western mental health week targets stigma

Western aims for 10 per cent foreign enrolment by 2014

richard raycraft Gazette staff Western is making a large push towards internationalization in the coming years. The university hopes that by 2014, approximately 10 per cent of all Western students will have come from another country. The goal stems from the ambitions of Westerns incumbent president, Amit Chakma. The university recently opened a new office called Western International, the purpose of which is to effectively give Western added international prominence. Western International will assist with any matter related to international undergraduate recruitment, international learning, student support, or international relations. Westerns entire recruitment team has done an amazing job recruiting international students, Julie McMullin, special advisor to the provost, international, said. McMullin cited Westerns vast improvement in international recruiting over the last two years. In 2010, just three per cent of the incoming undergraduate students were international students. In this area, Western lagged far behind other Ontario universities. By 2011, this had more than doubled to nearly seven per cent. Approximately 22 per cent of graduate students at Western come from outside Canada. Patrick Searle, vice-president university affairs for the University Students Council, believes the focus on internationalization will help Westerns growing reputation. I think the reason the university is so focused on being international is so that the value of our degrees continues to grow, he commented. To be a world leader in education, you have to be known to the world. International focus also played a large role in the universitys rebranding campaign. One of the concerns was that the University of Western Ontario sounded very regional, Searle said. In terms of further international recruitment, McMullin is optimistic. Some of the things that make Western attractive to domestic students are also attractive to international students, she pointed out. What is great about the model we

taylor rodrigues Gazette staff Western students will forego their purple for green this Friday to show their support for mental health awareness week. The University Students Council is promoting mental health awareness March 19 to 23 in coordination with Student Health Services, residence staff, the faculty of health sciences and several student groups. [We] are supporting the student programs this week in an effort to show a united front to students in mental health awareness on campus, Marissa Joffre, vicepresident campus issues for the USC, said. The campaign will feature a mental health fair in the University Community Centre from Monday to Friday, as well as special events across campus. Julia Nantes, the mental health issues commissioner, said the campaign aims to get rid of the stigma associated with mental health disorders. She said they want to educate students about the psychological and health resources available to them on campus and in the London community. Nantes explained students ex-

perience a wide variety of mental health issues including depression, bipolar disorder and addictions. A large portion of the calls received by the Student Emergency Response Team are mental health related. However, many students do not wish to share these experiences due to the stigma associated with mental health issues, Nantes said. Joffre affirmed that greater mental health services are needed on campus. Mental health issues are rapidly increasing on campus and we are seeing a consistent need for student health and psychological servicesand these are just the students we know about. There are absolutely students who have not yet had the courage to ask for help or simply do not know how to access it. Mental health awareness week is an extension of the USCs Holding On To Hope campaign. The events partner with many other student groups including the club Active Minds, PrideWestern and the faculty of health sciences students council, Joffre said. [We want] to partner with the numerous service providers on campus to send the message to students that there is support to

be found throughout the Western community. Some of the campaigns highlights are a speaking event with Dan Savage, founder of the It Gets Better Project, the Stand Up for Mental Health comedy show and a lecture by author Margaret Trudeau. Savages presentation aims to address youth who are bullied because they are, or suspected of being, gay. His presentation on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Alumni Hall will communicate to youth that their lives will improve. Stand Up for Mental Health is a comedy show happening tonight at 8 p.m. in the Mustang Lounge. Comedians will fight the stigma against mental health issues by comically presenting their personal mental health experiences. Margaret Trudeau, wife of the late Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau, will discuss her struggle and recovery with bi-polarity March 29, at 5 p.m. in Alumni Hall. It is important to highlight [] that these are student-run events and programs. Those involved in this weeks events definitely deserve a lot of praise for coming together to fight something that affects so many of their peers, Joffre said.

