IMPLEMENTATION OF RFID IN SUPPLY CHAIN Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a technique of remotely storing and retrieving data that

uses data like RFID tags. These tags are small objects like an adhesive sticker that could be attached to the product. RFID tags consist of antennas that makes responding to radio frequency queries possible from an RFID transceiver. RFID is one of the anticipated technologies in coming years. Manufacturers, retailers and logistics providers are making unprecedented use of RFID technology to keep a track maintain security and manage items from the time they are in the state of raw materials and throughout the entire product life cycle. Since the technology can make internal processes more efficient and improve supply chain responsiveness, the manufacturers can benefit a lot from this technology. For example Earlier RFID adopters in consumer goods industry reduced supply chain costs between 3 % - 5 % and grew revenue between 2% - 7% because of the added visibility of RFID provided, according to the study by research. In business RFID is commonly used to identify pallets, containers, vehicles, tools and other assets, monitor inventory and route materials through production processes. This technique give immediate and tangible effects to the supply chain and the organizations which fail to assess their technology capabilities and limitations unknowingly keep on increasing their inventory visibility while streamlining their operations.

Radio waves are used to transfer the data between the RFID tag and the read/ write device interrogator, which are tuned to the same frequency. The interrogator sends out the signal which is received by all tags tuned to the frequencies that are present in the RF field. An important thing to note is that RFID is not an optical technology and does not require line of site between tag and reader that gives RFID many advantages over Bar Code and other technologies. SECURITY It is extremely difficult to counterfeit radio frequency identification chips. A hacker would need specialized knowledge of wireless engineering.

ASSET MANAGEMENT RFID tags can be permanently attached to capital equipment and fixed assets including pallets, cylinders, lifts, trucks. Fixed position readers placed at strategic points within the facility can automatically track the movement and location of tagged assets. INVENTORY CONTROL By using the highly accurate, real time and unattended monitoring capability of RFID to track the raw materials, work in process and finished goods, inventory manufacturers can improve visibility and confidence into their inventory to enable overall inventory levels, labour costs and safety stocks to be reduced.
