ANDREW MURRAY
Roaming the Rhne
By miCHael CerviN

ANDREW MURRAY VINEYARDS Tasting fees are $10 for eight wines, or $15 if you include the take home logo glass. 2 for 1 Tasting with ad, see page 34 Tasting room: 2901 Grand avenue, los olivos open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Winery: 5095 Zaca station road, los olivos open saturday and sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (805) 693-9644 | www.andrewmurrayvinyards.com

Andrew Murray fell in love with the classic Rhne varieties, specifically Syrah and Viognier, in the late 1980s as he traveled through Frances Rhne Valley. At the time he was enrolled at UC Berkeley studying paleontology, but sampling the wines in France there was a shift in his thinking. Capitalizing on this newfound enthusiasm for wine, he decided to do an internship in Australia at a winery. When Andrew returned to the U.S., he earned himself a bachelors degree in viticulture and enology from UC Davis, and then founded his eponymous Santa Ynez winery and vineyard. Hes still a champion of Rhne wines though there have been ups and downs overall within the industry. I think back on all of the fads and buzzwords that I have witnessed in my short 21 years in the wine tradeover manipulation of wines, minimal handling, non-filtered, un-fined, natural, no sulfite, organic, Merlot, high alcohol, no alcohol, de-alcoholizing, he says. I have witnessed my precious varieties, Syrah and Viognier, rise from obscurity to become a casualty of their own success. And its true that these varieties are not the darlings of the wine press, however they are the apple of Andrews eye. As they were falling from favor over the last couple of years, I did not retreat from my love

Quality Craft Beers from Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co.

This family-owned brewery started by Jim and Jaime Dietenhofer of Los Olivos, has been life-long dream in the making. Harnessing their Bavarian heritage the Dietenhofers wanted to create a craft brewery in the Santa Ynez Valley that focused on creating the highest quality beer and help add to a growing hop culture in the Central Coast. Utilizing the skill sets from award-winning head brewer A.J. Stoll and his brew team, Figueroa Mountain Brewing has been able to create a line-up of seven quality craft beers (soon to be more). The brew team has been able to earn multiple medals including three golds in a very short period of time (open since 2010). In addition to selling beer in draft and bottles on the open market, Figueroa Mountain Brewery has a tap room that puts the patrons a few feet away from the brewing action. Complete with a state-of-theart stainless brewing system, customers can enjoy the pint of beer that was made in the same room and epitomizes freshness. An experience that includes live music on Fridays, and a complete food and wine list. Beer lovers may also enjoy the Fig Mtn Beer truck complete with taps on the side ready to pour. The truck can be seen at a large list of events throughout the Central Coast. Stay tuned to www.figmtnbrew.com for more information, or follow them on Facebook: Figueroa Mountain Brewing for the latest news and updates.

affair with these wines, rather I crafted more of them and even purchased and drank more of them. I doubled down in their defense, staying true to my early pioneering vision to become a leader in all things Rhone, he says unapologetically. And that kind of dedication is increasingly rare in todays wine scene. Much of the Syrah grapes are harvested from stellar vineyards like Three Creek Vineyard, and McGinley Vineyard, both in the newly created Happy Canyon AVA of Santa Barbara County. Grapes are typically picked in the middle of the night nowadays, Andrew mentions. This keeps the grapes cold, locking in their flavors and staving off the possibility of fermentation starting too early. In our case, this meant that crews were ready to roll at 3 a.m. And you have to be dedicated to your wines to harvest in the wee hours of the morning in the dark and cold. But thats what Andrew does. When you stop in at the tasting room its all modern, sleek and clean with white furniture and stainless steel countertops on the tasting bar. There is a preponderance of red wines to sample and lots of convivial conversation. There are new wine releases available in the tasting room right now including the 2009 Syrah Tous les Jours which was named by Food and Wine Magazine as the best American Syrah for under $20. There is also the 2009 Esperance, red blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvdre. I chose a bigger Syrah to blend in with the Grenache and Mourvdre, Andrew says, giving this wine a sense of being more profound, as he puts it. Also tasting well is the 2010 Syrah Watch Hill Vineyard 2009 Syrah Terra Bella Vineyard with fruit sourced from Paso Robles. Releasing shortly will be a white blend of Roussanne and Grenache Blanc, known as RGB and a dry ros composed of Grenache, Mourvdre and Syrah. The winery, at 5095 Zaca Station Road, Los Olivos, is now open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and offers seated wine tastings on the terrace overlooking the beautiful vineyards.

