USC meets their maker in 8-6 loss to Gazette

Exchange students now allowed to vote

Kelly Hobson GazEttE Staff Students on a full-year exchange were granted another Western perk away from home. Previously, these students were ineligible to vote in the University Students Council elections, but following a meeting last week, the USC amended bylaw 2, allowing full-year exchange students to vote in the future. The amendment that was approved by council establishes criteria for voter eligibility, which the old bylaw didnt, Will Bortolin, USC governance officer, said. He also explained the issue was about defining overall voter eligibility, not just addressing the concerns expressed by exchange students. Paul Craig, a third-year Western student on exchange in Singapore, felt his democratic rights were compromised by the restriction prior to the change. He quickly voiced his discontent to the USC and other university officials. We are Western students. We are enrolled at Western. We pay Westerns tuition, Craig argued in an open letter to the USC elections committee on February 24. Initially, the concerns expressed by exchange students like Craig were met with resistance. The official responses I initially got back were apologetic but passive, Craig explained. I figured the whole thing would be forgotten. The issue wasnt forgotten, however, but instead directly addressed

USC introduces new 10-year capital plan

budget accounts for ucc maintenance and renovations
richard raycraft GazEttE Staff The University Students Council is shaking up its financial operations with the introduction of a new capital plan. The plan will set a 10-year outline for how much the USC will spend renovating their operations and equipment. The capital plan marks the first time the USC has had an official outline regarding the maintenance of existing capital and the acquisition of new capital. Previously, the USC would receive requests for capital from different university operations during the budget process. These requests would be reviewed and evaluated at random. They would then be selected based on the USCs estimations of what could be afforded within the budget. This process resulted in some operations being neglected. The plan is so important because it gives the USC equal opportunity to replace different areas of the organization on a needs basis, Andrew Forgione, USC president, said. This will ensure that some areas wont be ignored as they may have been in the past. Forgione points out that inconveniences such as ripped furniture and stained whiteboards had been consistently placed as a low priorthe capital plan with specific targets for the allocation of capital for each organization, ranked by priority. Though the plan is laid out over four years, Forgione stressed that it is not immune to change. Its a guideline, but its also very flexible, he said. Priorities may change over time, and the [future] executive council can make adjustments as they see fit. Some of the initiatives included in the plan will be maintenance and replacement of University Community Centre furniture, renovations to UCC conference rooms, and more consistent replacement of audio-visual equipment. Events Net, the online hub for events at Western, is also scheduled to receive a complete upgrade. The plans overarching strategy is to inject small amounts of capital in the operations on a yearly basis, with relatively large outlays scattered throughout. Jennifer Valadao, vice-president finance for the USC, believed the capital plans benefits will be felt by students directly. For students, it allows the USC to remain on our toes to minimize complaints with something we couldve been able to plan for, she said. Its a good strategic tool and it adds to the flexibility of the USC as an organization.

ity. The capital plan aims to ensure that these issues do not float under the radar. The plan should also prevent costs for operations and equipment from snowballing due to years of neglect. Focus will now shift to addressing needs annually and in a more organized manner. Over time, our costs will be lower as items are replaced more consistently, Forgione said. Therefore, we can spread the cost out over a few years, which puts less of a burden on students and on [the USC]. When the USC announced the plan, all department managers were asked to compile a list of needs and wants over the next 10 years. When the USC received this information, it was organized into

more charges laid in Fleming riot investigation

London Police have charged an additional seven people in relation to the St. Patricks Day riot on Fleming Drive. Among the charges laid include a number of more serious offences, including assaulting a peace officer, which can result in

a penalty of 6 months in jail or a $5,000 fine. According to Dennis Rivest, media relations officer for the London Police Service, two of the individuals were allegedly part of the mob, which tipped and later destroyed a CTV News vehicle attempting to cover the riot. Some of the charges involving

westerns SGPS wins award for excellence

Westerns School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies has won a $2,500 award for excellence in innovation and graduate education. The award will be presented at the annual conference of the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools, held April 19 to 21 in Halifax. The awards are being given for two programs provided to graduate students applying for external scholarships. The Consult the Experts Series, which began in 2009, offers graduate students support in writing research proposals by hosting a series of counselling sessions with expert volunteers. The Scholarship Library, which was launched a few days ago, aims to provide students with an online database of information for all fields of study. Before these programs began, there had not been many centralized mentoring programs and centralized databases for applying for external scholarships, according to Wesley Moir, the web coordinator of the SGPS. What is innovative about our programs are that no matter what your field is, you can go to one place and get expert advice for any scholarships in person, and then you can follow up with that by going online and having all that information available to you at your fingertips within one website, Moir said. When asked about future planning about their programs, he said the Scholarship Library has been a big step for the SGPS. Their plan had been to expand their library, but he said they are still figuring how to use the award funds to fuel their effort. anthony poon

