Library forum pits books against students

taylor rodrigues Gazette staff If you can never find a study space on campus, youre not alone. Western libraries are holding two forums on March 29 for undergraduate students to voice their study space needs. A common problem that I hear from students is the lack of study space on campus. This problem becomes more obvious when exams and midterms are occurring, Warren Cracknell, undergraduate science student senator, said. He argued it is important to invest in our libraries to ensure that students needs are met. The problem isnt necessarily space, but suitable space. There are indeed many places to study, especially during the warmer weather. However, many places are in Internet dead zones, have no electrical outlets, or are located in very busy areas with high traffic and noise levels, Jared Fedora, a second-year political science student, said. Fedora said he and many of his peers have difficulties finding a suitable study place on campus, especially during the afternoons and early evenings. Cracknell explained short-term and long-term solutions are necessary to address this issue. The university is working on a more short-term solution in

terms of moving more volumes into storage to make way for additional study space, Cracknell said. [However], the student senators believe that a long-term solution needs to be made to address these problems. Cracknell would like to see a new learning commons, similar to the one announced by Kings College, on main campus. A learning commons combines study spaces with elements of a library, and offers greater flexibility than a traditional library. We have already done quite a bit of re-purposing work at Taylor Library, Kim Cornell, assistant librarian, said. We do want to ensure that were addressing the needs for our undergraduate and

graduate students. She explained many areas have already been re-purposed to create more study spaces, and Western libraries are considering re-purposing more. She added most areas repurposed previously held shelves of print journals that the university has an electronic or digital copy of. It is more difficult to put books and monographs into storage because even old and infrequently used ones may be relevant to some programs. Cornell acknowledged the libraries have opportunities to better serve the needs of undergraduate students, graduate students and faculty. She said there is a shortage of electrical outlets in Taylor because the librarys biggest part is an addition that is about 20 years old. Obviously, they couldnt have anticipated laptops at that point in time and that need for power, Cornell said. We really dont have a facility or rooms that are amenable to [group] needs. [Were] sort of exploring what collaborative learning needs [students] have when they are working in groups, Cornell added. The forums will be held Thursday from 12-1:30 p.m. and from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Taylor Library Kellogg Room. Western libraries invite all undergraduate students to attend. Pizza will be served.

Budget leaves tuition break in place

Cheryl Stone neWs features editor Ontario students will keep their tuition grants and see some small cuts, but thats about it. Yesterday, the Ontario Government presented their budget to the Legislative Assembly. The budget, which maintains the 30-per-centoff-tuition grant given to students in January, will be voted on in the coming days. Critics of the budget say it doesnt do enough to help some of the ongoing issues facing universities. Ontarios edge in the global economy is our highly skilled and educated workforce, Dwight Duncan, Ontario finance minister, explained to the assembly. Earlier in the day, Sam Andrey, executive director of the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance, explained there were several other concerns the lobby group had been pushing, including mental health, online learning and teaching quality. There remains more work to be done, particularly on improving the quality of the learning environment, Sean Madden, president of OUSA, explained in a press release after the budget was announced. With this budget, our universities will continue to operate with the least per-student funding and highest tuition fees of any province, while teaching quality and student success remain pressing issues, Madden said. While postsecondary education has been spared from more harmful cuts, we feel like this was a missed opportunity to begin investing in these important issues. Madden also noted several smaller grant programs had been cancelled so the province could balance its books. Programs that were no longer receiving public funding include the Ontario Work Study Program and the Ontario Special Bursary. Ontario must eliminate the deficit to strengthen the foundation of the economy, Duncan said. Madden also noted several infrastructure problems on campuses were put on hold. Graeme Stewart, communications and government relations manager for the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations, noted many universities were already putting off infrastructure projects because of a lack of funding. OCUFA wanted to see a longterm funding strategy implemented for universities. One of the things were trying to get at is a longer term, predictable plan for increasing funding to make sure its going to do what we need it to do, Stewart explained. The budget is being debated in the Ontario House of Commons today.