FIRESTONE VINEYARD
History Meets the Future

FIRESTONE VINEYARD open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 5000 Zaca station road, los olivos Tasting fee is $10 for seven wines. (805) 688-3940 | www.firestonewine.com. in Paso robles, their second tasting room is located at 2300 airport rd. right off Hwy. 46, (805) 591-8050

Firestone Vineyard was one of the first commercial estate vineyards planted in Santa Barbara and true to that progressive thinking, they continue to look forward with new wines, new markets and a commitment to making the best wines in Santa Barbara County. The Firestone name is familiar to most people; they were the family that created Firestone tires. The name Foley may be a little less familiar. Bill Foley serves as chairman of the board of directors for Fidelity National Financial, a Fortune 500 company. These two names however came together when Foley Family Wines purchased the Firestone winery. Foley has made continuous improvements to the historic brand; updating the tasting room, adding a full concert line-up and bringing in a well-known Napa Valley winemaker. Foley already has some impressive wines in their line-up including Kuleto Estate in Napa, Sebastiani in Sonoma, and Lincourt here in Santa Barbara, among others. Winemaker Paul Warson came on board at Firestone after 14 years making wine in the Napa Valley and has put his own stamp on Firestones light aromatic white wines and their traditional Bordeaux reds. Warson oversees over 500 acres of grapevines which translates to about 150,000 cases of wine each

year, making them a major player in Santa Barbara County. Firestone is also one of the few wineries in the area who offer complimentary public tours, which run daily at 11:15 a.m., 1:15 and 3:15 p.m. After the 25 minute tour you can picnic outside on the plush lawns and see for yourself the vineyards which have been planted on a series of mesas that have gravelly sub-soils, perfect for keeping the vines healthy and well-drained. They are ideally oriented to capture the sun and breezes for perfect exposure to maximize the grape flavors. They offer large private group tours for 10 or more people, the perfect way for you and your friends to have some alone time at the winery, though you need to make reservations for this one. If you are a novice wine lover or a confident connoisseur you will find wines that are compatible with your personal tastes. The spacious tasting room is replete with soft wood tones and tiled floors, reminiscent of a gracious ranch house, and is located on one of the best-known wine county roads in the county, Zaca Station Road. Inside the tasting room you can find gift items and sample multiple wines including, Chardonnay - one of their best known wines, Gewrztraminer, Riesling, Syrah, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon among others. Their bottle prices range from $14 to $60, with a vast majority being under $25. They also launched a value line called Discovery Series; Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon which are everyday drinkers priced at around $10; proof that you dont need to break the bank to break open a good bottle of wine. And an interesting note about Pauls wines is that he makes his wine to stand alone without food. These are wines, he says, that make you want to have another glass. Given the large property it makes perfect sense that they have the Firestone Concert Series, which are normally held the first Friday of every month throughout the summer, however they have added a few other Fridays as well because of how successful the past two summers have been for these events. After all, its wine country, with clear warm summer nights and the ideal backdrop to relax and have fun. The concerts are from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and are free to attend with all the current releases of Firestone wine being available for purchase through out the event. An outdoor concert requires food and Big Toms BBQ is a local vendor who does various types of BBQ such as his famous tri-tip sandwiches as well as pulled pork sandwiches, burritos, tacos and more. The concerts are held outside in the Firestone courtyard with tables and chairs set up to accommodate everyone. There is also a grass area in the front of the tasting room were guests can set up blankets and picnics for the event. From that position you can not see the band but are able to hear the music just fine. Each date has a different band performing and the music is cover bands playing everything from country to blue grass, jazz and some old school rock. Some of the bands scheduled include: April 20th - Jimi Nelson Band, May 25th Brant Vogul Band. June 1st its the Just Dave Band, and July 6th it will be Do No Harm. There are other dates already scheduled into October so go to the Firestone website for a complete listing and make your plans.