CGC mulls clubs policy complaint

bylaw 2 amended for voters abroad

aaron Zaltzman news editor After two meetings in the last 10 days without a resolution, the Clubs Governance Committee of the University Students Council will meet once again to deliberate a complaint filed against the Western branch of Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights. The complaint, which pertains to a protest at an Israeli culture celebration organized by the group Israel on Campus, was filed in February. According to Nicole DAlessandro, vice-president student events for the USC, the issue has been prolonged both because of its intricacy and the difficulty in holding CGC meetings that are composed of students-at-large. Trying to get everybody together has been the major delay, DAlessandro said. As far as the discussion got at the last meeting, we provided a background and made sure people understood the details of the complaint. DAlessandro explained the issues facing the committee surround the accountability of clubs for their members individual actions. The question is, Does this make it a club event? DAlessandro explained. CGC looks at clubs as a whole rather than one specific individual, but there are cases where the actions of one person can ultimately impact the club as a whole. DAlessandro also said the current clubs policy is not equipped to address this question. The issue raised is whether the club is responsible or the individuals are responsible. Theres nothing clearly defined in clubs policy to really deal with this. The SPHR executive team ar-

gued the protest was not a club action. This was not an SPHR event, nor was it in anyway affiliated with SPHR as a club, the team said in an email. Each person was there on their own free will, expressing their rights as free individuals. The team also said the club should not be punished for the actions of individuals. We have never heard of executive members of any other club needing to defend their actions as individuals. Sara Gurza, president of IOC, said her club was willing to wait for the decision. We are proud to be one of hundreds of student clubs at Western. Therefore we respect the process it takes. We are happy the CGC and the USC are taking this issue very seriously. She explained IOC was taking steps to deal with protests of their events in the future. We are mindful of the possibilities of more protests and attempts at silencing our voice, so we have focused more on coordinating our events with campus police. DAlessandro said the next CGC meeting will take place Thursday morning.

by the USC last week. In a meeting last Wednesday, a motion was passed to amend bylaw 2, which handles elections procedures. The amendment includes a new definition of voter eligibility and deems students eligible to vote in the USC elections if they pay Western tuition for the current academic yeareffectively including all Western students who are studying abroad. Craig was originally informed by the USC that with no Western courses and no student fees being paid, he was similar to a high school student who had accepted an offer of admission to the universityhe would be affected by the vote, but would have no say. I wanted an objective criteria, something that was based on some kind of a principle, as opposed to specifically enumerating a list of people without any underlying reasoning for including those people, Bortolin said. The fact that council approved [the] amendment implies they felt it was important that exchange students have the right to vote. Despite her disappointment with this years election, Jasmine Irwin, a third-year Western student studying in France, said she holds

hope for how the amendment will impact future exchange students. It will give them another anchor and connection to Western at a time when it seems that connection is very tenuous, Irwin said. It will acknowledge the legitimacy of exchange students not only as Western students, but as ambassadors for Western.