Switch off for Earth Hour

Cities and homes around the world will go dark on Saturday night at 8 p.m. for the sixth annual Earth Hour. The environmental campaign encourages participants to stop using electricity for one hour each year, to push people to think more about how much energy they consume. The annual campaign, which began in Sydney, Australia in 2007, was started by the World Wildlife Fund and has since grown into a global phenomenon. According to the Earth Hour website, In 2011, Earth Hour saw hundreds of millions of people across 135 countries switch off. [Earth Hour] encourages anyone and everyone to power down for an hourturn lights off, turn

the computer off, turn the TV off, or at least conserve as much energy as you can at a given momentas a symbol, I suppose, of wanting to eliminate mass energy consumption, Marissa Joffre, vice-president campus issues for the University Students Council, explained. Joffre explained the USC service EnviroWestern is participating by encouraging the approximately 6,000 students living in residence to power down. They dont actually turn any of the power off in residence, but they do have a fairly large informational campaign in every residence happening around the 8 p.m. mark, encouraging people to turn the lights off in their room, she said. Because Earth Hour occurs on the weekend, the USCs Earth Hour activities will be confined to

the residences. However, that isnt stopping the university from making an effort, Beverly Ayeni, energy and environment manager at Western, explained. Were going to do some big shut downs and just try to do a big push to get employees and students to turn off lights and that sort of thing, she said, explaining air handling units in all buildings on campus will be shut down for the hour. London has been named the fifth best place to cheat in Canada. According to data from AshleyMadison.com, a Toronto-based dating site aimed at providing services to married people who want to have an affair, London is the city with the the fifth most philanderers per capita. Ottawa is the first, followed by Saskatoon, Calgary and Edmonton. In the last month alone, the site has been visited by 320,420 Canadian men and 143,200 Canadian women. The site has 13 million members in 22 countries, with the majority in the United States. Noel Biderman, founder of AshleyMadison.com, also stated that London has the oldest users among those cities. The average age for men from London is 48, while the average age for women is 40. Many people have an affair because they are in sexless marriages, but they do not wish to end a marriage based on one small aspect. They may have children or financial obligations, and the affair allows them to be satisfied in all aspects of their lives while their relationship stays intact, Biderman said. When asked if he thought the website damaged families, Biderman said he thought it did the opposite. Many people using AshleyMadison.com are actually attempting to save their marriage. They are unfulfilled in one aspect, but know that a marriage is more than the sum of its parts, he said. Anthony Poon

tuition increase is a necessary evil

City council pay increase raises eyebrows

Victoria marroccoli Gazette staff The City of London is presenting members with a 3.1 per cent pay raise on April 10. The 3.1 per cent increase is guaranteed for nonelected city staff, but has raised the question of whether city councillors, who currently work part-time, should hold their positions full time. Stephen Orser, councillor for Ward 4, addressed the issues with continuing as a part-time council. Were a full-time city with fulltime problems and the voters have said twice that they want a fulltime council, he said. City council has not had a raise in pay since 2008, and there is concern about how it plans to maintain its tax freeze while giving councillors a raise. While some councillors hold jobs outside their position on the council, Orser said this is not practical. You cant ride two horses, he said. Since the last pay raise years ago, my responsibilities and obligations have definitely increased, and as a part-time worker on a full-time council, I dont feel adequately compensated. Denise Brown, councillor for Ward 11, expressed doubt about the councils position on their current salary. We work 40 hours or more per week on city meetings and other city issues. However, I knew the rate of pay when I was elected, and it is my opinion that council should not be voting on its own remuneration, she said. I would rather us vote in 2014 for the next council term. Brown argued money is not a deal-breaker for her dedication. In general, yes, I feel the pay is adequate. I am very proud to serve Londoners, and we all have the opportunity of working elsewhere, part time or full time. Harold Usher, councillor for Ward 12, also agreed the issue is about more than just a raise. We do it because we love to serve the community, but this doesnt mean we will do it for free, Usher said. It is only fair that the people who work for the community are compensated adequately. Orser also addressed the concern about continuing the tax freeze while giving city staff a raise, saying this money is already in the budget and would come from city savings. Brown compared this amount to that of the budget. The money we are speaking of is less than $20,000. This is a very small amount of the overall budget.