Patrick searle,

use is that there is a lot of emphasis on Western student volunteers in our programming. Western students gain international learning through participating as volunteers and help to make Western a welcoming community. Recruiting students from outside Canada is not the only international priority, however. Increasingly, international exchanges for domestic students are also receiving attention. These exchange opportunities are becoming essential to providing students with a different perspective. Students describe study abroad and international learning experiences as rewarding and transformational, McMullin said. In a world where borders are more easily and necessarily traversed, providing students with opportunities to develop intercultural competencies becomes an important dimension of education, she said.

New hospital funding

A new funding model for hospitals was proposed by Ontario Health Minister Deb Matthews on Monday. Effective April 1, the Health Based Allocation Model will take factors such as quality of services and demographic information into consideration when determining hospitals budgets. As a result, funding for small towns and slowgrowing regions will be diverted to aging and fast-growing regions. The previous budgeting model gave hospitals fixed amounts of money, and the autonomy to decide how the money would be used. According to Raisa Deber, a professor in the department of health policy, management and evaluation at the University of Toronto, it gave hospitals incentives to be as cost effective as possible, but it also gave them the incentive to do less. But if hospitals were asked to allocate funds according to services used, Deber stated small communities will encounter some problems because they would be discouraged from funding services deemed essential but infrequently used. The HBAM is an effort to address the incentives issues. What they are trying to do is to balance the incentives so that hospitals are encouraged to be as effective as they can so that you encourage more effective care, she said. Anthony Poon

Bernie MacDonald, a former city councillor, has long lobbied for the establishment of a satellite police station in the Fleming neighbourhoodto no avail. Though Saturdays violence rekindled interest in the project, Joe Swan, Ward 3 councillor, dismissed the idea that increased police presence alone would curtail civil disobedience. Its not about the number or lo-

cation of police officers, its about giving them the power and authority to disperse crowds, he said. News of Saturdays riotthe largest in Londons historymade front-page news across the nation this past weekend. Now that the shockthough not the concern has largely dissipated, city council has been taking steps to prevent the incidents recurrence in the neighbourhood. According to Swan, city officials have been collecting information from both the police and Fanshawe College. Londons Town and Gown Committee will also be holding a special meeting to address the issues presented by Saturdays riot. [The satellite station] would just add cost when you need the power and authority of control. Youve got to define the situation and the problem correctly, otherwise youll spend a lot of money and nothing will happen, Swan said. To remedy the situation, Swan said Fanshawe should provide more on-campus housing for students, and more preventive enforcement measures should be undertaken. The bottom line, according to Swan, was safety. Lets focus on the incident and lets fix that, but lets [also] keep in mind that there are lots of good kids in London who are looking forward to a good education [...] and were glad to have them here. and hands-on experience with one. The gap makes it harder to connect theory with experiment, Battista said. DeskCAT was developed by Battista and Kevin Jordan from the London Health Sciences Centres London regional cancer program to bridge the gap between theory and hands-on experience. The mathematical theory is quite dry and students quickly lose interest. DeskCAT offers interactive experimental learning that complements the theory, Battista explained. With the DeskCAT, students can see first-hand how a CAT scanner works. Theres no threat of radiation to students, either. Instead of a living body and X-ray radiation, the DeskCAT uses a transparent model and visible light, so students can see what invisible X-rays act like in a real, full-size CAT scanner. Connor Hill

Cleaning westerns reputation

In response to the Fleming Drive riot that took place this past Saturday, some Westerners are trying to clean up students reputations. A group of students is organizing a mass garbage collecting event tonight on campus. Members of Connection, a group that meets regularly with chaplain Mike Wagenman, had already been organizing a campus clean-up before the riot, but decided to shift the focus of the event in light of the incident. Since January, we had planned to do a garbage clean-up around Western, and it just so happened to fall on this week, Kimberley Gauld, one of three students organizing the group, said. The group decided to involve other students at the university in hopes of sending the opposite message to the community that the St. Patricks Day debacle did. The group hopes to bring 1,000 students out to the event, in contrast to the 1,000 students involved in the riot. The [Fleming riot] gave kind of a bad rap to students in London, so we decided to expand our little group and see if other people wanted to get involved, to demonstrate that students do care, Savannah Saarloos, another organizer of the event, said. Students interested in cleaning up campus can meet on Concrete Beach at 6 p.m. Gloves and garbage bags will be provided. Jesse Tahirali

