Youre sitting behind the
wheel when you hear a familiar
buzz of a text message.
Maybe its a friend who wants
to go out tonight, or its your
parents wanting to know
where you are. It will only
take a minute to respond, so
you look down and the next
thing you know you are lling
out insurance claims because
of that oh-so important text
message.
Although texting while
driving can be very dangerous,
according to Students Against
Destructive Decisions, 37% of
teens text while driving. I can
text without looking, states
Karina Smestad, a sophomore
at MHS when explaining why
it is not a problem for her.
Distractions from cell
phones extend a drivers
reaction time as much as
having a blood alcohol
concentration at the legal limit
of 0.08% according to the
University of Utah.
Ive been in a car when
people text and drive and their
driving ability is much worse
than when they actually pay
attention, Michelle Haack, a
sophomore at MHS, explains.
There are benets of having
a cell phone with you in the car.
When in an accident, drivers
can make more emergency calls.
However, using the cell phone
while driving can cause an
accident itself.
The damages can be a lot
bigger from texting while
driving than most drivers think.
When you get in a crash, most
insurance companies will look at
your cell phone records to see if
it was in use. If it was, then they
can refuse to pay.
Clemson University set up
a simulated driving study to
test a drivers ability to drive
on a curvy road and operate an
electronic device. Students were
asked to text, talk on the phone,
and operate an iPod. The study
found that these distractions
caused drivers to leave the lanes
10% more times than if they
were not operating one of these
devises.
Kylie Weirick, a sophomore
at MHS, states,I would
probably hit something because I
cant even text and walk, when
explaining why she doesnt text
and drive.
Currently, 19 states have a
ban on some type of cell phone
use. In New Mexico, it is illegal
to talk on the phone but you
are still allowed to text while
driving. Many people are trying
to change this law by banning
texting and the use of iPods.
The next time you are sitting
behind the wheel and you
hear the familiar buzz of your
cell phone, think twice before
picking it up.

Did you ever think that the
newspaper you are reading will someday
be an historical artifact? The primary
goal of the newspaper is to inform the
public. However, articles in our paper
are the stories behind yearbook pictures
and record our school history.
1959 was when the rst Manzano
newspaper came out. The newspaper,
now known as the Paw Print, used to
be called the Royal Monarch. Our paper
has changed over the years, some big
changes you can see are the students
in the pictures. The oldest paper we
have in the newspaper morgue is 1962
volume 3.
In the early years of the paper
you will nd girls wearing curled out
hairdoos, the boys basketball wearing
short shorts, even ads for McDonalds
that say, One double cheeseburger with
fries and a coke for 77 cents! That now
costs ve dollars, sometimes even more
Our school has had amazing young
journalists through the years. Most
people dont know the hard work a
newspaper student must do. We have to
decide what articles we want to write,
whats news worthy, who we want to
interview, whose picture we want in it,
then edit everything, set up the paper,
order it, and distribute it to the school.
Students have been accomplishing this
once a month for 50 years now.
Being a newspaper student can be
so much fun but also can be stressful.
I like being involved in the school
because you know whats happening,
stated Lindley Gallegos, MHS
sophomore and Paw Print writer.
Its amazing we still have the old
newspapers because we can look back
at strategies that were used, and observe
what we need to do to keep improving.
Although newspapers have been
here for a long time theyre becoming
extinct. Less and less people read the
newspaper. Almost everyone now just
watches TV for news or goes on the
Internet. Nobody can predict how long
the national newspapers will exist or even
how long the Paw Print will be informing
students at Manzano.
Most newspapers now have their own
websites you can go to.
Sadly, it looks like the future for the
newspaper is bleak. Until that day comes,
the Paw Print will be here, giving you the
stories that capture our high school years.
Valedictorian comes from the
Latin term vale dicere, or to say
farewell. Seniors are thinking about
many things these last few months
of their high school careers. Who
will be chosen as the class of 2010
valedictorian is denetly one of
them.
The valedictorian is the student
with the highest grade point average
in the senior class. We have a lot
of very smart seniors this year at
Manzano, but only the one with the
highest GPA will win the title.
There will also be students who
potentially could have been the
student with the highest GPA and
will be honored with being the
salutatorian.
There could be one
valedictorian, or there could be
multiple. There could be one
salutatorian, or multiple, stated
Jackie Geerts, the MHS Registrar.
There is a rst place and second
place; the only way two seniors
could both hold the title is if they
have the exact same GPA as each
other.
These students have been in
honors and AP classes throughout high
school. In these classes their teachers
expect more out of them and push
them further and harder.
Brett Robertson, a senior in the
race, explains, I have gone above
and beyond what all my teachers have
expected me to do. I have tried to
master the subject, not just get an A.
The valedictorian will give the
valedictory speech as a farewell to his
or her peers, teachers and school.
The primary aim of the valedictory
speech is to give a representative of
the graduating class a farewell to
the students and to the school, as the
graduates arrange to disperse and to
begin the next phase of their lives.
Becoming the valedictorian
is an academic honor for
hardworking seniors, Robertson
commented. It would make me fe

