Two alligator hunters from
the swamps of Louisiana will
visit Aiken to scope out the
Aiken Standard South Caro-
lina Outdoor Expo in June.
Father-and-son duo Troy
and Jacob Landry of His-
torys show Swamp People
will be at the South Carolina
Outdoor Expo, sponsored by
Carolina Outdoors and Golf
Cars, on June 23 at the USC
Aiken Convocation Center.
The expo will run from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Landrys star in
Swamp People, a show
where History follows
swampers through a 30-day
alligator hunting season.
Now in its third season, new
episodes of Swamp People
air Thursdays at 9 p.m. on
History.
The Landrys will meet and
greet fans at the expo from
11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be
available for a photo opportu-
nity and autographs, so bring
a camera and an item for
them to sign.
A family-friendly event
geared toward the hunters
and fishermen of Aiken, the
Outdoor Expo is the perfect
opportunity for businesses
targeting the outdoor enthu-
siast as they will be able to
showcase the latest and great-
est in product lines, said event
coordinator Debra Price.
Fishing and hunting pro-
fessionals, as well as industry
experts, will be on hand to
share their wealth of knowl-
edge, Price said. With the
Aiken Standard already being
the trusted source for local
news and information, it
seems only natural for us to
be at the center of providing
the community with such a
venue of this caliber.
Tickets for the expo are $8
and go on sale April 2 at the
USCA Convocation Center
box office.
Attendees can visit booths
covering the spectrum of
outdoor activities, including
hunting, fishing and archery
demonstrations for adults and
children alike.
We encourage families to
bring their children and intro-
duce them to positive role
models in the outdoor arena,
as well as experiencing hands-
on attractions geared spe-
cifically to their age group,
Price said.
The S.C. Department of
Natural Resources is bringing
its TOMO Heritage Trailer,
Price said. TOMO, which
stands for Take One Make
One, is designed to teach safe
hunting practices to students
who have no previous outdoor
hunting experience, according
to SCDNR.
The TOMO Heritage
Trailer will give kids the
opportunity to experience
shooting sports and the out-
doors through the use of
video simulators and hands-
on air rifle ranges, according
to SCDNR.
Our goal is to make this
a true outdoor experience for
children and adults, Price
said.
Hooties Outdoors Inc. will
have combination fishing/
archery equipment on display
and an archery ranch for kids,
Price said, and the U.S. Army
National Guard is bringing a
Humvee and video game ops
station for kids.
Residents will be able take
a spin on a Harley without
going anywhere with Harley
Davidson of Augustas Jump
Start Simulator, Price added,
and several outdoor educa-
tional organizations will be in
attendance to educate about
area animals.
The Aiken Standard will
run several contests and pro-
motions leading up to the
expo, including a cookbook
and photo contests. Look for
announcements in the Aiken
Standard and on the Aiken
Standards Facebook page.
Residents may purchase
tickets at Carolina Outdoors
and Golf Cars, 2258 Whiskey
Road.

Summer Fun Guide!
Summer vacation often
starts with high expectations.
Children are excited about
the prospect of fun days out-
doors playing with friends,
while parents anxiously await
relaxing months without the
responsibilities of school and
extracurricular clubs. But
once summer vacation arrives
and the first few days have
passed, parents often find that
the litany of cheers and gig-
gles transform into a chorus
of Im bored.
Many parents pore over
ideas that will keep their
children busy throughout
the summer. Many activities
that come to mind tend to be
expensive, so if cutting costs
is a priority, parents might
need to think outside the box
to come up with entertaining
ideas that wont break the
bank.
Camp
Summer camp is a popular
way for kids to spend their
summers, but many camps
are expensive.The American
Camp Association has found
that overnight camps can cost
anywhere from $325 to $780
a week. Day camp fees may
be $100 to $275 per week.
Parents who send their chil-
dren to camp for an entire
season might pay anywhere
from $3,000 to $9,000 for the
seven- to nine-week program.
Parents looking for an alter-
native to costly camps should
consider local programs
that offer summer activi-
ties. Libraries, schools and
childcare centers may have
programs that run the length
of summer and are consider-
ably less expensive than more
formal camps. A YMCA or
even a swim club may also
put together activities. Parents
whose children attend after-
school sporting classes, such
as karate or soccer, may find
that the organizations offer a
camp or summer program.
Day Trips
If a parent is off for the
summer, then day trips may
be a possibility. Schedule a
few day trips to different loca-
tions that the kids are excited
to see. Newspapers routinely
print Go See It or Just Go
listings that highlight local
events. The family can gather
around the table and decide
which outings would be inter-
esting and then mark them on
the calendar. Some parents
purchase season passes to
amusement parks and take the
kids several times over the
summer. In either case, bring
snacks and lunch from home
when possible to keep costs
in check.