aaron Zaltzman neWs editor Post-secondary students across Quebec are marching out of classes all across the province to protest a planned 75 per cent jump in tuition over the next five years. While the fury on display may be motivated by the sticker shock of a 75 per cent increase, the protestors are wrong in thinking the tuition hike is unjustified. The first, and perhaps most obvious reason, is that Quebec tuition rates are already the lowest in the country. At McGill, the average student from Quebec pays $2,167.80 per year, which is roughly 40.4 per cent of the average student fees in the rest of Canada. Even with the proposed increase, in five years Quebec tuition rates will still be $3,792.80, or roughly $1,500 less than the national average. While supporters of the protest may argue that the national tuition rates are too high, the reality is that the government still heavily subsidizes university, and its contributing to government debt. Quebec post-secondary education tuition rates have been frozen for over 15

years, which has resulted in an educational system that places 80 per cent of the financial burden on tax payers and has left Quebec universities $500 million in debt. The students protesting may frame this as an issue of accessibility, but even that has to be adjusted for reality. If post-secondary education is a right, which I would argue is an unfortunate result of decades of over-selling such a product, it doesnt have to be free, just reasonable and equally accessible. If these protests are an expression of such principles, why are the students not arguing for bracketed tuition rates? Ignoring a cumulative 42 per cent interest increase alone is a recipe for disaster, and the Quebec government is taking steps to curb the damage. Even in Ontario, which has the highest tuition rates in Canada, the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance is willing to accept inflationary increases of roughly three per cent per year. Students have gotten too used to the low tuition fees in Quebec, and need to deal with the reality of solving the problems these rates have caused.

alex Carmona neWs editor One of the biggest problems with post-secondary education in Ontario is accessibility. With an average cost of $5,388 to $6,640 over the past four years, our province has the highest tuition rates in the country. Thats why the Ontario Undergraduate Student Association spends so much time fighting to help those from financially disadvantaged backgrounds break in to the post-secondary system. Quebecs colleges and universities, on the other hand, lie on the complete opposite end of the spectrum. Quebec currently possesses what has been described as a unique accessibility level, where nearly everyone can afford a postsecondary educationso long as theyre a Quebec native. This is what a success looks like, people. Many of the accessibility problems we face here in Ontario are literally non-existent for Quebecers. Why, then, is taking this system off the table an option that was even considered, let alone

implemented. The problem here isnt that Quebec tuition is too lowits that tuition throughout most of the other provinces is too high. Post-secondary education has effectively become a pre-requisite for successful employment at this point, and this is a reality the Quebec provincial government needs to deal with. Yes, both McGill and Quebec itself are massively in debt, but I cant accept that heaping an additional financial burden on the disadvantaged is the best answer. Nor am I the only person who thinks thisthese tuition increases have not been accepted as a critical necessity. The Parti Quebecois has promised to immediately cancel the hikes should they be elected in the upcoming provincial election. I wont go so far as to say Quebec should implement another 10 year tuition freeze. The Quebec rates havent been adjusted for inflation in a decade, and a more moderate increase is probably called for. More importantly, it also wouldnt draw tens of thousands of students into the streets of Montreal.