a lot like acting, except you dont
have to follow a strict script. You
can toy with things like blocking

Debate can be two-person (public
forum) or one-person (Lincoln-
Douglass).
Popularity all really depends
on the person, and from place to
place. Naturally, people tend to be
drawn to what they understand.
If youre in Debate, youre going
to want to watch a good debate,
said John Moorhouse, a junior
at Manzano. When one wants to
steer away from what he or she is
comfortable with, it is said that HI
and DI are more likable because
they are more theatrical. Debate is
also popular. Depending on the
skill of the debaters, debate can
actually be really fun to watch. If it
gets intense, like some can, it kinda
consumes you. Im on the edge of
my seat, watching some of these
arguments, says Payne.

enthusiasm and love for what they

Theres more to it than just
talking and arguing. Its an art,
its a hobby, its a lifestyle.
Speech and Debate is a group
of enthusiastic, passionate,
well-informed men and women
who are masters of the art of
communication.
Long story short, Speech
and Debate is a collection of
performance events that involve
public speaking, said Destry
Ullrich, a Manzano alumni and
former member of Manzano
S&D. [but] once youre
there, thats what its about,
Ullrich adds with a smug look.
The rules are based on the type
of event. There are different
branches of Speech and Debate.
Speech involves public
speaking and its subcategories
are original oratory, poetry/
prose, and performance, mainly
Humorous Interpretation (HI)
and Dramatic Interpretation
(DI) and these can be single or
double. Tyler Payne, a junior
at Manzano, specializes in
Interpretation (a ten-minute,
one- to two-person performance
based on published works). Its
groans Moorhouse, but once
you get into it, its a lot of fun.
Tournaments are fun too, adds
Ullrich.
Speech and Debate isnt
just about the performing and
the tournaments and the prizes
and trophies. Its about learning
something new, and learning
something about yourself. [I
learned] how to speak publicly. I
had the biggest stage fright you
could ever imagine until I really
started participating in S&D.
My condence has sky-rocketed
because of it, says Payne. It can
really show.
Speech and Debate members
meet every Wednesday from
after school until 3:30 p.m. and
Fridays from after school until
whenever. They are always
looking for new members to add
to their team, so if you Monarchs
are interested in something
meaningful and fun, join Speech
and Debate.