Kid Swap
Chances are many of your
neighbors are also facing the
same difficulties as they try
to find ways for kids to spend
their summer afternoons. Par-
ents can get together and set
up a schedule for entertaining
the kids. For example, one
parent is responsible for the
whole lot one day, while the
next day another parent takes
a turn. This gives parents the
opportunity to take a break
from parental responsibilities
and enjoy some quiet time.
And for the children, time
spent in a pool, watching
movies, playing video games,
or riding bikes is often more
enjoyable with friends in tow.
Fun Projects
Children often want to feel
useful, and may enjoy the
responsibility of some easy
tasks in and around the house
-- so long as the tasks are fun.
Washing the car with a hose
and a bucket of sudsy water
is a fun way to cool off during
the hot summer days and get
a chore done. While parents
should not expect a perfect
job, they can rest assured that
the kids will have at least an
hour of fun in the sun and
water.
Set aside a patch of the
yard that children can turn
into their own personal gar-
dens. Encourage digging in
this area and provide seeds or
seedling plants as well as kid-
sized gardening tools. Each
day the kids can check on the
progress of their gardens.
Some home-improvement
and craft stores sponsor free
learning activities for chil-
dren. They can be held in the
morning or afternoon and
will teach interesting skills
that can be put to use again at
home.
Summer vacations are soon
to arrive, and parents can be
armed with a list of enjoyable
-- yet inexpensive -- ways to
keep kids busy.
How to keep kids entertained all summer long
When school lets out for the
summer, many parents are left
searching for ways to keep children
entertained in the ensuing months.
Keep Your Kids Brains
Active Over Summer
This summer, millions
of kids will experience the
dreaded summer slide,
described as the educational
ground lost when young
minds sit idle over summer.
Many teachers spend the
first four to six weeks at the
start of each school year re-
teaching material students
have forgotten over summer,
says Ron Fairchild, execu-
tive director of the Center
for Summer Learning at The
Johns Hopkins University.
To help your children avoid
this intellectual slump and
give them an academic leg-up
come fall, keep them thinking
over the summer by making
learning fun. Here are a few
ideas to get you started:
Educational
Outings
Be sure your summer
is filled with outings that
will jog your kids noggins.
Museums, historical sights
and science centers are great
combinations of learning
and fun. Turn a hike through
the woods into an opportu-
nity to learn about trees and
wildlife. If youre going on
vacation, encourage your kids
to research the history and
culture of your destination
in advance. Remember, even
a trip to the ballpark can be
educational. For a painless
math lesson, talk stats about
your favorite baseball team.
Smart Games
All those outings are going
to mean a lot of time in
the car. Rather than repeat-
edly answer the classic road
trip mantra -- are we there
yet? take advantage of
the time together and use it
to play games that challenge
smarts. Brain Quest (www.
BrainQuest.com) for example,
an educational tool popular
amongst teachers, parents and
children, helps bridge the gap
in learning from the end of
one school year to the start of
the next. Consider using their
card decks and workbooks,
full of curriculum-based con-
tent, as they are easy to pack
into a hand bag or beach bag.
You can easily turn those long
boring road trips into fun and
educational bonding experi-
ences!
I advise all my students to
use learning tools like Brain
Quest on summer vacation to
avoid brain wipeout and get a
jump on next years material,
says Kim Tredick, a 5th grade
teacher in Santa Clarita, CA,
and the 2006 Milken Award
Winner. As one of my stu-
dents says -- its a first class
ticket to straight As!
Pen and Paper
Theres no better time than
summer to curl up outside or
on an extended road trip with
a great book. You can instill
a love of reading in your
children by arming them with
both a library card and a sum-
mer reading list. Be sure to
visit your library frequently to
refresh their reading material
and help them get inspired.
Most libraries host readings
and book clubs, and even
offer free classes. Take advan-
tage of such programs.
If its been awhile since
your children used pen and
paper, have them keep sum-
mer journals about their expe-
riences. For those inclined
toward fiction, encourage
them to use the time off to
write short stories or a novel.
A long vacation is no
excuse to give a brain time
off. This summer, turn down
time at the pool and on the
road into a learning experi-
ence.

Summer Fun Guide!
National Learn to Swim
Day is Saturday, May 19, and
parents across the country
are gearing up to get their
children out of the house
and into the pool. Its impor-
tant to teach your kids to
swim early on, as progres-
sive learning will help them
develop skills that will last a
lifetime.