Are we getting too wordy?
The Oxford English Dictionary has undergone its quarterly update, and words like LARPing and scratchiti have been invited to join our language. Buzzwords and modern slang constantly find their way into our vocabulary, but how do we determine what to include in our dictionary? Language constantly evolves, and weve always relied on the dictionary to keep one standard version of English. This can be helpful, as the dynamic nature of communication means the way we use words can quickly evolve to the point where different dialects may become completely incompatible without standard definitions to anchor the language. But in the world of the Internet, words are often invented overnight. As weve seen with websites like Urban Dictionary, theres a need to keep informal definitions of slang and newly invented words. But words like these can die just as easily as they can be inventedshould we be solidifying words like tweet in our dictionary? On the other hand, the dictionary is meant to be a tool to understand the language and can be especially useful to those beginning to learn the English language. If the dictionary does not keep up to date with recent words, is that detrimental to those using it as a valuable reference tool? Perhaps a certain criteria should be implemented before words are inducted. For example, there could be a specified amount of time a word must be seen as being relevant, and part of the English lexicon before it can be introduced into the dictionary. This may curb some buzzwords from getting quickly penned into the OED. It is important to keep in mind that our language is constantly morphing, and a word that used to carry one meaning is now used in a completely different way. The dictionary acts as a means to standardize our language, and considering our language is constantly shifting, it is important to keep the pages of the dictionary open. However, caution should be exerted before a word is etched into history, and perhaps the word should hold more meaning than a passing Internet meme. the Gazette editorial Board

Bikes lanes arent meant for walking

No ifs, ands or Hurlbuts
ryan Hurlbut illustrations editor Bouts of terrible weather notwithstanding, the snow and cold have finally dissipated and allowed the active members of Western to ride their bicycles to campus. And by ride their bicycles to campus, I mean endlessly weave through crowds of slow, vulnerable people who insist on walking on the bike paths. One would think the giant, white stencils of bicycles painted on the ground would be enough toat the very leastget people to be aware of their surroundings, but this is not the case. In fact, people seem to view these bike paths as sidewalks for slow-moving groups of pedestrians. Not only do pedestrians feel the need to saunter along these paths, blindly unaware of their surroundings, but the added width of the second lane allows them to do so in large groups that completely cut off any possible passing lanes. Not everyone has the luxury of living right on the edges of campus, and there is nothing more frustrating than riding uphill from downtown London, only to be confronted with the cliff that is University College hill. After hopelessly shifting down to first gear and putting in full effort, everything is for naught, as the lane is clogged up by a group of people oblivious to the presence of a biker behind them. Imagine the scenario from my point of view. I try to ring my bell to notify them of my presence. Except I dont have a bell, or the minimal funds it takes to buy one. There is no way pass them. The curb looms on the left of the path, and a concrete barrier separates a congested lane of cars on the right. A sad, dismounting biker stands in the middle. The bitter reality that these hordes of people represent is the fact that every bike path on campus has a sidewalk immediately adjacent to it. Even when ignoring the people who walk down the bike path, the people who cross the bike path cause just as much trouble. The very people who worry about getting hit by a car when jaywalking will blindly step into a bike path without a moment of hesitation. Whipping down UC hill towards a green lightan exhilarating experiencebecomes terrible when a person using their headphones to shelter themselves from the sounds of the outside world steps directly into the path of your speeding bike. Excitement quickly turns into fear as the biker is forced to weave around this new obstacle. For some reason, people refuse to show respect to a large hunk of metal potentially speeding towards them at over 40 kilometres per hour. One would think that people would not want to risk getting into a crash, based solely on the fact that an object is powered by humans, rather than by electricity. As someone who has been hit by a bike before, trust meit hurts. A lot. So, for those of you who have not gotten the message yet, stop walking in the bike lanes. Stop it. You wouldnt walk in the middle of the road, so why are you doing this? Stop it.

Politicians trade punches for charity

For two parliamentarians, delivering a knockout punch became a reality over the weekend. Liberal MP Justin Trudeau and Conservative Senator Patrick Brazeau, who have a rocky relationship, decided to settle their differences in the ringfor charity, of course. Although Ill admit I didnt watch the boxing matchit was on Sun Televisionit was reported underdog Trudeau took out Brazeau, who has a black belt in karate, in the third round with a technical knockoutnot bad for a prime ministers son. The entire event was gimmicky, and a tad ridiculous if you ask me, but on the bright side, the event did help raise $230,000 for cancer research.

