Page 2 of 14 Executive Overview - NEC Mobility Options Organizations are starting to realize the value of communications and business applications coming together to make users more productive and mobile. NECs Mobility Options perfectly exemplify this strategy. NECs Mobility Options combine the benefits of IP telephony with the superior quality and features Our solutions range from mobility for the office worker, mobile workers through the building to value-add solutions for teleworkers The benefits of mobility may vary depend on the where it is being used; i.e., cordless phone for the desk worker or a security guard roaming throughout the building These efforts focus on eliminating wasted time between events as they happen and the alert to opportunities or problems, removing delays in shaping proposals for the appropriate actions due to the lack of access to needed information, and compressing the time taken up by needed consultation among the decision makers to put the solution into effect. From these efforts, mobility offers the following benefits: Improve customer satisfaction - offering customers a quick, direct way to reach your employees without jumping through hoops improves customer satisfaction rates. Mobility solutions enable your company to deliver this level of service by providing workers a way to be reached even while they are away from their desks. Increase productivity - by giving your employees the ability to access communications features while away from their desks, you enable them to complete multiple tasks simultaneously. And because your employees can answer calls directly, reception workers and administrative assistants are free to complete other work. Reduce customer costs - because most calls can be answered immediately, callback charges are minimized. Additionally, no internal call costs are associated with Mobility solutions. These terminals provide the optimal approach for flexible businesses. A single converged network can be used to provide both fixed and wireless telephony and reduce dedicated cabling requirements. Move, add and change costs in addition to cabling expenditures are reduced.

The NEC Mobility Solutions are segmented into three main categories: 1. Mobile Solutions for office workers 2. Mobile Solutions In-building mobile workers 3. Mobile Solutions for teleworkers This white paper will discuss which NEC In-building Wireless Solutions is right for you; Assured Mobility (WiFi) or Business Mobility (IP DECT) It is clear that VoIP technology will replace traditional circuit-switched telephony in the enterprise. It is no longer a question of if this will happen but rather when will the enterprises migrate to IP-based telephony solutions. NEC offers both Assured Mobility and Business Mobility, delivering an IP wireless VoIP solution that requires minimal additional infrastructure and deliver powerful, reliable, and secure voice communications services that are responsive to the companies IT (information technology) needs. Your NEC representative can help you choose the right system for your inbuilding voice communications needs. Once a NEC Voice platform is selected, here are some of the criteria youll want to consider when considering which solution, Assured or Business Mobility is right for you; Assured Mobility Supports data and voice on one wireless network, options for 802.11abg Established protocols for roaming and handover. Security and QoS standards are effective and maturing Supports ~8 simultaneous calls per AP in an optimal environment Shorter standby/talk times depends on environment / 80 hours standby is optimal Requires careful planning to ensure effective data and voice coexistence on same access point Support of FMC Business Mobility Optimized for voice, with limited specific data apps. Dedicated frequency band at 1.9GHz with minimal interference Supports ~12 simultaneous calls per DAP Longer standby/talk times over 200 hours depending on handset Easy setup and maintenance, operates independent of existing WLAN network

The following pages will take you through a range of questions that are meant to assist in making the right decision when choosing between an Assured Mobility solution and a Business Mobility for a specific location.

Page 4 of 14 Technological and economical aspects, as well as functionality and vertical market issues are touched upon. Decisions on which in-building solution should be selected revolve around the following major factors: 1. Type of infrastructure customer is invested in (Assured or Business Mobility) and how those choices integrate to the various NEC voice servers 2. Type of handsets and features supported by the mobility solution selected 3. Applications and/or value-add provided by the various handsets 4. Vertical influence Technological and Economical Issues Infrastructure Decisions What is your current situation in regards to telephony? Are there any existing infrastructure? Which kind of NEC PBX do you have today? Will you be keeping the existing PBX or are you investing in upgrading to a newer one? The choice of PBX provides an idea of which choices are available in regards to wireless solution. What are your plans for future VoIP solutions? Has a technology decision already been made? What are your main reasons for implementing a wireless telephony solution? 1st decision- What Infrastructure? The 1st step will usually involve the IT department (and CIO) and decisions will be made based on whether to have the voice and data run on the same access point (802.11 mode) or have the voice run on separate radios (DAP in 1.9GHz spectrum) The following questions/guidelines may help in this respect: Q: Do you already have 802.11 mode access points? If the answer is yes, has their WLAN network been designed for voice and data traffic? A: If the WLAN is already setup for voice and data, then the obvious answer would be the NEC Assured Mobility products A: If there is an existing WLAN but it has not been setup of voice/data then the customer has a choice of Assured Mobility or Business Mobility Below is a brief synopsis of Assured Mobility and Business Mobility.