AVANT
Tapas and Wine
By CarolyN TUrNer

AVANT TAPAS AND WINE monday, Thursday, sunday 11am-8pm; Friday and saturday 11am-10pm 35 industrial Way, Buellton (805) 686-4742 | www.avantwines.com | email: info@avantwines.com Facebook: avant Tapas and Wine | Twitter: @avantwines

A Neoclassic Modern Industrial Experience in Wine Tasting. With a description like that, its easy to understand why Avant Tapas and Wine in Buellton has piqued the curiosity of even the newest of oenophiles (aka wine lovers). Certainly, Ive never heard of any other place in the Santa Ynez Valley described in that way; and thats simply because theres nowhere else quite like Avant Tapas and Wine. In the summer of 2008 there was a lot of buzz about Terravant Wine Company, the new custom crush winemaking facility that opened in the industrial area of Buellton off Highway 246. This new business would offer winemakers a state of the art facility to create and store their wines. Then in the fall of 2009, Terravant created even more excitement when they announced the opening of Avant Tapas and Wine, a beautiful restaurant with a large window that overlooks part of the winery. Visitors will often have the chance to see winemakers in action while tasting the very wines that were created only a few feet away. Visitors also have the opportunity to take a tour of the Terravant facility, which highlights aspects of the entire winemaking process from grape to bottle. Tours are offered throughout the day, although larger groups are required to call ahead to make an appointment. Avant offers a unique wine tasting and dining experience by allowing visitors to experience wines made on the Central Coast at the Terravant Wine Company, alongside of foods grown on the Central Coast, said Joe Padilla, manager of Avant Tapas and Wine. More than 40 winemakers create their wines at Terravant Wine Company, many of which are available for tasting at the Wine Wall in Avant. Believe me, this feature is as amazing as it sounds: an entire wall of the restaurant dedicated to a unique dispensing system that allows guests to select whether they want to try a sip, a whole glass or something in between. Many of the wineries featured on the Wine Wall do not have their own tasting rooms, making Avant the only tasting room opportunity for these

wines. Keeping with their Local Centric philosophy, about 10% of the Wine Wall promotes other unique and interesting wines made on the Central Coast. Since Avant offers such a unique selection of wines, it was imperative that the restaurants menu be equally as impressive and diverse. Enter the culinary queen, chef and local Santa Barbaran Brooke Stockwell. Stockwells menu changes with the season and is made with incredibly fresh ingredients gathered from local farmers markets and other producers within a 200-mile radius of the restaurant. I highly recommend starting with an order of Yuppy Crack (you wont regret it!) before diving into a mouth-watering wood-fired pizza, crisp salad or artistically prepared tapas. So if you had to choose one word to describe this haven of wine and food, what would it be? Why Avantastic, of course. As the website notes: Bring a few dozen winemakers and their wines together in one place and most call it a wine festival. We just call it another day at Avant. Our expansive collection of winesyields an Avantastic degree of wine tasting youll find nowhere else. Padilla adds to that: Avant is the one place where a visitor can see wine being made, meet one of over 40 different winemakers, and enjoy their wine paired with world class cuisine produced from local ingredients all under one roof. Whether youre a local or merely passing through on vacation, joining Avants Collectors Wine Club allows you to take a bit of Avant home with you, including wines created specifically for Avant by ten Central Coast winemakers. Or grab a bottle of one of the hundreds of local wines sold at the Avant Wine Shop. Its certainly never a dull moment at Avant, with winemakers stopping in to pour their wines, sharing their stories and rubbing elbows with the crowd. There are also quite a few scheduled tasting events with winemakers, including a Preview Tasting on Friday, April 20th, the evening before the Vintners Festival, one of the largest wine tastings on the Central Coast. Also, every Friday and Saturday visitors will be treated to live music from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Make sure to check www.avantwines.com and click on the Events tab for information about upcoming tastings and other events. And dont be surprised if after only one visit, you find that Avantastic becomes part of your vocabulary.

