Malmed Global warming emerged as one of the most contentious environmental issues of the late 20th century. Unlike other industrialized nations, the United States resisted international efforts to curb manmade pollutants that contribute to global warming. In his article The Earth is Warming? Adjust the Thermostat?, John Tierney argues that people should not rely on politicians when it comes to global warming because world leaders cannot put their words into action. Tierney successfully presented his argument through his satirical language, logos and ethos.

Starting his article with satirical language, Tierney makes fun of how politicians empty promises can help keep the planet cool. He states that continuously talking about the weather will help the planet stay cool in the future because ...leaders like to promise one another that they will keep the globe cool by drastically reducing carbon emissions. Then, when their countries emissions keep rising anyway, they convene to make new promises and swear that they really, really mean it this time. He argues that even though politicians empty promises are not very effective, it can help cool the globe by keeping the people updated in this issue which is also i. He then satirizes the term geoengineering by saying that ....this approach used to be dismissed as science fiction fantasies: cooling the planet with sun-blocking particles or shades; tinkering with clouds to make them more reflective; removing vast quantities of carbon from the atmosphere. Even though the term is used by countless leaders throughout the world, Tierney ridicules it, making it sound uneffective and meaningless. Tierneys use of satirical language in the beginning of his article rather than just stating his opinion is essential because it shows the readers where

politicians stand when it comes to global warming and how this would affect us and the world we live in. According to ABC News report President Obama Says Global Warming is Putting Our Safety in Jeopardy, Obama illustrates how not taking action about global warming will lead into a bigger disaster in the future. He states that if the international community does not act swiftly to deal with climate change that, we risk consigning future generations to an irreversible catastrophe. John Tierney on the other hand, counter-argues this statement by saying that The National Academy of Sciences and Britains Royal Society are preparing reports on climate engineering, and the Obama administration has promised to consider it. But so far there has been virtually no government support for research and development.. Using a logical appeal, Tierney successfully made Obamas statement ironic due to the fact that our government has not fully supported the action of keeping the Earth cool and yet blabbers false words to our citizens. Tierney ends his article with ethical appeal in order to make use of what an audience values and believes to be good. He writes that If rich European countries with strong green constituencies cannot live up to their own promises to cut carbon, how much hope is there of permanently enforcing tough restrictions in the United States, much less in poor countries like India and China? If even a few nations demur or cheat, the whole system can break down. Using this appeal, Tierney was able to connect to a belief the audience already holds regardless of whether they have ever thought about Tierneys position in the same way before. Even though politicians keep on talking and talking about global warming, the problem wont be solved at all. The key to solve the matter is to get the whole world to take action. According to an editorial Ignoring A Growing Peril by Bob Harper, ...acknowledging that the earth is already sizzling, the report made it clear that human activity -- the burning of fossil fuels that release heat-trapping

gases into the atmosphere -- was the primary culprit. Using another ethical appeal, Tierney argues that if the politicians dont get the whole world by their side and the climate becomes seriously warm, there could be enormous political pressure to do something quickly. Tierneys use of rhetoric is convincing because he was able to show that world leaders precautions to protect the world from the difficulties global warming creates by spouting words of empty promises and false hopes. Although the demur or objection to a uniform solution to global warming may be challenging to achieves, leaders should immediately take action and not leave the people hanging in the air on what theyre supposed to do. Without singularity or unity on this serious issues, global warming will continue to encumber or hinder the world and the billions of lives on Earth.
