Newsletter
From the Managing Directors Desk......
Happy New Year! Welcome back to another year at Macaulay Metals. I hope you and your families had a wonderful Christmas and managed to enjoy the holiday period. 2012 promises to be an exciting year. The year started out with a decent warm up exercise! We completed loading a full ship of steel scrap from Marsden Point and our Wellington Yard. In the process we actually totally emptied out the Wellington Yard. It has been a very long time since we have seen an empty yard in Wellington. A few photos below showing one of the hatches on the ship and the Wellington Yard nearly empty! Issue 9, March 2012

I would like to welcome our new staff members including our new Chief Operating Officer, Marty Roelofs. With both Marty and the new Board of Directors we can look forward to many improvements within our business this year. I am confident that we will achieve happier, more motivated teams and hence happier and more satisfied scrap suppliers and buyers. We also have several new and exciting pieces of equipment about to arrive in the Wellington yard. A Freightliner hook truck and a Sennebogan Material Handler. These will arrive over the next few weeks and are certainly very impressive pieces of gear. We will put some photos up on the Macaulay Metals Facebook page when they arrive. In early February we opened our new yard in Gisborne. Alan Foote has moved from the Whakatane yard to be the Gisborne Yard Manager. A massive effort went into opening the Gisborne Yard and I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who made this possible. Over the next few weeks we will be starting a marketing campaign in the Gisborne area. I am really looking forward to working will you all again this year. ~Jeff

Chief Operating Officer for Macaulay Metals

Last year we identified areas where we needed assistance and help in running, growing and further developing the Macaulay Metals business. As you all know we appointed a board of directors towards the end of last year to help us with direction, strategy and governance. The other area was Operations, so to tackle this challenge our Chief Operating Officer was appointed. This role assumes the overall responsibility for the direction, management and leadership of all the operational aspects of our business. Marty Roelofs took over this role in the middle of January 2012 and has been learning the ropes, visiting the yards and getting to know how our business ticks for the last few months. Marty has a varied background originating in the army, qualifying as a Trade Certified mechanic, then spanning through managerial and leadership roles in different organisations. His most recent role prior to Macaulay Metals was at Vehicle Testing New Zealand where he was the Wellington Area Manager. His role spanned the central part of New Zealand. Marty has visited all of the yards in his first month and you will no doubt see more of him over the months to come!

New Sennebogen!
A recent arrival in the Wellington yard was a new Sennebogan material handler. Turning up on a rainy day didnt deter everyone from going out to have a good look and take some pics!

Focus on a Non-Metal Supplier

Many of you have either visited our office for a pre-employment or annual health check, or seen our nurse at your work site for an annual check. Some of you may wonder what we do once the assessments have been completed and you return to work. OK Health Services are a nationwide occupational health company based in Wellington and we specialise in helping companies, such as Macaulay Metals, to keep employees healthy and safe in the workplace. Employers have obligations under the Health and Safety in Employment Act to insure that they do not harm employees and this provides the minimum requirements of what we include in assessments. Many companies, such as Macaulay Metals, do more than the minimum and enable us to help you stay fit, well, and safe.

Being in the scrap metal business, hazard management is a major part of Macaulay Metals health and safety plan. We support Macaulay Metals by providing health monitoring for those hazards which may impact on an employees health. Therefore we conduct annual tests and compare these results to your baseline (the results from your pre-employment) or to national standards. The results of the assessments indicate whether or not the hazard management plans in place are working. If they are, which is usually the case for most of our clients, its reaffirming. However, when they arent working we provide support to our customers to help improve their hazard management. While Macaulay Metals need to meet their obligations under the HSE Act, we also have to meet certain obligations including managing your medical records properly. Your complete medical records are kept secure at our site and we have strict guidelines about what information we can report to employers. Employees however can have copies of any of the assessments we have completed and we regularly provide copies or if you prefer, we send them directly to your GP if there is ever anything for you to personally follow up on e.g. hearing loss or lung function assessments. If you have any questions about the service we provide, please dont hesitate to contact us or for those of you in Petone, drop in and see us at our clinic, 0800 OK HEALTH.

Macaulay Metals health checks are beginning shortly, your Manager will let you know your date and time.