Vintners Celebrate the Arrival of the 2012 Vintage

Showcasing the Regions Diversity Annual Festival to be held in Santa Ynez Valley
The 100+ members of the Santa Barbara County Vintners Association will herald the arrival of spring and the beginning of the new vintage at their 30th annual Vintners Festival on April 21. The Festival will return to the Santa Ynez Valley on the pastoral grounds of The Carranza. As the festival has grown over the past 30 years, we look for venues that not only will accommodate all of our vintners and guests, but that also showcase the stunning countryside that makes Santa Barbara County one of the most beautiful locations on earth, states Jim Fiolek, Executive Director of the Association. Were excited about holding the Festival at The Carranza, a meadow tucked into a valley created by Zaca Creek as it leaves Foxen Canyon. We strive to move our venue to different areas every few years to allow our guests to see firsthand the many microclimates that support growing a diverse assortment of grape varieties. The Carranza is located on Zaca Station Road between The Firestone Vineyards and Highway 154, northwest of Los Olivos. A longtime tradition, the 30th annual Santa Barbara County Vintners Festival heralds the arrival of the new vintage. All winery members of the Association will be pouring samples of their wines at the festival, which will be complemented by a delectable array of culinary delights from area chefs, specialty food purveyors and caterers. Two live bands, wine related exhibitions and a silent auction to benefit local charities will round out the day. Great wines, superb food and friendly people doesnt get any better than that! states Fiolek. What better way to start off the spring season and the new vintage. Join us! The 30 Annual Vintners Festival will be held on April 21st, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at The Carranza, Los Olivos. In addition to the Festival itself, member wineries are planning open houses, winemaker dinners and special tastings throughout the weekend, and a four day Vintners Visa passport to 12 participating wineries is also being offered through the Association. For complete details and tickets, visit the Santa Barbara County Vintners Association website at www.SBCountyWines.com, or call the Association office at (805) 688-0881.

Gary Eberle of Eberle Winery Named Top 100 Influential People in the Wine Industry in America
There are many accolades you can attach to Gary Eberles career. He played defensive tackle for Joe Paterno at Penn State, he was the 4th winery in Paso Robles, he has the longest continuously run familyowned winery in the Paso Robles AVA and now he is number 65. Popular wine website Intowine.com recently completed a list of the top 100 Most Influential People in the Wine Industry in the United States and Eberle was one of just a few local wine professionals who made the list. Writer Mike Cervin says: Gary Eberle: has earned the title, the grandfather of Paso Robles wine. One of the first to purchase major acreage in Paso, and then build one of the first large commercial wineries long before anyone had ever heard of the area, his tireless promotion of the Paso Robles wine region is clearly evidence today with a region labeled as the next Napa. As the single most awarded winery in the country, constantly winning at competitions across the U.S., Eberle continues to promote not only Paso Robles, but wines which reflect a sense of place. Eberle co-founded the Paso Robles AVA, helped found the Paso Robles Vintners and Growers Association (currently the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance), has served 14 years on the board of the PRWCA, is currently on the board of the Wine Institute and helped found both the Rhone Rangers and the Family Winemakers of California. This year, Eberle is celebrating 33 years of fine winemaking in Paso Robles. WINEMAKER PROFILE: TOLOSA WINERY

LARRY BROOKS
By BreTTe aNN WomaCk

TOLOSA WINERY open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily 4910 edna road, san luis obispo (805) 782-0500 | www.tolosawinery.com