Opinions
Libraries are for books
During exam time, libraries on campus get crowded to the max. During a senate meeting this week, the idea of moving books into storage to make room for more study space was brought up. Depending on who you ask or where you go, youll get a mixed response on this issue. Some people will say the libraries are consistently full, and there needs to be more room. Others will say that you can find a space if you need to, and though libraries are busy during exam time, you dont absolutely need to be in a library to study. What were seeing is a shift in the purpose of libraries. To the average student, libraries are little more than just quiet study spaces that happen to have walls of books. Maybe these texts make for good academic-themed study decor, but most students who study at the library dont need to use any of the librarys resources, except a table, chair and maybe an outlet for their laptops. But if our libraries have basically become quiet study areas, should we be shifting these books into storage to accommodate the influx of students come exam time? The university definitely needs study space during the grueling half a month that is exam time, so if students are finding they need extra space, something should be done to make room for people. But does moving books out of the library make any sense at all? Libraries are made for the purpose of keeping these books available to the public. Its nice to have tables set up to create a quiet environment for the academics who use the library, but to get rid of books to make space for people defeats the purpose of the library. There are plenty of spaces to study, but there is only really one place for books. That being said, libraries are probably the only quiet, private spaces to study on campus. Instead of moving library books to create these places, why not designate some of the many empty classrooms as study spaces? It may be more difficult to monitor for people abusing the space, but if an environment similar to a library could be created in an otherwise unused area, this would solve the study space problem without displacing our precious books. The Gazette Editorial Board Kaitlyn mcGrath opinions editor For one whole hour, were all going to think about the Earthgood for us! Thatll surely make up for the other 8,759 hours most of us arent thinking about the Earth at all, right? The World Wide Fund for Nature launched the event six years ago in Australia, and since then it has crept its way into North America and the rest of the globe. This hour, conveniently coined Earth Hour, is scheduled to occur from 8:30-9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 31. So for an hour on Saturday, those of us who remember this is occurring or those of us who arent in the Ceeps line-upwill flick off the lights and rely solely on the illumination from whatever other electronic-carbon-eating gadget we so choose to use during this agonizing hour with no light. I may sound a bit cynical right now, but I can assure you that is not my intentionI love the Earth, I swear. And even further than that, I think at its very essence, Earth Hour is a very noble idea. Sure, it might only be a minuscule gesture in the grand scheme of things really, how much carbon emissions are really going to be saved from one hour of no light? But thats probably not the point of this worldwide event. In fact, Earth Hour is meant as a reminder, or a jumping off point, to encourage people to become more conscious of the amount of energy they are needlessly consuming everyday. Its meant to make strides in creating a greener and cleaner world, Josh Laughren, climate and energy director of WWF Canada, said. So it starts with an hour and you think, Geethat was easy. I can save energy all the time. But just like the

our Earth needs more than an hour

ozone layer, there are holes in this sentiment. My issue with Earth Hour is that while its presented in an easy and simple way, most people, when the clock strikes 9:31 p.m., will simply pat themselves on the back, switch their light back on and feel pretty darn good with themselves. It gains attention, sure. But does it really achieve much more than a few days of publicity? That is something Im less sure about. They do say, there is no such thing as bad publicity, so maybe thats applicable in this case. For example, take the National Hockey League, which has vowed to dim their lights during all games that are occurring between 8:309:30 p.m. Not only does this benefit the cause because I can only assume the massive NHL arenas certainly eat up a massive amount of energybut this also helps spread the word to the viewers taking in the games about what Earth Hour is trying to representa conscious effort to conserve energy. Although that being said, its a bit paradoxical that the lights will be dimmed during the game, yet the NHL hopes thousands of people are watching it on their TVsusing energy. But valiant effort nonetheless, NHL. So at this point, Im essentially doing exactly what I shouldnt be doing when writing a columnIm sitting on the fence about the issue of Earth Hour. On the one hand, I can see the argument of every little bit helps, but on the other hand, does every little bit really help? If Earth Hour saves some energy and gets people thinking, if only for an hour, then I suppose its achieved a kind of victory, no matter how small. But if you ask me, Earth Hour is merely a faint flicker of light against a massive black hole of a problem.

