SCHOOLS A-LEVELS: Students pass rate up to 100 per cent

STUDENTS and staff at Harlow College were over the moon on Thursday after achieving a record breaking set of A-level results.
An overall pass rate of 99 per was recorded, a whopping five per cent up on last year, and 17 subjects saw a pass rate of 100 per cent, again an improvement on 2009s results. Principal Colin Hindmarch said: This is one of the colleges most important days of the year; its a day when emotions run high and Im delighted to have seen so many

smiling faces. A-levels arent an easy option, the staff and students have worked extremely hard and these results are recognition of their hard work. This year also saw the introduction of the controversial A* grade and 15 of these were achieved by college students, 10 of whom were on the photography course. Photography lecturer Paul Jarvis said: Its not too bad really! Im very pleased, the students have worked hard and stayed focused for the whole year, keeping their eye on what they needed to do to obtain their A* grades. Theres been a great group atmosphere and they all inspired each other to do well. Top student at Harlow College was Alex Petrou (left) who recorded three A grades and an A*. He is now going on to study Civil Engineering at Bath University. He said: Im over the moon. I woke up at 6.30am this morning and checked the website so I knew my place was confirmed. The grades are everything I wanted and the best I could have hoped for. Its been a brilliant two years at Harlow College. Ive done much

better than I expected and its set me up for life. Jonathan Cooper recorded three A grades but was left uncertain of his future as he required A* AA to get into his first choice university, Cambridge. As the results were announced, he said: Im pleased with the results that I got but Im quite nervous as Ive now got to wait and see. Eda Celik, 18, from Harlow, also gained some fantastic results, recording two A grades and a B. Its what I was hoping for so Im pleased, she said. Im going on to study at Edinburgh because it looked good for English language. Other standout performances included Liam Cairns who achieved AAB, Robert Lutchford with AAB and Christopher Bulgen who recorded ABCC. MP Robert Halfon has extended his congratulations to the college for an excellent set of results. He said: Harlow College is going from strength to strength and rapidly becoming one of the best colleges in England. I am proud that Harlow has a college, which is not just a central community institution but also has such high academic standards. I congratulate the principal, Colin Hindmarch, his staff and the students for the work they have put in to make

the college the very best. Academic excellence is central. Harlow College is now a place where aspiration and high standards are paramount. UCAS had reported that 44 per cent of students nationally would not get into any university. At Harlow College only five per cent students have found themselves in this position and this may well reduce as universities make their final decisions. l STUDENTS from St Marks West Essex School and College also recorded some good results. A pass rate of 96 per cent was achieved, with 50 per cent of students gaining A* - C grades. Eighty-six per cent of students also achieved their first place university choice. Standout performances included Mysore Oyelade who recorded AAA and is going on to study Tourism management at the University of Lancaster. David Campbell gained

BBBC and is going on to study English at University of Hertfordshire. Lewis Ward scored a BBB and is going to University of East Anglia to study Chemistry. Headteacher David Brunwin said: We are pleased with this group as they have done pretty well; theyre a nice group and there werent too many tears this morning. Out of the 84 who applied, only four students are waiting to hear on university places. AS students recorded some even stronger results giving them an exceptional platform on which to build from next year.