Sandler sets new record

Adam Sandler is officially the best at being the worst. Not surprisingly, Sandlers movie Jack and Jill swept the Razzie Awards a spoof of the Academy Awards that awards movies for being the worst rather than bestwinning in all 10 categories. Some of the honours included worst movie, and Sandlerwho crossdressed in the movietook home the prize for both worst actor and actress. Its quite the honour seeing as how in the 32-year history, no movie has been so bad that it won all the awards. Congratulations, Adam Sandler. I mean, at least youre getting recognized for your work, even if its recognized for being horrendous. Kaitlyn McGrath

Holmes review leaves reader unsatisfied

Re: One game you definitely dont want to lose (March 27, 2012) To the Editor: Id like to address the inconsistent accusations made by Holmes against The Hunger Games. On the one hand, the movie failed to say anything significant about its themes because it is itself a solicitation of violence, and on the other, that it was a mind-numbing PG-13 Battle Royale. THG is permeated with violence, from the subtle, ethereal violence of tacit oppression, to the brutally tangible violence of children killing children. That is crucially different from glorifying it, which is what Holmes alleges it does.

The violence of THG is not meant to be glorified, and Ross was right not to indulge in it. By not dwelling on the violencethanks to the shaky-cam Holmes is quick to malignRoss successfully avoids the charge that his movies message was ironically insincere. As for the tired Battle Royale comparison, there are actually few substantive similarities. Battle Royale turns on the magnification and perversion of high school dynamicssocial conflict becomes a matter of life or death. The important conflict in THG is the one between tribute and statethe other tributes are pawns in a battle between Katniss and President Snow. The circumstantial similarity of children forced to kill one another is entirely superficial and probably coincidental. Holmes claims are misguided and inconsistent. If the violence made the

Directed by: Jonathon Libesman Starring: Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes It would be an easier task to navigate Hephaestuss labyrinth than to determine why the 2010 remake of Clash of the Titans needs a sequel. The Clash of the Titans remake was a titanic waste of time that should have never clawed its way out of the UnderworldWrath of the Titans is even worse. Like so many other blockbuster films released, Wrath of the Titans is in 3-D only as a way to make more money. The 3-D exists only when the filmmakers decide to throw CGI objects at the camera, or during the pre-movie announcement to put on that pair of goofy glasses. Whichever Hollywood executive decided to make every other film that comes out in 3-D needs to be thrown into the River Styx. Wrath of the Titans starts 10 years after the defeat of the Kraken in the first movie. Perseus wife Io, who was resurrected by Zeus

(Liam Neeson) at the end of the first movie, is deadattesting to how important she was in the first film. Hades (Ralph Fiennes) and Ares (Edgar Ramirez) have aligned and plan to drain Zeus power to release Kronos from his prison in Tartarus. After his son is threatened by a chimera released because of Kronos growing power, Perseus (Sam Worthington) goes on a typical fetch quest to retrieve a spear that can defeat Kronos, and as a result rescue Zeus from Tartarus. While it may sound like a rather standard fantasy quest, screenwriters Dan Mazeau and David Leslie Johnson wrote the plot as though they were writing a video game the plot only exists to escort us to the next boss fight. Characters switch allegiances arbitrarily and do incredibly stupid things. If the Spear of Triam could kill Kronos, why did Hades, Zeus and Poseidon choose to only imprison him? If Kronos is going to kill all the gods, why would Hades and Ares want to release him? More importantly, why did acting greats Neeson, Bill Nighy and Fiennes even decide to be in this movie?

Sam Worthington proves once again that he is not even qualified to play a piece of cardboard. Rosamund Pike now plays Queen Andromeda, although nobody would notice the character was recast if it wasnt mentioned here. Neeson and Fiennes would be giving great performancesif they were given anything in the way of good writing. Ultimately, the most interesting performance in this film was from the principal antagonist, Kronos, who doesnt talk or have any rational motive, and is a powerful symbol of what the money obsessed Hollywood system does to the art of cinema. There are interesting ideas brought up through the gods losing their powers as man chooses to stop worshipping them. In any other movie, that idea would be explored and make for a compelling film. Director Josh Liebesman predictably does nothing with that theme. Ultimately, the best thing that one can hope from Wrath of the Titans is that it doesnt make enough money to blaspheme against the gods of film with another sequel.

Some thoughts on campus coffee

Zalt of the Earth

aaron Zaltzman news editor Students, if youre anything like me, you get tired during long days. Perhaps you dont sleep well, or stay up late doing homework or, if youre really like me, secretly fight crime while dressed as a badger. Whatever the reason, you rely on coffee to keep you awake, whether its one or twoor fivecups a day. But which campus coffee is the right one for you? Honestly, all coffee tastes the same to me, so as somebody who is in no way qualified to write a proper review of coffee, I have taken it upon myself to guide you through the four options on Westerns campus.