Nicole Gibillini arts & life features editor With warm weather on the rise, exercising inside may seem like a drag. Why not get outside and enjoy the sun while getting in shape for the summer? Here are some tips, tricks and routines for you to test before you try the gym. Create your own workout Whether you want to run or focus on building muscle, you can design your own routine. Create your own circuits, and get your fiends involvedit makes a huge difference, says Sandra Hamilton, a recent Western kinesiology graduate and certified fitness instructor. She recommends four to six exercises per circuitsuch as burpees, dips, push-ups, lunges or squat presses. Next, determine how many reps to perform of each exercise. Complete the circuit three times, and then create two more. In order to maximize your workout, Hamilton recommends spiking your heart rate. You want it to be tough because then you get a break and go back at it again, she says.

Start running If circuits arent your thing, you can still achieve an intense workout by running. For new runners, consistency is important. Brandon Laan, a running coach, co-founder of runnersfeed.com and a former Western student, says its best to create a routine and exercise at the same time every day. I like to encourage the morning because there are fewer people up and less distractions, he says. If youre new to running, Laan suggests striving for two days a week. I basically create a fourweek plan, so three days the second week, four days the third week and five days the fourth week. Find a friend Finding a training partner will help keep you motivated. Find someone in your dorm or who lives with you or near you, sucker them into it at the beginning and write down some goals, Laan says. Even if they dont have experience, its about keeping each other honest. Laan encourages runners to create goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timelysomething you can check off

Stretch Before exercising outdoors, dynamic stretchingstretching while movingis key. You can do anything from walk lunges, to walking calf raises, arm circles, jogging, side shuffling, crossovers, leg swings, butt kicks and high knees. Hamilton also notes its important to focus on warming up pre-workout and stretching afterwards. Laan agrees. Im a big fan of active isolated stretching, and this is basically taking your body through its natural range of motion, getting away from static stretching so running is a dynamic activity, he explains. Eat smart The time and content of your meals can affect the quality of your workout. Hamilton recommends drinking water throughout the day along with light, healthy snacks such as yogurt, granola bars and apples. Laan warns to be cautious of what you eat before a run. Im always a fan of a bagel, banana, a power baranything like that, he says. Take two to three hours beforehand to actually digest your food.

Her newest album Up! showcases her veteran song writing abilities and powerful vocalseven the guitar cant overpower her at its strongest. The album features 12 catchy tracks plus a bonus remix of the title song. Songs like Bel Ami and Incredible Places proves that Bingham could easily deliver the next summer anthem, pleasing old and new fans alike. Recipe, The Edge You Walk and Open Letter dont feature the same powerful guitar as other songs on the album, and her vocals fall short when she isnt able to belt out lyrics. However, they do offer a quick respite from the strong instrumentals, and in this respect, add to the album rather than detract from it. sleeping pills do more mirror, mirror has two faces harm than good
megan devlin Gazette staff Those little blue sleeping pills may deliver a deeper sleep than you were hoping for. According to research conducted by the Scripps Clinic Viterbi Family Sleep Centre in California, sleeping pills, including those most commonly used, may be linked with early death. A recent study found patients taking sleeping pills were 4.6 times more likely to die over the course of the 2.5 year study than their matched non-medicated counterparts. The study tracked over 10,000 patients taking sleeping pills and twice as many who were not, matching the participants for age, sex and health status. Mortality increased with dosage. Patients taking high doses of sleeping pills had 35 per cent more instances of cancer. Sleeping pills were found to increase the development of certain cancers, including lymphoma, lung, colon and prostate cancerseven more so than smoking. Daniel Kripke, lead author of the study, questions the validity of continuing to prescribe sleeping pills to patients. The risks are much too high, Kripke says. I dont know of any medication sold that has that kind of risk except tobacco. Sleeping pills are similar to smoking a pack or two a day. You wont find a doctor recommending that. Kripke explains there are several biochemical mechanisms behind sleeping pills harmful effects, including slowing the firing of neurons. You may do very confusing things like fall, crash an automobile, or behave in a bizarre and dangerous way [while taking sleeping pills], Kripke says. He also explains sleeping pills were documented to increase the risk of infection and depression in patients, things that could lead to death. Kripke says a more viable method for treating insomnia is cognitive-behavioural therapy. This approach attempts to change the patients ideas, attitudes and behaviours towards sleep. Strategies include limiting time in bed to just the time that you will be sleeping, getting up at the same time every day and minimizing naps. Kripke also has advice for students considering sleeping pills. He says the pills arent a good option if you struggle with going to bed early enough or to get up in time for class, and suggests students try to get more bright light in the morning.