Larry Brooks has been making wine with Tolosa for over a decade. The fruits of his labor have earned numerous accolades and awards over the years and Tolosa has become one of the Central Coasts most popular wine tasting rooms for both locals and tourists. The variety and quality of the wine Tolosa produces attracts a wide spectrum of wine lovers from novices to connoisseurs. Larry Brooks dream of working with wine began well before the U.S. legal drinking age. Larry says that he fell in love with wine at the age of 17. He studied botany at Rutgers and ventured to UC Davis for graduate work. After graduating, Larry acted as winemaker for Acacia Winery beginning in 1979 and continued his professional experience with the Chalone group until going out on his own in 2000. While Larry has had experience working with several luxurious wineries, he is tremendously passionate about working with Tolosa. The exclusive SIP certified sustainable estate vineyards, the exclusive winemaking facilities, and especially the owners and staff of Tolosa keep Larry excited about making each vintage of wine. The latest vintage in the winery is currently the wines from 2011. Larry is particularly excited about the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc, which is currently being offered in the tasting room, because it is very kiwi in style, referring to the great Sauvignon Blancs which come from New Zealand. Larry also hints toward the quality of the 2011 Chardonnays. These will be absolute stunners when theyre released over the next year or two, so we certainly have something to look forward to. All winemakers have different types of interactions with the people who drink their wine. Larry takes pride in sharing his wines both in the tasting room and in wine shops and restaurants around the country. He especially loves showing people his wines for their first time and watching them fall in love with them. Larry also expresses his joy in seeing a restaurant patron drinking a wine he has made with their dinner. Many people assume that winemakers do not often actually enjoy the wines they make. This is not the case with Larry; last month he enjoyed Tolosas 2009 Lily Gil Pinot Noir. This is a single block wine of which only six barrels were produced. He calls the wine, an old fashioned Pinot Noir very elegant yet still complex. While there is no doubt Larry fuels his busy day by coffee, he unwinds by delighting in wine which he has so passionately produced throughout the years.

WINE COUNTRY DINING

Paso Robles Inn Steak House
By Allison Levine
Paso Robles Inn Steakhouse has been a favorite place for locals and visitors for more than 50 years, but their history dates even further back. Sitting on top of natural sulfur springs, the El Paso de Robles Hotel was opened in 1891. Built in the Victorian style, the hotel stood as a fortress in the small town of Paso Robles and was the destination of the day. But, the golden era of the El Paso de Robles Hotel and Hot Springs came to an end after a major fire in 1940 burned down everything except the Grand Ballroom. The Paso Robles Inn was reopened in 1942 as a modern bungalow-style hotel with surrounding gardens. While the inn was rich in Paso history, it did not maintain its landmark status until the Martin family bought the property in 1999 and restored it to its original beauty, including the original Grand Ballroom. Despite losing one building in the 2003 earthquake, the property currently offers 30 deluxe spa hotel rooms and six two-bedroom suites, all with mineral spring tubs in the rooms. With an outdoor patio and fire-pit tables overlooking the gardens, Paso Robles Inn Steakhouse,

Wine Tasting at

AVIL A BEACH
Avila Beach is surrounded by gentle, sloping hills, which define the harbor from the landward side. Three piers define the look from the oceanside; two are open to the public. Guests enjoy leisurely strolls out over the water, and the pier-based restaurants, which always offer fresh seasonal seafood. Avila is also an active fishing harbor with many fresh fish markets offering live crab, and fresh seafood.

