Co-chair of the Humanitarian Policy and Practice Committee Dominic MacSorley Recognized for Outstanding Contribution to International Disaster Responses
New York, NY - Concern Worldwide U.S. Operations Director and Co-chair of the Humanitarian Policy and Practice Committee, Dominic MacSorley OBE, was recognized last night by the Northern Ireland All Party Group on International Development (APGID) for his outstanding contribution to international humanitarianism over the past 30 years. The award ceremony took place on Thursday, March 29 in the Stormont Parliament Buildings in Belfast and honored the incredible contributions that Northern Ireland citizens and natives have made to the developing world. Mr. MacSorley received the award for Outstanding Vocational Commitment to International Development at the ceremony from Jim Wells, Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and Vice-Chair of the APGID. Dominics award is a fitting tribute to a career of service to the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world, said Tom Arnold, CEO of Concern Worldwide. He is undoubtedly a worthy recipient. His immense knowledge and experience of humanitarian aid and disasters is coupled with a relentless drive. Dominic also has a blend of skills and attributes which he has repeatedly used to bring about positive change in the field of international development. Through his careful diplomacy and negotiation skills and by simply listening to the needs of affected individuals, Dominic has made real impact in the most distressing and traumatic circumstances. This is a proud day, not only for Dominic personally, and his family, but for the entire Concern organization worldwide. Born in Belfast, Mr. MacSorley joined Concern in 1982 and has since responded to nearly every humanitarian disaster in the past 30 years, including Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, Rwanda, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Darfur, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Haiti. In 2009, he was invested with the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne for services to international humanitarian aid. Mr. MacSorley has served as Operations Director for Concern U.S. in New York since 2002 and represents Concern and InterAction, the representative body for U.S. nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), at the United Nations as co-chair of the Humanitarian Policy and Practice Committee (HPPC). This was the second year of the awards, which were hosted by the All Party Group on International Development, in association with Northern Ireland Co-operation Overseas (NI-CO) and the Coalition of Aid and Development Agencies (CADA).