Two Western professors have created a clever new educational tool, the DeskCAT. [The new tool] can be easily carried into the classroom or laboratory and help explain the imaging principles of computed tomography, Jerry Battista, DeskCAT co-developer, explained. Computed tomography is more commonly known as CT scanning. An ordinary CT or CAT scanner is large enough to fill a room, making it impractical for teaching purposes. Currently, scanners are only available with permission from hospitals in non-clinical hours, and classes can still be stopped for emergencies, explained Battista, who is the chair of the department of medical biophysics at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. The frequent unavailability of CAT scanners can result in a large gap in time between lectures

ombudsmans report absolves council

Victoria marroccoli Gazette staff After five months of waiting, Ontario ombudsman Andr Marin has finished his report on a November meeting when the London city council decided to evict the Occupy movement from Victoria Park. Unlike most council meetings, the meeting was held behind closed doorsthe source of the complaint that spurred the report. The ombudsman represents Ontario citizens by addressing and investigating the complaints of constituents against their municipal governments. Linda Williams, media representative for the office of the ombudsman, justified the delay between the lodged complaints and the report as normal for an investigation depending on logistics, such as the availability of people to be interviewed and the time it takes to obtain evidence. The high public interest in the Occupy issue meant that it was not surprising that the closed meeting generated complaints, she said. According to Joni Baechler, city councillor for Ward 5, these complaints were about more than just the idea of private meetings. [The people are concerned] because they wanted council to be accountable in terms of who voted in which manner to evict the London occupiers, she said. Sandy White, city councillor for Ward 14, said the issue is sensitive because it was a limitation of the freedom of speech, and a closeddoor meeting would not receive this kind of attention if the Occupy movement were not involved. White explained the meeting was to receive legal advice on Occupy Londons status in the park. It was last-minute due to the need to receiving a timely report, she said. Dale Henderson, city councillor for Ward 14, explained it was a hasty decision. This was a city emergency where people were acting unruly, defying the bylaws of the city, and officials were concerned as to the extent of this issue, he said. White agreed private meetings should be used sparingly. Closed door should be used rarely and only for matters that are absolutely necessary and permitted by law all others must be open and transparent, she said. Once an issue is resolved, the information should become on public record. Henderson took a different stance than White and Baechler, saying it was undemocratic for the ombudsman to investigate a private meeting. As councillors, we have a privilege and rights of this

country that we can talk to our lawyer in private, whether corporate or personal. Councillors are not protected the way that MPs and MPPs are in Canada or provincially, Henderson said. He added he was worried about the reputation of councillors

Police seeking help from public in identifying rioters

alex Carmona neWs editor The London Police Service and Fanshawe College are utilizing all methods available to them to apprehend offenders who took part in last weekends riots on Fleming Drive. The notorious student enclave saw an outbreak of violence late Saturday night and early Sunday morning when an intoxicated crowd clashed with police and lit numerous street and vehicle fires, causing $100,000 in damage. The police have set up a hotline for anyone with relevant information519-660-5842 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). The public can also email tips to tips@ police.london.ca and information can also be sent anonymously to londoncrimestoppers.com. Fanshawe, too, has reached out to the community for assistance. Beginning today, we will have a secure email account where students can provide information and videos. I also understand that students themselves have created a Facebook page, among other things, Howard Rundle, president of Fanshawe, said in a press conference Monday. The police have also decided to scour social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, in an attempt to identify suspects. However, according to Sydney Usprich, a criminal law professor at Western, there are some legal pitfalls they must avoid in doing this. Any posts that [other] people make about alleged participants in the riot can be used as an investigative tool, she said. However, if the prosecution wants to enter that post as evidence in court to prove that [the person being singled out] was rioting, it would not be admissible. It would be classed as what the law calls hearsay. Contrary to what one might expect, any posts an individual makes regarding their own illegal actions can be used as a legal confession should the Crown press charges. If [someone] made a hypothetical post about his or her own involvement, rather than [someone else] posting about it, then their own statement would be admissible as evidenceits like a confession, Usprich explained. The prosecution would of course need evidence to prove that it was indeed that person who made the post, she noted. Chris Sherrin, a procedural law professor at Western, was not so sure. The ability to get a conviction based on social media evidence such as Facebook or Twitter alone may be up for question, he said. Defence council could argue that this is an exciting topic and that their client was simply boasting or trying to impress their friends or something like that. It would be up to the judge to decide whether or not to accept an argument like that, based on the merits of each individual case.

