EJEMPLO: ** Este ejemplo no incluye punto no. 1 y est en ingles ** COMMITTEE: World Health Organization COUNTRY: Egypt DELEGATE NAME: Edgar Gerardo Navarro Crdenas TOPIC A: Suicide Prevention Suicide is a complex phenomenon that has attracted the attention of philosophers, theologians, physicians, sociologists and artists over the centuries. As a serious public health problem it demands our attention, but its prevention and control, unfortunately, are no easy task. According to WHO estimates, in the year 2004, approximately one million people died from suicide, and 10 to 20 times more people attempted suicide worldwide. This represents one death every 40 seconds and one attempt every 3 seconds, on average. This also indicates that more people are dying from suicide than in all of the several armed conflicts around the world and, in many places, about the same or more than those dying from traffic accidents. In Egypt and almost all the countries, suicide is now one of the three leading causes of death; until recently, suicide was predominating among the elderly, but now suicide predominates in younger people in both. Suicidal behavior has numerous and complex causes. The biology of the brain, genetics, psychological traits, and social forces all can contribute to suicide. Although people commonly attribute suicide to external circumstances, as lost of a job or divorce, but most experts believe these events are triggers rather than causes in themselves. My country National Research Centre (NCR) found that mostly of the basic factors which causes suicide is linked to depression. Because depression precedes most suicides then, early recognition of depression and treatment through medication and psychotherapy are important ways of preventing suicide. In general, suicide prevention efforts aim to identify people with the highest risk of suicide and to intervene before these individuals become suicidal. Therefore there is compelling evidence indicating that adequate prevention and treatment of depression, alcohol and substance abuse can reduce suicide rates; Concerned about this important situation the Egyptian government its working hard on national campaigns, for example we are increasing the number of schools which have suicide-prevention programs that train students, teachers, and school staff to recognize warning signs and tell them where to refer students at risk of suicide were is the most vulnerable population. Although the governments of Egypt propose serious objectives in addition of future middle plans: To reduce mortality and morbidity due to suicidal behavior To break the taboos surrounding suicide To bring together national authorities and public overcome challenges