PREFERRED TASTING ROOM

COSTA DE ORO
By CarolyN TUrNer

COSTA DE ORO 1331 s. Nicholson ave., santa maria open daily 11am-6pm, with extended hours on Fridays until 8pm (805) 922-1468 | email: info@cdowinery.com | www.cdowinery.com

If you heard someone say, whats on tap? when walking into a wine tasting room, you just might find yourself double checking to make sure you came to the right place. But when you walk into the Costa De Oro tasting room in Santa Maria and ask that question, the answer will surprise you. We just started experimenting with our Wine on Tap, said Gary Burk, owner and winemaker at Costa De Oro Winery. We always have one red and one white blend on tap, and it changes every few weeks, depending on whats available. These blends are only available on tap, and visitors will be able to taste them for only $7/glass ($5/glass for wine club members). Growlers will also be available for only $20 and $15 when you bring the bottle back in for refills. Along with the Wines on Tap, Costa De Oros single varietal wines including Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon are available to taste in a flight, or enjoy by the glass for only $10. Also, keep an eye out for several new releases including Temperanillo, Petite Sirah as well as the Reserva Dorada Chardonnay and Reserva Oro Rojo Pinot Noir. Most of the wines are created from estate fruit grown at Costa De Oros Gold Coast Vineyard, which was planted in 1989 by Burks father Rob Burk, and his business partner Bob Espinola. The two men founded Gold Coast Farms in 1978, which began by growing various row crops including cilantro, broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, sweet corn and strawberries. But after they created their first wine with their estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, they knew they were hooked. So in 2006 they transformed their original strawberry stand off the 101 freeway, into the tasting room that stands there today. It didnt take long before Burk joined the family business, bringing his passion for music to the equation. Visitors often have the chance to meet and taste with Burk and his wife on the weekends, especially during the Friday Night Wine Downs, featuring live music every Friday night from 5 to 8 p.m.. My favorite part about being a winemaker is that ultimately you can share the wine with others, said Gary Burk, winemaker at Costa De Oro Winery. I love the satisfaction that comes from connecting with people and sharing that enjoyment.

Wine Tasting in
SPECIALIZING IN SANTA BARBARA & CENTRAL COAST PINOT NOIRS

LOS OLIVOS
fontes & phillips wines
With the culmination of over thirty five years of wine industry experience, winemaker Alan Phillips and his wife, Rochelle Fontes, began the Fontes & Phillips winery in 2008. A small, family endeavor, the wines showcase Santa Barbara County and incorporate Alans storied history with specific varietals as well as his intimate knowledge of the regions appellations and vineyards. Alan Phillips history in the wine industry began in the midseventies. A graduate of UC Davis Enology Department, he moved to the Napa Valley in 1976. In Napa, Alan helped produce wines for many notable wineries, including S. Anderson where he had the distinction of meeting and working under Andre Tchelistcheff (Californias patron saint of Pinot Noir and much more). Then, in 1981, Alan co-founded and helped develop Monticello Cellars with the Corley family. Following the 1990 harvest, and ten years as winemaker for Monticello, Alan ventured out on his own to work with a variety of small Napa Valley wineries. Various consulting jobs led him to New Zealand, Germany, France, Spain and Portugal, giving him the opportunity to make wine and view the wine business from a global level. In the mid-nineties Alan, whose ambition and perspective had turned toward Burgundian varietals, took the position of Winemaker and General Manager at Byington Winery in the

Santa Cruz Mountains. While at Byington Winery, Alan met his future bride Rochelle Fontes. United, the pair set out for Santa Barbara County in 1998 when Alan was hired as Director of Winemaking and General Manager of Foley Estates and Lincourt Vineyard. For a decade Alan perfected the Foley and Lincourt wineries, as well as working on a growing number of properties in the Foley Family Wines portfolio. Ultimately, Alan left Foley Family in 2008 but his decade of winemaking experiences had rooted both he and Rochelle to Santa Barbara's wine country. From Sta. Rita Hills to Santa Maria Valley to Santa Ynez Valley, and everything in between, Alan gained hands-on experiences with many of the regions most respected and beloved vineyards. In addition to his experiences, the wines he made in that decade alone had garnered over 100 90+ scores (in leading industry magazines) as well as the critical acclaim of having a wine noted as a Wine Spectator Top 100. Today, Alan is carrying on his tradition of winemaking excellence with the wines of Fontes & Phillips. A family affair, Alan works in tandem with Rochelle, a wine industry veteran herself, and their daughter Shelby, to share their love of Santa Barbara and its distinct wine regions. Truly a labor of love, even the bottling and packaging is done by hand as each bottle is personally labeled by Alan and Rochelle with pewter hand-made labels from South America.