Spring fever
Spring has sprung, and were feeling hot, hot, hot. Were experiencing unprecedented temperatures for mid-March, and although many of us should be starting our end-of-year papers and projects, all we really want to do is be outside. So with our studies and the sunshine competing for our attention, what is the best way to not go insane? Studying outside is nice, but is often far less effective than studying in a library or locked away in a windowless room. One strategy might be to force yourself inside like a troll, ignoring the world outside of your dimly-lit cavern. This could be effective, but youve been doing this all winter. You could go study in a coffee shop, where you can experience the outside world without being completely distracted by the urge to just get out of your roomplus iced coffee is a refreshing change of pace. Or why not enjoy the warm weather during the day, and learn to study at night when the sun goes to bed? There are plenty of things you could do, but really, its just weather. As Canadians, we tend to get overexcited about the first sign of sun and warm temperatures. Its not even like we had a real winter. And if a little bit of sunshine completely derails your study train, then youve probably got bigger problems than the weather. Wed love to continue this editorial discussion, but its far too nice outside. Were off to go enjoy the sun. Have fun studying. The Gazette Editorial Board

Its okay to be a daydream believer

wrath of mcGrath
Kaitlyn mcGrath oPinions editor Hey, youquit daydreaming. Does this sound familiar? If you answered yes, then you may suffer from daydreaming. But dont consult a doctor, because youre perfectly fine. In fact, youre better than fineyoure intelligent and have a strong capacity for memory. According to a recent study published in the journal Psychological Science, a head stuck in the clouds is a sign of better memory retention, which subsequently is a sign of intelligence. Hear that, slackers in the back? All hope isnt lost. The study tested several volunteers and assessed their basic memory capacity while performing other tasks. The study concluded that as long as the task at hand is not overwhelmingly difficult, people who have additional memory can let their mind drift, while still completing the task. In other words, write down notes in class, daydream and get an A in classI foresee no problems with that situation. And doesnt this relieve so much pressure? Gone are the days when you thought your daydreaming habits were detrimental to your education. Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life andwait, youre daydreaming right now, arent you? Okay, Im being a tad bit facetious because, realistically, constantly daydreaming during your classes is probably not the best way to succeed, or even pass. But daydreaming is just a way for our minds to escape the endless stresses of our daily lives, and its not a crime to dabble in a little daydream once in a while. Ill admit my mind has wandered off during class from time to time. But it always meanders back, usually a little less stressed and a little more determined to focus. Its been said we spend one third of our waking lives daydreaming. For me, that means I am spending a lot of my life fantasizing about Ryan Gosling, but thats irrelevant. With so much time spent daydreaming, it would be a shame if it were merely unproductive. Well, guess what? Ive got even more good news. Apparently, daydreaming is also a way that we can solve complex problems. Areas of our brain, which were previously thought to be inactive during a daydream session, could actually be trying to come up with solutions to your daily conundrums. There are also apparently a lot of studies done on daydreams that I didnt know about until yesterday. But this theory is intriguing. I could potentially be figuring out all the complex issues in my life, while simultaneously avoiding thinking about said issues. Lets apply this to real lifeor at least let me tell you how it applies to my life, and then you can enthusiastically nod your head and say, That totally happens to me too! I consistently find my best thinking occurs when Im not actually thinking. My mind is at its happiest and becomes instantly flooded with ideas when I let it roam free. Though, as a disclaimer, I dont recommend devoting your entire mental capacity to fashioning far-off dreams during your final exams. But for those who have been chastised in the past for being an absentminded daydreamer, dont beat yourself up, because you might actually be accomplishing more than you think whats that Ryan Gosling? Why yes, of course Ill marry you. I thought youd never ask. Oh, sorry about thatI must have been daydreaming.

