REGIONAL SALES OF LASERS TO REACH $12.5 BILLION IN 2016 Wellesley, Mass.

In a recent release, GLOBAL MARKETS FOR LASER SYSTEMS, COMPONENTS, AND MATERIALS (SMC023E) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the sales of lasers in the three main regions of the Americas; Asia-Pacific (APAC); and the European, Middle Eastern, African (EMEA) region totaled nearly $8 billion for 2011. That value is projected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.5% between 2011 and 2016, reaching $12.5 billion in 2016. The region made up of the Americas was valued at $2.3 billion in 2011 and is expected to increase at a CAGR of 7.9% to reach $3.4 billion in 2016. The APAC region, worth $3.3 billion in 2011, should be worth $5.5 billion in 2016, a CAGR of 10.8%. The EMEA region was valued at nearly $2.3 billion in 2011 and, after increasing at a 9.1% CAGR, should be worth nearly $3.6 billion in 2016. Laser is an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. The newest laser categories covered in this report are fiber lasers, which became commercially available over the last five years. The operating philosophy and principles are pretty much the same as lasers from decades ago. In spite of this relative calm on the theoretical front, lasers continue to be part of cutting-edge devices across verticals. The generic nature of lasers appeal also leads to interesting dilemmas. This is most clearly seen in the wide range of average selling price values of laser modules depending on their application and energy medium. These prices can range from as little as a dollar to tens of thousands of dollars. It would not be out of place to mention that lasers are a fairly accurate indicator of the health of the markets at large. This report tries to reconcile the tremendous diversity of laser markets across vertical applications and in exchange medium types. The dollar sales and shipment volumes for the following verticals are considered: telecommunications, instrumentation and scientific research, medicine, energy, defense, computing, industrial retail, and many others. This report will be most relevant to the laser module manufactures as well as market prospects for lasers, allied component suppliers who identify the sunrise and sunset technology trends among lasers, original equipment manufacturers, and other laser integrators who analyze the prospects of the laser technology employed by them in their devices, equipment and products, as well as anyone interested in learning more about lasers and their market outlook in the coming years.

In addition to SMC023E BCC also has published SMC072A, SMC073A, and SMC074A. These reports cover laser markets with focuses, respectively, on the Americas, EMEA, and the Asia-Pacific region. SUMMARY FIGURE DOLLAR SALES FOR LASERS, BY REGION, 2009-2016 ($ MILLIONS)