Directed by: Tarsem Singh Starring: Julia Roberts, Lily Collins The famous fairytale question Who is the fairest of them all? takes on a new meaning in Mirror, Mirror, Tarsem Singhs newest film adaptation of popular Grimm fairytale Snow White. The film makes use of the classic fairytale archetypes while still giving a nod to the gritty and gruesome origins of the Brothers Grimm tale. Interestingly, the film discards the idea of image altogether in its portrayal of fairest, using the concept of image to focus instead on the themes of oppression and justice. The unique opening animation sets the audience up for the journey they are about to undertake. Lifelike, but whimsical, porcelain figures outline the childhood fairytale of Snow White the audience might expect to see. Like the porcelain figures in the animation however, the charactersand the audiences expectationswill inevitably crack.

Andrei Calinescu Gazette

There is something immediately amiss about the story, as the audience realizes it is not told from Snow Whites (Lily Collins) perspective at all, but rather the Evil Queens (Julia Roberts). The opening narrative, much like the film, constantly undercuts itself with sarcastic and biting humour. The film builds upon the momentum of the Queens cleverness and Roberts nuanced performance, continuing its aggressive style of humour throughout. In the absence of the King, the barren winter landscape Singh creates for the film gives the tale the grandeur the audience would expect, and provides a nice canvas for the films colourful charactersboth the Queens courts and the mysterious forest creatures to develop against. The films lavish costuming is visually stunning but not excessive, as characters costumes are limited, reflecting only their immediate usefulness. The costumes provide added humour to the film as dwarves become giants, princes become victims of robbery, and princesses become warriors. Singhs film adaptation plays with the idea of the public and

private and the fairytale image, as characters fight against their societys convention, refusing to stoop to what others would tell them to be. Mirror, Mirror pulls no punches, staging elaborate yet comedic fight scenes between Snow White and the Dwarves and the Queens guards. The cinematography enhances these fight scenes as well as other aspects of the film. Film-goers will be surprised by the creative artistry behind not just the films cinematography, but also conventional fairytale images like the Queens magic mirror and the Dwarves humble cabin in the woods. The dwarves themselves are as much mentors to Snow White as they are fearsome leaders in their own right, loosely based on historical political figures such as Napoleon. Like any historical strategist would advise, Its important to know when youve been beaten. Singhs Mirror, Mirror revolves around this very concept, and this imaginative film adaptation, like its characters, is not going down without a fight.

Sports
Kaleigh rogers MultiMedia director Every year around this time, a certain strain of spring fever sets in, March Madness. From coast to coast across the United States and Canada, it seems everybody has a vested interest in the National Collegiate Athletic Association mens division I basketball championship, the preeminent competition for college basketball in the United States. When you have the president of the United States filling out a bracket, I think that really tells you the scope that were talking about, Greg Sansone, vice-president operations for The Score television network, said. While The Score doesnt air current NCAA championship games, they join in on the excitement each spring by airing memorable March Madness games from the past with notable players including Michael Jordan. Every year, a few Canadianborn players in the tournament are highlighted by Canadian media, but at the end of the day, this is an American competition and a college one at that. So, why the hype north of the border? Its the bracket. Its being able to have a personal investment in what youre watching, Sansone explained. Its become a part of the American fabricthe brackets and making your selections for March Madness.

misplaced madness north of the border?

canadians craze over american sports based on brackets
When you have the president of the united states filling out a bracket, i think that really tells the scope that were talking about.
vice-president operations for the score said of the hype surrounding March Madness