Re: Employers criticized over Facebook password requests (March 14, 2012) To the Editor: A rather interesting aspect the article did not mention about employers asking for Facebook passwords, is that it is completely against the terms and conditions of Facebook. It is clearly spelled out in the legal terms that all users must agree to in

order to sign up. Section 4.8 explicitly states, You will not share your password. Violations of the terms can result in Facebook completely terminating your account. Essentially employers are asking you to violate a legal contract so they can invade your privacy, which certainly places the company on very questionable ethical grounds. Jeff Genovy

Arts&Life
Nathan tebokkel Gazette staff This Saturday, March 24 at 7 p.m., the London Music Club will open its doors for the 3rd Annual Coffeehouse for Multiple Sclerosis, organized by third-year Western student Mark Henshaw and friends. The idea for the coffeehouse formed when Henshaw was invited to the Rona MS Bike Tour by a friend. I liked the idea. Ive always ran, and I always liked the idea of biking from city to city, says Henshaw. It was a fun event for a great cause. Thinking about his interests and the interests of his peers, Henshaw organized a coffeehouse in his hometown of London while studying in his first year at the University of Windsor. He wanted a fundraiser that would mirror his experience on the Bike Toura fun event for a great cause. His first year organizing the event was successful, and the speaker, a woman living with MS, motivated Henshaw, providing information and, more pivotally, inspiration. It was a sign of hope. She was willing to go out and try, knowing that her life was on the line, says Henshaw. She showed that it was a human thing, happening to people. It brought multiple sclerosis and its struggles to light. For Henshaw, the show is about bridging communities, drawing Western students from their bubble and into the city, uniting students and city-dwellers for a cause, and most importantly, connecting the MS community with society at large. The three bands performing this year are representative of London and sate a variety of musical appetites, from the folk and alternative sound of Sea and City to the energetic hip-hop of Fanshawebased Treetop Entertainment and the soulful pop of former Western student Tam Duong. Baked goods, made by Bike Tour volunteers, will be sold based on donations throughout the night. Henshaw encourages everyone to get involvedbut says there are less than 50 tickets left. As a student, its so easy to forget about whats going on outside your door, Henshaw says. Dont be afraid to try something. If you have an idea, talk about it. The event starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 24 at the London Music Hall, located at 470 Colbourne Street. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.

Uniting London communities for a cause

for teenagers, rewards win

Sumedha arya Gazette staff A study at Cornell University has shown that brains of adolescents have more active reward centres than those of adults. This has led to the conclusion that when engaging in reckless behaviour, teenagers might be overestimating rewards rather than underestimating risks. The reward circuitry in the brain is very complicated. Jody Culham, a psychology professor working at Westerns Brain and Mind Institute, says that some of the most well-known pleasure centres in the brain are the nucleus accumbens and the medial forebrain bundle. These structures are implicated in a lot of problems we have in modern society, such as drug abuse, Culham explains. The pleasure centres in our brain exist to reinforce things that are good for a species such as food, sex and goal-setting to achieve positive outcomes. However, modern society has hijacked the pleasure centres in our brain by making things that werent readily available in the past more common in dayto-day life. Its important to remember these structures sustained a different context when there wasnt a McDonalds on every street corner, when they didnt ask you to supersize all your food, and when designer drugs didnt exist, Culham explains. The challenge is that you still want the reward centres to be there when you do something goodits just about figuring out how to keep them from firing when you do something exhilarating that

