listed. The AMA is concerned about E15 because it burns hotter than gasoline that contains a lesser amount of ethanol. In engines not designed to dissipate that extra heat, damage in the form of premature wear can result. Although this is a concern in all motorcycles, it's particularly problematic for air-cooled engines found in many bikes. Moreover, use of E15 may even void the manufacturer warranty. Since the approved list includes many light-duty vehicles in use today, refineries, distributors, and fueling stations may choose to offer primarily E15 gasoline because of this action by the EPA. This should concern all motorcy-

clists and off-highway enthusiasts since this may affect the availability of gasoline with less or no ethanol (E10 or E0). The AMA supports H.R. 3199 and urges its members and, all motorcycle and all-terrain vehicle riders, to contact Boehner and their representatives to voice their support for this bill. Please write Boehner and your representative today and urge them to support H.R. 3199. The AMA encourages riders to personalize their message by drawing on their own personal riding experiences. AUBUCHON FOR CONGRESS Experienced Leadership When We Need It Most As many of you may be aware by now, Rep. Gary Aubuchon, R-Cape Coral, is running for the U.S. House of Representatives District 14 seat currently held by Congressman Connie Mack, R-14. U.S. Rep. Connie Mack is stepping down to make a run for the U.S. Senate. He is challenging U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, D-Fl, for his seat. According to some of the polls, Mack and Nelson are tied. I will be working with Gary and his campaign staff as a volunteer. I see this as a tremendous opportunity to represent the motorcycling community in a major federal campaign. It will also help Gary and his staff, to get to know our community a lot better, and if elected to office, he will become a more effective advocate for motorcyclists in Washington, D.C. Because of his skilled and experienced leadership in the Florida House, I think he is the best choice to represent the people of District 14, in the U.S. Congress. Gary will be our guest speaker at our May chapter meeting. I urge you to plan on attending our May chapter meeting to hear him speak.