Although recycling has gained
popularity and saved lots of
resources already, we still need to
do a better job. Recycling is going
to be more and more important as
we use more resources. Around
the world, people recycle to try
and help our struggling planet.
Manzano High School has
recently joined the worldwide
effort.
Its important to reuse and
conserve as much of our planet
as we can, said MHS teacher
Matt Kraus. Kraus previously
worked at Los Lunas High School
and was inspired by its recycling
program, and when he got to
Manzano he felt it was important
to incorporate it here.
Kraus tried to get recycling
going through his homeroom
class, but his efforts never took
off until he asked some of the
other teachers for help. Special
Education teacher Steve Ortega
stepped up and his class has been
taking collections ever since.
Ortegas class has brought
recycling to Manzano. They
started the recycling program
here about a year ago and some
teachers are still unaware.
The majority (of teachers) do
(recycle). Some teachers recycle
more than others, but I encourage
all to do it, stated Ortega.
Ortega asks that Manzano
teachers have a designated
recycling destination in their
classrooms. He also would like
the teachers to know they can do
special pick-ups if you call him
at extension 2266 or email him at
Ortega_st@aps.edu.
Ortegas class, along with
Yvonne Reneaus class, work
together to collect recyclables
most Tuesdays after lunch. Jesse
Cruz, a student of Mr. Ortega,
explained, It makes you learn and
teaches you what to do when you get a
job, and It makes me feel like Im part
of something.
This is a great way for these students
to get involved with Manzano. My kids
enjoy recycling. They take a great deal of
ownership in being a part of Manzano,
stated Ortega.
Our community and many students
and teachers at Manzano are also very
concerned about the well-being of our
planet. Its important that people do their
part in the world, said sophomore David
Green.
Each of us uses approximately one
100-foot-tall Douglas r tree in paper
and wood products per year. Also, more
than 56 percent of the paper consumed in
the U.S. during 2007 was reused thanks
to recycling efforts, which was an all-
time high. That 56 percent equals 360
pounds of paper for every man, woman,
and child in America. So the next time
you pass a note to your friend in class,
instead of back boarding it off the wall
into the trash can, why not slamdunk it
into the recycling bin? Its just as easy
and you will be helping our effort towards
rebuilding our planet.

Did you ever think that you would
ever meet someone who was there when
you were born? Thats what happened to
18-year-old MHS senior Anthony Lope.
We all know Patty Fitzwater, a math
teacher here at Manzano, but Anthony
met her 18 years ago.
When Anthonys father was sent to
Iraq in Desert Storm, Fitzwater stepped
up as Phyllis Lopes, Anthonys mom,
birth coach.
I remember feeling compassion
because her husband was at war, said
Fitzwater on how she felt about Lopes
pregnancy. Phyllis and Fitzwater both
shared a bond because both of their
husbands were Marine Reservists.
Phyllis and Fitzwater met through
Thomas, Fitzwaters oldest son, and
Brandon, Anthonys older brother.
Brandon and Thomas became friends
in kindergarten. Meanwhile Phyllis was
pregnant with her third child, Anthony.
Fitzwater knew what she was going
through because she just had her third
child, Steven. Since Fitzwater had just
had her baby she had an idea of what
everything was going to be like and could
relate.
I was up all night because you know
the timing, explained Fitzwater on how
the baby could come at any time. Phyllis
and Fitzwater were up for hours until
11:19 a.m. when Anthony was born.
His mom didnt scream, she was
a trooper, said Fitzwater. She even
remembered that Anthonys name would
have been Tiffany if he was a girl.
A few months after Anthonys birth,
Fitzwaters husband was sent to Japan.
All of the Fitzwaters moved to Japan and
she lost contact with Phyllis.

My brother told me they recorded
it , and I remember seeing it once
explained Anthony about his own
birth.
Fast-forward 16 years and Fitzwater
is teaching at Manzano. A couple of
days before school started she checked
her roster for familiar names. When
she saw Anthony Lope she couldnt
believe it.
When she rst saw Anthony she
asked him if his moms name was
Phyllis. When he said yes she started
to tear up.
It was surprising and
unexpected! said Anthony about
meeting Fitzwater. What are the odds
of this being the same kid, joked
Fitzwater, showing her inner math
teacher.
Since that 2007-2008 school year,
Anthony has become a senior and
he and Fitzwater still keep in touch.
Fitzwater has also seen Phyllis since
then.
Every once in awhile Ill see her
at a store, explained Fitzwater about
seeing Phyllis every now and then.
I am just so thrilled he grew up to
be a nice young man, said Fitzwater
on how proud she is of Anthony.
Anthony has loved skateboarding
since he was a little kid. He used to be
sponsored by Red Bull. He won an all
expenses paid trip to California for a
skate competition.
After so many years Manzano has
helped to bring together a great teacher
and a great student. Their reunion
shows just how small our world really
is.