of a boy and a good book that help her regain a sense of purpose. The Fault In Our Stars has very little faults itself, but it can at times seem repetitive. It is also questionable whether 16-year-olds such as Hazel can contemplate life on the poetic and philosophical levels that she does in the novel. Regardless, the further one gets into the novel the less it matters how realistic Hazel and the other young patients sound. Besides, discounting a young persons ability to create profound thoughts is somewhat defeatist, and this novel is anything but defeatist. There are many examples of what the novel does rightfor example, its refusal to be categorized. The Fault In Our Stars features the struggles of cancer patients and their families, but it refuses to be called a cancer story. At the same time, the novel is driven by young love but is far from conventions of the teen romance genre. Rather, it is an intelligent and surprisingly comedic approach to fundamental questions of art, life and death. The insights of a number of theorists, poets and philosophers are presented in a way that makes one stop and think. In this way, The Fault In Our Stars is perhaps most respectable because of its potent ability to change a readers perspective within the span of a few pages. Greens novel is one of the few stories that answers more questions than it asks. While this may at first sound like a mediocre evaluation, it is far from. Those whove read the book know this, and those who choose to read the story will hopefully agree. Kevin Hurren

might not be the best for you. However, finding this balance is not proving to be easy. Administering a drug to reduce pleasure derived from a reckless act might also reduce pleasure associated with doing something positively goaloriented. What does all of this have to do with adolescents? In some models, it seems that the adolescent brain reacts more to the anticipation of reward than the adult brain. In a lot of studies, it has been found that the teenage brain is wired up differently in terms of reward, Culham says. That explains a lot of the risk-taking and drug-abusing behaviours of teenagers.

Adolescents hyperactive anticipation of reward can be problematic because executive areas of the brain involved in inhibition and control, such as the prefrontal cortex, continue to develop until the early or mid-twenties. So you might have this combination in the teenage brain where something like unprotected sex or taking a drug seems more rewarding in anticipation, says Culham. Executive structures that inhibit those [anticipatory feelings of pleasure] and say Hey, maybe this isnt the best idea, there could be consequences might not be fully developed.

The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves. This line from Shakespeares tragedy Julius Caesar is the source from which John Green derived the title of his newest book. Known best for being one half of YouTubes VlogBrothers, Green continues to display his promise as an author with this, his fourth independent novel. The Fault In Our Stars is the story of a 16-year-old cancer patient, Hazel, who is forced to attend a youth support group. Once there, she discovers more than she could have ever hoped for. It becomes evident very early on in the novel that there is no fault in young Hazel, but rather the fault is in the fates, stars, or whatever cosmic forces that seem to be tearing her body apart. It is only the love

dietitians day promotes profession

Cheryl madliger arts & life editor How many times have you heard the hype that gluten-free is better or that theres a hot new superfood for you? Anne Zok, registered dietitian and nutrition manager at Western, says these nutrition myths are common. Our landscape is teeming with information that can simply be qualified as half-truths or outright fabrications, she says. Dietitians like herself are the best sources when it comes to nutrition. Today marks Dietitians of Canadas third anniversary of Dietitians Day, part of Nutrition Month. This years themeGet the real deal on your mealpromotes dietitians as the source of accurate information to help people live healthier. The aim of this years campaign is to bust myths and misconceptions around nutrition, Zok says, something dietitians are best suited for. [Dietitians] have strong scientific backgrounds in food and nutrition, as well as interpersonal and counselling skills. They apply their knowledge to practical situations, helping people make wise food choices that can improve their health, increase their longevity and enhance their enjoyment of life. At Western, nutrition month is busy. To mark Dietitians Day, students can get information and ask a registered dietitian questions at a booth in the University Community Centre. Other festivities include supermarket tours, in-residence cooking demonstrations, and a booth set up in the Recreation Centre. Zok also says students can contact her through hospitality services or can make an appointment with the University Students Council dietitians, services free of charge for those covered under the student health plan. When it comes to the myth around gluten, Zok has simple advice. Those who have celiac disease or a sensitivity or allergy to glutenthe protein found in grains like wheat, rye and barleyshould avoid it, but gluten shouldnt be the focus for everyone. Whether the grain you choose is gluten-free, like rice, millet or quinoa, or not, enjoying more whole grains is a healthy choice.