Greg sansone,

But its quickly become a part of the Canadian fabric as well. While exact figures for the number of Canadians tuning in to the championship are difficult to pin down, the number of hours devoted to coverage of the tournament speaks to its popularity. Full coverage of the championship can be found on The Score, TSN and sports segments on CTV and CBC newscasts, showing just how far March Madness has reached. Whats not clear is why so much focus is given to athletics down

south while our own college athletes receive barely any notice at all. In the United States, its just a totally different culture, Brad Campbell, coach of the mens basketball team at Western, said. Canadians love sports as well, but with Americans its just a way of life. In Canada, were very supportive towards hockey and our infrastructure towards hockey is incredible. In the United States, its that infrastructure like we have for hockey, but for almost all sports. He also noted the nature of the tournament lends itself to more attention as many future professional basketball players get scouted and get their start in this very tournament. But for some, the real excitement remains above the 49th parallelfuture NBA-ers or no. I find the storylines north of the border extremely exciting and thats where I invest my time and interest. Theres no shortage of great stories to tell, Marg McGregor, CEO of Canadian Interuniversity Sport, said. Canadians are kind of self-deprecating and theres a misconception that if its south of the border it must be better, which I dont subscribe to at all. Instead, McGregor thinks Canadian media and public alike should be focusing their attention on our own athletes rather than always turning our attention to the states. To her, thats the real madness.

Group alignments ensure exciting 2012 Euros

ukraine and poland prepare to host for first time
John Petrella Gazette staff As the school year winds down and exam season rushes upon us like a terrible nightmare, the world of soccer is bracing itself for the European Championships. The Euros occur every four years, and fall two years after each World Cup. Euro 2012 promises to be a feast of soccer, and this year will take on a distinctive Polish and Ukrainian flavour. This tournament will be hosted by the two Eastern European nations, and marks the first time the championships have been held in either country. The field of 16 of the top European national soccer teams was decided over a gruelling two year qualifying campaign, with the first place teams from each qualifying group joining the host nations in the spectacle that is Euro 2012. The second-place finishers were drawn into a playoff round consisting of a home and away match against a fellow group of runners-up, for the privilege to book their spot at the Euro 2012 dinner table. The 16 teams were decided in November and were divided into four groups of four, with the top two teams from each group moving on to the quarterfinals. This draw resulted in the proclamation of the vaunted Group of Death being group B, as traditional rivals Netherlands, ranked third in the world, and Germany, ranked second, headline a group also featuring Cristiano Ronaldos Portugal, ranked sixth. On the flip side of group B is the tepid Group Aregarded as the easiest group of the four. In fact, the highest ranked team in this group is the 13th ranked Russians, who are coming off of a difficult qualifying section that saw them struggle to hold off the Republic of Ireland. Group C is highlighted by the tournament favourite and number one ranked Spain. The Spanish, on the back of a World Cup 2010 victory, look to become the first team in history to repeat as Euro champions. Traditional contender Italy will look to avenge a poor showing at the 2010 World Cup, as coach Cesare Prandelli has taken to injecting youth into the national team highlighted by the enigmatic Mario Balotelli of Manchester City. Group D pits foes France and England against one another. The French, like the Italians, are looking to bury the memories of a horrendous World Cup. New coach Laurent Blanc has also looked to provide a culture change in the team, introducing many new players such as precocious forward Karim Benzema, who was left off of the World Cup team. The English embark on their usual media-fuelled circus at another major tournament, however, this time a great amount of uncertainty will be found in the English camp as their coach, Fabio Capello, recently resigned, and no permanent replacement has been named. The English were dealt a further blow as superstar Wayne Rooney was handed a two-match suspension for a red card in a qualifying game, putting the English into a sticky wicket even before the first whistle has been sounded. Euro 2012 promises to excite the masses, and the beautiful new stadiums constructed in the host nations should provide a stunning backdrop. Not even exams can ruin the appetite and anticipation for June 8.