Tim Hortons Cost: $1.52 for a medium Nose: Smoky, rich flavour that carries notes of horrendously underpaid Guatemalan farmers. Palette: Was this made at 9:26 a.m. or p.m.? Who youll see in line: Literally everybody. Why you drink it: Because the slight emotional high youll get from drinking a good ol Canadian beverage will totally help you ignore the fact that its made from the lowest quality beans in South America. Why you shouldnt: The 25 minutes youll spend in line will give you time to realize that the Roll Up The Rim To Win odds are six to one, meaning the probability is one in seven, which are roughly the same odds of you getting to class on time at this point.

The Spoke Caf Cost: $1.91 for a medium Nose: A dark roast with hints of the same beer your dad drank at the Spoke in 1983. Palette: Well, what do you expect from students? Who youll see in line: USC keeners who are trying to promote student business and people at the back of the Tim Hortons line. Why you drink it: Because youre a loyal Western student who doesnt care about fancy labels, and the coffee is free-trade. Also, you mistakenly thought the coffee combo came with one of the awesome bagels instead of a muffin. Why you shouldnt: Even with a second bagel toaster, it remains to be seen if the line-up at peak times will shorten.

Williams or Van Houtte (I call them The Independents) Cost: $1.60 for a medium Nose: Burning, when you accidentally inhale the copious amounts of steam. Palette: Oh sweet god, its burning my tongue. Who youll see in line: Students who are too hipster-y to drink Starbucks, but too good for Tim Hortons. Why you drink it: Because you have to get to class and theres a three-hour line at Tim Hortons. Why you shouldnt: In your haste youll probably take too big of a sip, meaning that coffee will be the last you thing you taste for a long time while your tongue heals.

Starbucks Cost: $2.15 for a medium Nose: Stuck way up in the air. Palette: Look at you with your fancy words to go with that expensive coffee. Who youll see in line: People who dont know what OSAP stands for. Why you drink it: Because you think that something that expensive must have a prize at the bottom. Also, you hate coffee but love mocha frappuccinos with whipped cream. Why you shouldnt: Once youve spent all your money on mocha frappuccinos, youll have nothing left over to pay for your diabetes treatment.

and their official debut album certainly leaves a strong first impression. Recorded over four days by Grammy Award winner Mark Lawson, the album takes the genre back to its roots with strong but simple compositions and a solid mixture of mellow and uplifting tempos. Driven by haunting vocals and emotionally charged lyrics, the opening track Dont Give Up on Me sets the tone beautifully. With everything from steady piano ballads like After the Meditation, to guitar-driven rock tracks like Just Listen (Dont Talk), the band effectively merges the mellow sound of bluegrass with a high-powered classic rock sound. The final track We Were Famous and We Kicked Walnut Leaves leaves a lasting impression with only an acoustic guitar and harmonious vocals. Through emotionally inspired lyrics and rich musical arrangements, Harvest Breed draws on a time when music had the power to inspire thought and evoke emotion. Perfect for either a cold, rainy night or warm, sunny day, Harvest Breeds first album provides a fresh take on an old, familiar sound. sean truckle

Harvest Breed Everything Changes Landlocked Records Montreal-based band Harvest Breed takes folk-rock to a new level by combining insightful songwriting with a mixture of rich and mellow musical compositions in their debut album, Everything Changes. Inspired by the warm and fuzzy sound of the 1970s, the vocallydriven album successfully evokes the best of classic artists like The Band and Neil Young. The six-piece band recently changed their name from Jake and the Leprechauns for a fresh start,

