Hillbilly Deluxe Junior-Senior High School

Demographics: Grades: 7-12 Enrollment: Approximately 600 students Administration: 1 Superintendent, 1 Principal, and 1 Head Teacher Staff: 42 Full-time teachers Race: 98% White, 2% Other Economic Status: 46% Free or Reduced Lunches Graduation Rate: 95% Administrative Filter: Policy: Behavioral: Emergent Any teacher who wants to purchase some type of technology must submit a request and each request is considered by the district on an individual basis. Resource/Infrastructure: Islands There are policies for use of a couple individual resources, but most are informal. Planning: Behavioral: Emergent Teachers decide what technology they want to purchase and submit a request; projects have individual plans for the basics and are informally completed. Resource/Infrastructure: Emergent The district does not have a set technology plan. Budget: Behavioral: Islands At the conclusion of every school year, teachers submit budget requests for supplies and technology for the next year. However, there is not a long term budget for technology. Resource/Infrastructure: Emergent Technology budget requests come directly out of the combined budget. Administrative Information: Behavioral: Intelligent Attendance and grading systems are all electronically sent and filed. Resource/Infrastructure: Intelligent All staff members have access to necessary administrative systems such as attendance and grading systems. Curricular Filter: Electronic Information: Behavioral: Islands In certain classes, information resources are used often for online research, but in others the research is limited. Resource/Infrastructure: Islands There are computer labs and mobile carts available, but the resources are only enough to support a fraction of the school at any given time. No self-assessment technology is used in our school. Resource/Infrastructure: Emergent Almost all assessment used in our school is traditional paper based testing. Curriculum Integration: Behavioral: Islands Labs rely on technology, but other classes depend on the computer labs and carts Resource/Infrastructure: Islands Specialized equipment is available for select classes and labs. Teacher Use: Behavioral: Integrated Most teachers use either SmartBoards or projectors for lectures as well as daily administration duties requiring computers. Resource/Infrastructure: Integrated The majority of teachers have the needed technology available to them, with others having some extra technologies that are a bonus. Student Use: Behavioral: Emergent The classes that do use technology use it randomly Resource/Infrastructure: Islands Certain classes, such as lab classes, have regular access, others do not have that access. Support Filter: Stakeholder Involvement: Behavioral: Emergent The only ones engaged in the process are the teacher requesting the technology and the administrator approving the request. Resource/Infrastructure: Emergent The only groups represented in the planning process are the administration and the requesting teacher. Administrative Support: Behavioral: Islands The administration will check in on the technology use processes, but they don't have much input Resource/Infrastructure: Emergent There is no formal planning process for the administration to devote their time. Training: Behavioral: Islands If the school purchases new technology for the entire staff to use, they train the staff during an in-service. However, if it is technology to be used by only a couple teachers then they are usually on their own. Resource/Infrastructure: Emergent Formal training is limited to district wide purchases at in-service day. Technical & Infrastructure Support: Behavioral: Islands Some teachers use the support offered by the school, but a lot of teachers try to figure out issues on their own. Resource/Infrastructure: Islands

The school has two full time staff members for technical support and technology installation. Connectivity Filter: Local Area Networking: Behavioral: Islands Staff use technology daily mainly for data and networking, students use it sporadically for research, but it is unsophisticated. Resource/Infrastructure: Integrated There is high-speed access everywhere in the school, but it is mainly limited to data. District Area Networking (WAN): Behavioral: Islands We use district networking daily, but it is basically traditional usage. Resource/Infrastructure: Integrated District wide high speed services are available for data services. Internet Access: Behavioral: Integrated Use of the internet is a daily occurrence for the teachers and a sporadic occurrence for students. The internet is integrated into curriculum for research as well as demonstration purposes. Resource/Infrastructure: Intelligent Direct access to high speed internet is available to all areas in the school. Communication Systems: Behavioral: Islands Email is used daily by administration and staff but is not used by students for education at all. Resource/Infrastructure: Integrated Email is available to all staff, but there are no school provided email addresses for students. Innovation Filter: New Technologies: Behavioral: Islands Staff members generally accept new technologies, but most technologies provided by the school do not allow for much experimentation. Resource/Infrastructure: Islands New technologies are accepted, but some teachers resist the implementation of some of the programs Comprehensive Technologies: Behavioral: Islands Almost every classroom now has a SmartBoard. Resource/Infrastructure: Islands Most staff members have limited technology resources, numbering one or two types per teacher. My overall rating or the Hillbilly Deluxe Junior Senior High School would fall somewhere between Islands and Integrated. The school has great infrastructure, but the usage of the available technology is very basic and surface level. If the technology we have available were used to its full potential we would be somewhere between Integrated and Intelligent. With some more organized planning, our technology use can be turned around completely.
