He had taught them courage and dignity, and now he was accepting an unfair deal obliging them to look on helplessly as one of them received degrading, humiliating treatment. When the prophet asked them to sacrifice the camels that had been consecrated for the pilgrimage, none of the Companions could bring themselves to comply, for the wounds and the bitterness too deep. The Prophet repeated his order three times, but nobody responded. This was the first time he faced with disobedience in such a collective and determined manner. The Prophet (pbuh), startled and saddened, retired into his tent,.. At this crucial moment he went to his wife Umm Salamah, who was in the tent, and explained the unprecedented situation, he faced first time in his life, to her. She listened the situation com-

passionately and then suggested to him that he should act wisely and silently. She advised him to go out without saying anything and sacrifice his own camel. Prophet (pbuh) accepted her suggestion and acted accordingly. When his Companions saw that their leader was doing sacrifice of his camel, they rose one after another and followed him. This is how he valued the suggestions of his Companions in taking important decisions and resolving problems. 12. Patience and perseverance: Patience and perseverance was a key factor of his success. He was always very patient in all sorts hardship and suffering on way to achieving his vision. In the events of the death of his mother, uncle, wife and his children to expulsion from his home and life threatening persecution in Taif, in all situation he set unprecedented examples of patience and perseverance. He was never discouraged by adverse circumstances nor did he permit any personal desire to get a hold over him. In all situations he was mindful of his mission and ultimate vision. His entire life is full of test and turbulences. I would like to quote only following two examples his patience from his life, which, I think, are of outstanding nature. The Day of Taif In the tenth year of the mission, his uncle Abu-Talib and his wife Khadeejah both died. With their death the abuse of the Quraish increased manifold. Of those few people who were allowed to hear the Quran many became Muslims. However, due to continuous torture given by the Quraish, he decided to preach the word of God to the people of AlTaif. So he traveled to Al-Taif to convey the message

of God to people. When he reached there, the elders incited the youth against him. The fanatic youth started throwing stones upon the Prophet of Islam, so much so that the Prophet was severely wounded; he was bleeding from top to tow. His shoes were filled with blood, and it became hard for him even to walk. At that very critical moment, instead of cursing him, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed to God the Almighty by saying, O, my Lord, unto you I bewail my weakness, inability, and disregard of mankind towards me. O Most Merciful of the merciful, you are the Lord of the weak and my Lord. Unto whom shall you deliver me? Unto one who is distant and shall glower at me, or unto an enemy whom You have given authority over me? If You are not angry against me then I do not care what befalls me, as Your gifts of well-being are more commodious for me. I seek refuge in the light of Your face that has overcome all darkness, and through which all matters of this life and the hereafter have been established in justice, that Your retribution should fall upon me, or your disdain should befall me.Unto you is all appeasement until you are appeased, and no one has power or ability except in you. At that time the Angel Gabriel appeared and addressed him saying: Allah has heard what your people said to you, and how they have replied to you. Allah has sent the angel of the Mountains to you so that you may order him to do whatever you wish to these people. The Angel of the Mountains then appeared and said, O Muhammad! Order what you wish. If you like, I shall cause mountains surrounding Al-Taif, to fall upon them, and crush them into pieces. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Mercy to humanity replied, No, for I hope that there shall be among their children those who will worship Allah alone, and will worship none besides Him. And he prayed, O my Lord guide these people because they know not. Shib Abi Talib : The tenth year of his leadership and Prophethood was a year of intense persecution and suffering. The Quraish and the other tribes had continued their boycott of the Bani Hashim, his tribe and the Muslims for about three years and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the people of his family and Companions lay besieged in Shib Abi Talib. The Quraish had blocked up this vicinity from every side so that no supplies of any kind could reach the besieged people. This boycott continued uninterrupted for about three years and had broken the back of the Muslims and the Bani Hashim; so much so that at times they were even forced to eat grass and the leaves of trees. At last, when the siege was lifted, Abu Talib, uncle of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who had been shielding him for ten long years, died, and hardly a month later his blessed wife, who had been a source of peace and consolation for him ever since the beginning of his challenging leadership, also passed away. Because of these tragic incidents, which closely followed each other, he used to refer to this year as the Year of Sorrow and Grief. But all this period of suffering was spent with patience and with great tolerance. He never compromised with his mission and never broke away from his

vision. This level of unimaginable pa-tience and perseverance, in one hand kept his Companions focused on their mission on the other hand made his enemies frustrated. This outstanding quality helped to gain enormous strengths to achieve victory after victory over materially unequal enemies. 13. JUSTICE Justice in all circumstances was one of the fundamental attributes of the leadership qualities of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) which helped him to win the hearts and minds of people irrespective of race, religion, gender and colour. He was unique in enforcing uniform standards of justice and fairness. On one occasion a woman belonging to a highly respectable and well-connected Makhzoom family was found guilty of theft. For the prestige of the family, this caused great worry to his Companions, as if the normal penalty were to be imposed upon the young woman, a leading family would be humiliated and disgraced. Many were anxious to plead with the Prophet on behalf of the offender but were afraid to do so. Eventually some prominent people including Usama Bin Zaid, a very beloved companion of the Prophet (pbuh) undertook that mission to save her from punishment. When he put this matter before the Prophet (pbuh), he refused to disregard the crime and expressed displeasure by saying: Many a community ruined itself in the past as they only punished the poor and ignored the offences of the exalted. By Allah, if Muhammads own daughter Fatima would have committed theft, her hand would have been severed . The Jews of Medina were so impressed by his impartiality and sense of justice that they used to bring their cases to him, and he decided them according to Jewish law. He was very strict in implementing justice, even if it was against him. Once, while he was distributing the spoils of war, people flocked around him and one man almost fell upon him. He pushed the men with a stick causing a slight scratch. He was so sorry about this that he asked the man that he could have his retribution, but the man said O Messenger of Allah, I forgive you. Conclusion: Prophet (peace be upon him) came as a mercy to mankind. He came to illuminate the darkness. He was the light that leads to light, and in learning from his life, believers return to the Source of Life and find His light, His warmth, and His love. Prophet (peace be upon him) may have left but his role model, of leading to enlightening the darkness, transforming the hatred to love, is with us. He taught us to spread his message, follow his model of love and peace. In todays turmoil world only his model of leadership can bring peace and love back to the world. As a successful leader Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) attracted us as followers. I am sure all of us are proud to be his follower. But if we want his great mission of keeping peace through rule of God to be succeeded, his followers must take lead in taking his mission forward. Therefore, I urge the young followers of our beloved prophet (peace be upon him) to take lead and find own sense of purpose in the shared challenge of the contemporary world and spreading the mission and vision of enlightening the world.