SOLVANG
Wandering Dog Wine Bar
By Jody Williams
Wandering Dog Wine Bar is a family owned business by people who are passionate about wine. Director di Vino, Charles CT Williams, has an extensive knowledge of the local wine country and has a knack for picking out under the radar wines before anyone else has heard of them. Everything here is palate-picked meaning that we try every wine that we carry and are not influenced by the latest trends or scores. In fact, you will not a see a score for any wines anywhere on our site. Leave your leash behindit is more than just a motto, it is a way of life for us. We encourage you to try wines youve never heard of from producers you didnt know existed in places that you never thought produced wine. This is not the place to sample your typical Cabernets and Chardonnays and chances are, you may only have heard of half of the wines that we carry. With a wide variety of wine, beer and sparkling from artisan producers along the Central Coast, as well as from around the world, there is always something for everyone. Enjoy one of our themed flights or order a glass of wine and relax with friends. If you need a little break from all of the wine, do a beer flight instead, or just kick back with a cold one! The only thing better than wine and beer is having some little bites to go along with it, so we offer a nice array of gourmet antipasto and cheese platters as well as delicious chocolate truffles and caramels. For those visiting on a Thursday, stop in for the Blind Tasting from 4 to 7 p.m. Each month is a different focus and guests are challenged to match up regions, varietals, price points and vintages of the four wines included. There are also fun wine classes throughout the year on

Wine Tasting in

Tuesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and live music on the weekends. Check out the website, www.wanderingdogwinebar.com to see what other fun events we have on the horizon. By combining all the best parts of being a bar and the best parts of wine tasting, Wandering Dog Wine Bar offers a unique experience every day. Wander on in during your next visit to the Santa Ynez Valley and leave your leash behind with our eclectic variety of wine and beer. Wandering Dog Wine Bar is located at 1539C Mission Drive, Solvang (next to Paulas Pancake House) and is open Monday through Thursday from 1 to 8 p.m., Friday from 1 to 10 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information call (805) 686-9126 or visit www.wanderingdogwinebar.com.

La Vie Vineyards
La Vie Vineyards created their first batch of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in 2000, out of a small warehouse shared with others in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto. In the last decade, this passion project that was started right out of college has evolved into a small, family winery focused on making fine wines to be enjoyed with friends, good scenery and great tunes. Mt. Zion Vineyard, their naturally farmed property atop the Santa Rita Hills, is the source for their beloved Rasta Rita Pinot, and celebrates Ariel and Angela Lavies love of reggae, roots and dub music. Other bottlings come from grapes purchased throughout the Central Coast, each representing distinct terroir from various wine-growing regions so that a variety of flavors can be enjoyed, for whatever mood or moon phase we find ourselves in. Their latest creation, a newborn daughter welcomed in 2011, has made this vintage their best to date. Her name Carmella means Gods Fruitful Vineyard in Hebrew, and has a special significance for the winemaking couple. Carmel Valley is the first wine growing region in Israel, and Mt. Carmel Vineyard outside Lompoc was Ariel and Angelas favorite vineyard when relocating to this area. The La Vies Mt. Zion Vineyard is situated on a nearby hill from Mt. Carmel in the Sta. Rita Hills, and their Rasta Rita Pinot shares similar characteristics of bright cherry and chalky earth. La Vie Vineyards cozy tasting room in Lompoc is located in the Wine Ghetto, in the same location they make their tasty treats. Stop in to meet Ariel, Angela and Carmella, and enjoy the specialties that La Vie has to offer.

Some of the restaurants are SeaGrass, Fishouse, Jane, Paradise Caf and Emilios. Every month Corks n Crowns changes its wine and beer selections, giving the customer a new experience every time they visit.
