Facing the Energy Challenge Concept Paper for Solar Water Heating Solution
To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly ~Henri Bergson~
These examples show, but a very limited view of the broad range of applications of hot water in the industry. All water heating is based on the boiler system. The boilers are usually run on natural gas, because of its cheap price in recent years. A large part of the industry also utilizes HFO, which is three times more expensive then natural gas.
These components are integrated to design an optimum system which could generate the requisite amount of thermal energy, which can be transported to the water storage tank to raise the water temperature from 20 degrees Celsius (room temperature) to 80 degrees Celsius (hot water temperature). The overall system efficiency is around 50 % which is equivalent to the system efficiency of an average boiler system. With the integration of this system into the existing boiler system, natural gas consumption is reduced from 50-70%
Business Model
Solar water heating is not only a technically efficient way of industrial water heating but an extremely cost effective solution. It gives a very firm and quick ROI and also presents the opportunity to tap the carbon economy. The cost and associated ROI is dependent on the amount of hot water requirements. An indicative case study is presented below for heating 40,000 liters of water per day. Energy Required for heating 40,000 lit of water per day Energy Supplied in Boiler system for heating 40,000 lit of water (at a 50% efficiency system) Cost of Natural Gas for Boiler System (at 1.5Rs per KWh) per day Cost of Natural Gas for Boiler System (per year; assuming constant supply). This figure rises considerably if gas outages and HFO consumption are considered Indicative cost for deployment of Solar Water Heating System for heating 40,000 liters of water per day Operating Cost of Solar Water Heating System (due to the use of water pump) per day Operating Cost of Solar Water Heating System per Year Yearly Cost Saving Return on Investment 2800 kWh 5600 kWh 7400 Rs per day 2.6 Mil Rs.
6.4 Mil Rs. 40 Rs. 14400 Rs. 2.64 Mil 2.4 Years
For an HFO based system, the ROI comes down to less than 1 year of operation.
Tapping the Carbon Economy Other than the savings in energy cost, this solution is compliant with the Clean Development Mechanism employed by Kyoto Protocol. The carbon offset produced by this system can be converted in CERs (Carbon Emission Reduction units) and sold to large scale funding agencies and corporations in Europe or other developed regions. This project will yield its benefits for the years to come, but assuming Asian Development Banks guarantee of 10 years on clean energy projects, following are some indicative figures. CERs generated per day for Natural Gas (for 40,000 liter of water per day) CERs generated per year for Natural Gas (for 40,000 liter of water per day) Indicative Cost of one CER according to current rates Indicative Cost of 394 CERs in Euros (assuming 20 Euro) Indicative Cost of 394 CERs in Pak Rs. (exchange rate 1 Euro = 100 Rs) Indicative Cost of 394 CERs accumulated over 10 years For an HFO based system, the number of CERs is at least doubled. This shows that, if CDM is utilized, this solution will generate additional revenue, which is even greater than the capital investment on the project. 1.09 394 20-25 Euro 7880 Euro 788000 Rs. 7.8 Mil Rs.