Page 5 of 14 Assured Mobility The implementation of wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) using IP-enabled wireless data handsets began from several years ago and was considered simple, inexpensive and a reliable method of delivering VoWLAN. The main attraction of a WiFi system is that it offers a single infrastructure for supporting wireless telephony and data, potentially providing a substantial return on investment by reducing hardware costs as well as longer-term operational, maintenance and support costs. But on the other hand, WLAN data applications are typically confined to the areas of a workplace where workstations and PCs are located, as well as meeting rooms and individual offices. WLAN generally does not extend to halls, staircases or outdoor areas. To upgrade a WLAN system to a full VoWLAN network it is necessary to increase the number of existing access points and this means additional cost, not only associated with the hardware itself, but with the high level of specialist expertise required for voice deployment, which demands careful channel allocation for each access point. Depending on the expertise of the end users this may be an issue and the benefits may over weigh the initial install costs. NEC has found that the HealthCare vertical has had great success in leveraging their WLAN to support multiple Mobility Solutions, including voice /data and RFID tagging Business Mobility Although the Assured Mobility and Business mobility use the same LAN to connect VoIP to the NEC voice server, Business mobility uses different radios. These are not 802.11 access points. What this implies is there will be separate radios through the building for this solution. So why would you prefer Business Mobility over Assured Mobility? Again it will depend on the environment and end user requirements and expertise. The Business Mobility solution has many inherent benefits. In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission in 2005 cleared the radio band (1920 MHz1930 MHz, or 1.9 GHz), known as Unlicensed Personal Communications Services (UPCS) These channels are reserved exclusively for voice communication applications and therefore are less likely to

Page 6 of 14 experience interference from other wireless devices such as baby monitors and wireless networks. By combining proven DECT technology in the 1.9 GHz radio spectrum, NEC offers an integrated IP peer-to-peer highly secure, high quality voice solution with seamless roaming throughout the building and up to 12 simultaneous calls per radio.

Since there are no security or interference issues, site deployments are greatly simplified and the level of expertise is not needed. In Summary Today, in the U.S., NEC offers two types of in-building mobility solutions: Assured Mobility VoWLAN and Business Mobility IP DECT. With IP DECT the customer deploys DECT radios (AP200S) which are dedicated to voice, therefore no other network traffic is contending for channel capability or bandwidth. With VoWLAN, voice co-exists with data communications on the same wireless LAN infrastructure. 2nd decision point - Which NEC Voice Server? The type of NEC PBX selected will have an impact on the selection and functionality of wireless handsets This section is primarily to understand system functionality and not the value-add of local features of the various handsets. In a later section there are comparisons and value-add positions of the various handsets. Assured Mobility There are multiple handsets included in the Assured Mobility solution.

Page 9 of 14 Call forwarding Message waiting for voice mail The Business Mobility handsets all have one line and offer either call waiting/or call forwarding options for calls when the person is on the phone However, depending on how the handset interacts with the different NEC PBX systems will influence what additional functionality the different handsets provide Additional feature sets are provided, depending on the NEC platform that is selected. Multiline functions including twin ringing vary depending on the NEC voice platform selected. Below are highlights of how each voice platform interacts for the business mobility solution SV8100 The Business Mobilitys AP200S equipment includes a SIP interface and can therefore be connected to SV8100. The Business Mobility solution supports those SIP RFCs that are required to support basic functionality to the mobile user (basic call, HOLD, toggle and transfer). Furthermore some of the dialed features of the SV8100 are available to the wireless handset users. The Business Mobilitys AP200S DAP has options that include an interface that supports IP PROTIMS (Dterm station protocol) and can therefore be connected to both the SV8300.and IPS The SV8300 and IPS With the PROTIMS option, the SV8300 is more robust and offers the following additional feature/functions. 1. Multiline appearance Multiline appearances are used so more than one Dterm/SP30 can share a number. This includes calls ringing on both devices and is often used in shared environments. 2. Twin ring