According to the Red
Cross, drowning is the sec-
ond leading cause of uninten-
tional injury-related death for
children ages 1 to 14 years
old. A child should never be
left unattended in or around
the water -- even in your
home pool, where statistics
show toddlers are most sus-
ceptible.
Learning to swim is not
only a necessary safety mea-
sure; its also a fun physical
activity that families can
enjoy together.
SwimWays, the creator of
the Swim Steps program that
helps kids learn to swim, is
sharing four simple steps to
help you introduce your chil-
dren to the water, and set the
stage for a lifetime of swim-
ming:
Get your child comfort-
able in the water at an early
age. You can introduce babies
to the water using a baby
float. The SwimWays Baby
Spring Float for example, has
a mesh play space for toys
and splashing. Teach them
that the water is a fun place
to play.
Explore the water with
your child using swim-train-
ing aids specially designed
to help parents teach kids to
swim. The Swim Steps line
includes the Swim Sweater
and Swim Vests that will
comfortably help your little
one balance and paddle --
two important pre-swimming
skills.
Once your child is ready
to learn to swim, use a gradu-
ated flotation device, such as
the Power Swimr, to allow
him or her to develop swim-
ming abilities at his or her
own pace. Be sure to keep an
active eye and supervise at
all times!
While you may feel your
little one has the skills to
swim without help by now,
remember it takes a lot of
courage to traverse the water
alone.
Its often beneficial for a
child to ease into swimming
with a bit of extra support
before taking their first solo
strokes. Kids can use kick-
boards as they begin to mas-
ter their swimming skills and
gain the confidence needed
to swim successfully.
You can find information
and ways your family can
participate in National Learn
to Swim Day at www.Teach-
MeToSwim.com. Before you
know it, your child will be a
fish in the water!
Todays kids are busier than
ever before. Commitments in
the classroom coupled with
a full slate of extracurricular
activities have ensured that
many of todays school-aged
children dont have a minute
to spare.
While its important for kids
to embrace extracurricular
activities, parents know its not
always easy helping kids find
the right activity that allows
them to grow outside the
classroom while still focusing
on their responsibilities inside
it. In addition, kids interests
tend to change at the drop
of a hat, so something they
want to do today might bore
them come tomorrow. To help
kids choose and manage their
extracurricular activities, con-
sider the following tips.
Emphasize that school-
work must come first. Kids
get excited about extracur-
ricular activities, especially
ones involving sports where
they get to spend time playing
with their friends. But parents
should emphasize that school
still comes first and that, if
schoolwork starts to suffer,
participation in extracurricular
activities will be put on hold
until kids get their studies
back on track.
Go over coursework at the
start of the school year. Exam-
ine a childs course load before
choosing an extracurricular
activity. Its important to do
this each year, as coursework
gets more difficult as children
get older. Just because a child
could handle a couple of after-
school activities a week when
he or she was in fifth grade
does not mean such a schedule
will be as manageable when
the same child reaches high
school. Go over coursework
and requirements as early as
possible, preferably before the
school year starts, so you and
your child can get a grip on
what can and cant be handled
with regards to extracurricular
activities.
Get a grasp of the commit-
ment required of a given activ-
ity. Extracurricular activities
require various levels of com-
mitment. Varsity sport partici-
pation, for example, typically
requires daily commitment
and often requires kids to par-
ticipate on weekends or even
the sports off-season, which
may include summer vacation.
However, volunteering with
a local charity likely wont
require such a large commit-
ment and such charities often
allow volunteers to choose
their own schedules. Parents
and their children should con-
sider the level of commitment
an extracurricular requires and
choose the activity theyre
most comfortable with.
Dont overlook the social
benefits of extracurricular
activities. When helping kids
choose an extracurricular
activity, its important to leave
the ultimate decision in their
hands. After all, kids wont
get much of the experience if
theyre reluctant to participate.
However, parents should not
overlook the social benefits
of extracurricular activities.
Consider those benefits when
helping kids choose activities,
especially if theyre likely
to choose solitary activities
like learning a musical instru-
ment. Its good to encourage
such interests, but also try to
encourage a balance between
solitary activities and ones that
encourage socialization with
peers, such as a sports team,
debate club or volunteering
with other students at a local
charity.
Dont forget the fun fac-
tor. Extracurricular activities
are not just supposed to instill
character, theyre also sup-
posed to be fun. If kids arent
having fun or showing any
interest in a given extracur-
ricular activity, then help them
find another one. Kids need
time to have fun away from
school just like adults need
time for fun away from the
office. Weigh how enjoyable a
given activity figures to be for
your youngster before signing
them up.
How to help kids choose
an extracurricular activity
Certain extracurricular activities, including sports, require
larger commitments than others.