Sports
gazette sports It wasnt for the Yates Cup, or the Queens Cup, or even the Jack Frost Cup, but on the rain-soaked outdoor rink, a ragtag bunch of journalists from the Gazette editorial board were sculpted into a goal-scoring team that took care of business against the University Students Council. Led by president Andrew Forgione, the USCs late push towards victory was stymied by strong defensive play from the Gazette backline as they pulled out an 8-6 victory. I couldnt be more proud of my team right now, Jesse Tahirali, editor-in-chief, said. They went out there and gave it 100 per cent. No, you know what? Im going to say that they gave it more than that. I think theyre the first sports team to ever give it 110 per cent. Starring for the Gazette was former sports editor and Gazette staff Daniel DaSilva, who came out of retirement to resume his role as starting goaltender. The game was preceded by an emotionally charged rendition of Oh, Canada followed by the much anticipated puck drop. From then on, it was all Gazette all day. With Marissa Joffre, vice-president campus issues for the USC, between the pipes, the Gazette was able to pounce early and often. Joffres stand up style of play made life easy for the Gazette with her rebound control. The first shift of the game exemplified this style, as sports editor Ryan Stern was able to bury his own rebound off of a pass from fellow sports editor Jason Sinukoff. The Gazette added two more tallies to close out the first with a goal from illustrations editor Ryan Hurlbut and another from Stern. The USC was able to keep the game within reach as they potted one of their own to make the score 3-1 at the close of the first frame. We started out strong and didnt get too ahead of ourselves, Aaron Zaltzman, news editor, said. We were playing a good team game and looked to continue. After two periods, the Gazette held their slight advantage over the USC by a score of 6-4. As the tension heightened heading into the third, the USC looked to spark their squad, making a change between the pipes by replacing Joffre with communications officer Eliot Hong. After a raucous round of cheering, the USC was able to set the tone for the third period with a quick goal right off the draw. Social science councillor Zach Sicard

rain drops Keep fallinG on My Head. Sports editor Ryan Stern carries the puck up through the puddles in the Gazettes 8-6 victory over the USC. Stern had a hat trick and two assists while editor-in-chief Jesse Tahirali scored the game winning goal in the one-game exhibition.

won the draw clean and deposited the puck in the top left corner to cut the deficit in half. The Gazette was able to fend off the late surge from the USC with another three goals from Stern, Tahirali and Cam Parkes. Even with the heart-breaking defeat, Forgione

was proud of his teams efforts. We fought a tough battle out there, he said. Blood, sweat and tears. We used every motivational movie line we could find and gave it our all, but it just wasnt enough. My hat goes off to the Gazette, but be warnednext year we will

be giving nothing, and taking from you, everything. But Forgione doesnt scare the Gazette. The USC may rule the student body, but we rule the USC, Tahirali said.

High standards
last year was a very successful one for the mustangs, as both the men and women won silver medals at the ontario university athletics championship. With this success and star athletes such as steven takahashi and ilya abelev gaining one more year of experience, the mustangs were expected to either win silver or gold at the oua championships and medal at the canadian interuniversity sport championships.

oUa championships
the wrestling teams best moment once again came in the form of the oua championships. the mustangs cleaned up at this years ouas, with the women winning the bronze and the men winning gold for the first time since 1994. brianne barry took home the outstanding Female award, while abelev won the Keegan trophy the mens outstanding wrestler award. the tournament saw eight mustangs qualify for the cis championships.

Hard to find
the mustangs season was one of great highs this year. dominant performances were aplenty, making it difficult to find a worst moment of the year. one hiccup was at novembers toronto wrestling invitational. the mustangs finished seventh out of 25 teams from ontario and Quebec, conceding the title to the guelph gryphons. Josh proctor led the mustang team with a first place finish in the 68 kg division.

Steven takahashi
it was extremely difficult to select one mustang to be mVp, but after much deliberation, we have selected Steven takahashi. takahashi had an amazing year, culminating with his gold medal performance at the national open wrestling championships. He became the first mustangs athlete since 1987 to win an individual senior mens title. takahashi is headed to the upcoming Junior worlds and will once again suit up for the mustangs next year.

Looking bright
the mustangs will be bringing in some promising recruits, while also retaining most of their stars. Head coach Ray takahashi will be returning to mould the incoming recruits into champions, while steven takahashi, abelev and barry will continue to dominate their divisions next year. expect the mustangs to once again compete for oua gold and give concordia and brock a run for their money in the cis championships.

Unstoppable
With rookies shining and veterans continuing to dominate, it was no easy task to stop the mustangs this year. with impressive finishes in all major tournaments, the mustangs showed their mettle and met all expectations. the mustangs were able to be extremely consistent, medalling in most events this season. this a goes to each athlete and their ability to come together as a solid unit.