Page 10 of 14 Another outcome of multiple line appearances with the Business Mobility solution is that both the desk phone and the wireless IP phone can ring simultaneously, also called twin ringing. Once one person answered, the other phone would stop ringing. On the Dterm and/or SP30, (Soft Phone) if a line LED is provided, it would turn solid red And with Unified Messaging, the user can set up their voice mail system to provide one mail box for multiple phones. Please make sure to verify operation of the voice mail system for this feature, since each voice mail provider may have different options. 3. Remote Site Roaming Physically moving from one location to another and automatically connecting to the AP200S (and associated SV8300 or IPS system) extends a competitive advantage Without any human interaction, the user can move from site to site and once they connect to an AP200S, their handset is automatically connected to the SV8300 and ready for receiving or placing calls. The Business Mobilitys AP200S DAP has options that include an interface that supports IP PROTIMS (Dterm station protocol) and can therefore be connected to Enterprise platforms. The Enterprise platforms (SV8500/SV7000/IPX): 1. Multiple line appearances Multiline appearances are used so more than one Dterm/SP30 can share a number. This includes calls ringing on both devices and is often used in shared environments. The various Business Mobility wireless IP phones support one line. However, with multiline appearances, the wireless IP phone can receive incoming rings at the same time as the Dterm. So if a Dterm has lines 2000, 20001 and 2003, anyone calling those numbers can also receive calls on the wireless IP handsets With the implementation in the Enterprise platforms, the multiline appearance feature is extended so that if a call was answered on the wireless IP phone, that party can place the call on HOLD and the other person can answer the call. 2. Twin ring

Please make sure to verify operation of voice mail system, since each voice mail provider may have different options. 3. Remote Site Roaming Physically moving from one location to another and automatically connecting to the AP200S (and associated Enterprise platforms) extends a competitive advantage 4. FCCS Location Diversity The SV7000 offers the Location Diversity feature: When a fault has occurred to a specific SV7000 node within the enterprise network, terminals registered to this faulty node automatically re-register to another SV7000. After start-up of the AP200S system the wireless handsets will be registered to the primary SV7000, in case the communication fails then the handsets registers to a fall-back SV7000. When the primary Enterprise platform is operational again (indicated to the AP200S system by the fail-back system), the wireless handsets will go back to the primary system. Up to 10 Enterprise systems are supported. 3rd Decision Point The End User There seems to be multiple voices in the decision making process. Usually when talking to a major organization, like a HealthCare, the CIO invites multiple departments into the selling process. On one side he counts on the technical expertise of the IT/Telecommunications staff but he also is concern that the solution he recommends fits the needs of his end users. For example, the end users in the hospital may include doctors and nurses. Their main concerns may be as simple as how easy is it to take out the battery versus is it WLAN or IPDECT. Other questions are focused on user suability and battery life. People will not gain the benefits of mobility unless people accept and use it

Functionality Issues 1. Which job functions do the wireless users carry out? 2. Will specific handset functionality or features be valuable for them in doing their job? 3. Is there any specific application that needs to be taken into consideration? Both Assured Mobility and Business Mobility solutions provide a platform with which integration with third party application vendor programs is possible. Assured Mobility All MH100 series handsets support an OAI Gateway which allows middleware companies (such as Comtech or Emergin) to sent the handsets non-voice communication. This includes, but not limited to: short test messages and integration to nurse call systems and order management systems. This provides a value-add to these handsets. The MH200 series (both MH250 and MH240) only support IM between the handsets. There is a separate Excel spreadsheet that goes through a detailed comparison on the different Assured Mobility handsets, which emphasizes some of the key handset functionalities. Using the table will show you which Business Mobility or Assured Mobility Handsets provide the necessary functionality.