Brittany Zigmond contriButor Directed by: Phil Lord, Chris Miller Starring: Johah Hall, Channing Tatum

Phil Lord and Chris Miller, directors of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, developed a highly entertaining film full of fast paced action and comedy. Morton Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Greg Jenko (Channing Tatum), former classmates, are reunited during police training, and develop a friendship while helping each other improve their policing skills in 21 Jump Street. After losing their big break, the pair is reassigned to a specialty division on 21 Jump Street. Their goal is to re-enter a high school environment in order to gather information on the people dealing and supplying the students with a new

synthetic drug. On the first day of school, Jenko mixes up his identity with Schmidts, which results in the boys not only having different classes, but it changes their entire lives both in and out of the high school setting. Schmidt poses as Doug, and unlike his actual high school experience, gets in with the popular kids and soon befriends the dealer of the synthetic drug. Meanwhile Jenko, undercover as Dougs brother Brad, befriends the geeks he used to make fun of when he was in high school. Resentment arises when Jenko is forced to watch Schmidt lead the life that he once enjoyed. For being in the opposite role of his character in his breakout hit Superbad, Jonah Hill lives up to expectations as a comedic actor. For having little experience working comedies, Channing Tatum satisfies his role within this comedy as well.

The movie is effectively accompanied by flashbacks to the boys high school lives in order to parallel their current situations as repetitive of their former lives. A reoccurring theme that can be observed throughout the film is the struggle and joy between friends. The film has occasional scenes of irony with a twist or two, accompanied by laughter throughout. Action is never in short supply, and the plot is delightful due to its classic and continual humour, string of mystery and emotional betrayal, yet it remains fun for all. The plot is designed in such a way that it is far from predictable in not only its ending, but throughout its entirety. Overall, this film is successful in its telling of the story of two friends, who against all odds, fight not only for justice, but for their friendship.

Sports
ryan Stern sPorts editor The Mustangs womens curling team came out sliding, gliding and pounding the rock at this weekends Canadian Interuniversity Sport and Canadian Curling Association championship. The tournament was held at the Welland Curling Club from March 14 until the 18. Having taken home the silver medal in the Ontario University Athletics champioinships, the Mustangs were aiming for a strong performance at nationals but they met expectations due to the level of competition. Our goal heading to Welland after the success of the OUA championships, was to make the playoff round at the CIS/CCA shootout, Rory Munro, Mustangs coach, said of his teams attitude coming into the tournament. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, the level of play was just too high for them to finish near the top. After a first round victory over a strong University of Manitoba team, the Mustangs were riding high, but the worst was yet to come. We struggled a little bit with reading the ice and lost three close gamesthat hurt our record. In the two games we won, we played very well, but couldnt carry that success game to game, Mustangs curler Erin Daniel said. A heartbreaking, extra-end loss to Brock, followed by a crushing

loss at the hands of the University of Alberta was the straw that broke the camels back. The Mustangs would lose two of their next three games in heartbreaking fashion in the last end. The Mustangs did find solace with a last round win over the Memorial Seahawks. It was almost as if we peaked during the playoffs at OUAs and couldnt quite sustain the effort

through the week at CIS. Competing against teams at the national level was absolutely helpful for the program, as most of the team will be returning next year, Daniel said. Despite the Mustangs performance against the countrys top teams, they are optimistic about the future. With a strong OUA tournament and a taste of the talent

that the nations best has to offer, the Mustangs will certainly be ready for next year. The experience on the national stage is extremely valuable for our team. I definitely got a taste of what it takes be successful at the national level, and what our team needs to do in order to improve for upcoming years, Nicole Westlund, Mustangs curler, said.

The Mustangs will be returning a strong contingent of the team to make a run at next years national tournament. All five of the student-athletes representing Western have the potential to return to the team next season, so this years experience can only help them to achieve bigger things going forward, Munro said.
