Celebrate the full moon with enchanting twilight hikes on majestic Glen Deven Ranch and historic Marks Ranch. Bring your dinner! Dress warmly, wear appropriate hiking footwear and bring something to sit on that you can carry with you. All day hikers meet with volunteer hike leaders at 8:45 a.m. at The Big Sur Land Trust office at 126 Clock Tower Place, Suite 101, Carmel. Please dress appropriately for hiking and weather conditions. Be sure to bring ample water and a bag lunch or snacks. Hikes cancelled in the event of severe rain and/or weather. SPRING WILDFLOWER WALK

PROGRAM

Join us for these new, specially designed educational outings! Dress appropriately and bring plenty of water and lunch and/or snacks. All outings are half-day excursions except for Arroyo Seco which will be a full-day. AUGUST 2
RIPARIAN ECOLOGY AND WORK ON THE LAND DAY

MARKS RANCH In the springtime Marks Ranch is ablaze in color. Join wildflower expert and devoted hike leader Gordon Williams on this moderately strenuous hike and learn all there is to know about the native beauties that dot this landscape in the heart of Steinbeck country.

GLEN DEVEN RANCH Take part in a large scale habitat restoration effort on one of Big Surs most beloved ranches. Join a work party to remove invasive species that threaten the Garrapata Creek watershed. Enjoy an energizing and educational hike along the ranchs pastoral ridge and through fertile but delicate riparian habitat.

Explore the beautiful open grasslands, blue oak and sycamore habitats of this 1,674-acre ranch. Take a dip in the Arroyo Seco River, one of the most pristine freeflowing rivers in the Salinas River system. Be prepared for a 4 mile strenuous hike with an elevation gain of 1,000 feet. Trek through dry and rocky terrain with steep ascents and descents. Plan for an all-day excursion; ample food, water and sun screen a must!

Enjoy the picturesque wildflower meadows, gently rolling hills, native grasslands and expansive oak woodlands of this 816-acre ranch located along Highway 68 southwest of Salinas. Be prepared for a moderately strenuous 6 mile hike with an elevation gain of 800 feet. Plan for a 5 hour excursion during which you will also discover a 1920s Mexican style hacienda and learn about the Marks Family legacy.
PALO CORONA RANCH

This hike includes two distinct Big Sur experiences. Enjoy a moderate 2.5 mile walk (round trip) atop Garrapata ridge featuring breathtaking Pacific coastal vistas. After a break for lunch take a strenuous 4 mile hike, descending 1,100 feet to the redwood-lined Garrapata Creek and then loop back up to the ridge. Plan for a 3 to 6 hour excursion depending on whether you chose one or both of these hikes.
POINT LOBOS RANCH

Explore the northern portion of this 10,000-acre ranch. Trek through idyllic pastoral grasslands and beautiful stands of oak as you ascend to Inspiration Point and its sweeping views of historic Odello Fields, the Carmel River Mouth and the ocean beyond. Plan for a strenuous 4.5 mile hike (about 4 hours) with an elevation gain of 1,000 feet.

This easy two-hour, 2.5 mile walk straddles the serene San Jose Creek. Follow the creek through a deep canyon where pink rhododendrons bloom in the deep shade of the redwood forest.

This outing includes two hike options to explore this magical 1,100-acre redwood preserve. Take a moderately strenuous 3.5 mile hike with an elevation gain of 1,000 feet. Trek through an old growth redwood forest and enjoy panoramic vistas of coastal grasslands. Or take a strenuous 5 mile hike with an elevation gain of 1,900 feet that includes ancient stands of oak and magnificent groves of madrone. Plan for a 5 to 6 hour excursion and bring plenty of water.

DUNES ECOLOGY AND WORK ON THE LAND DAY

PALO CORONA RANCH Enjoy a family day of fresh air and sunshine on an energizing walk amidst dramatic grasslands. Tour historic Odello Fields with Jamie Collins of Serendipity Farms and learn about organic farming and Community Supported Agriculture. Be inspired by a local fitness and nutrition expert who will provide pointers on wellness, proper nutrition and the health benefits of hiking on the land.

MARTIN DUNES Take part in a large scale habitat restoration effort on one of Californias most ancient and in-tact dune ecosystems. Take an inspiring walk through this sand landscape as you learn from experts about the dunes unique assemblage of plants and animals. Join a work party to remove invasive species that threaten this fragile environment.

REDWOOD FOREST ECOLOGY AND WORK ON THE LAND DAY

OCTOBER 24
FIRE ECOLOGY AND WORK ON THE LAND DAY

ARROYO SECO RANCH Join BSLT Conservation Project Manager Cameron Chabre for a day of exploration and education about fire ecology and land management and the effects of the summer 2008 Indians Fire on the landscape. Enjoy a hike and learn about land management research needs and techniques.

MITTELDORF PRESERVE Come marvel at the largest redwood in Monterey County and learn from experts about the life history of these magnificent trees and the threats to their survival. Join a work party to help clear and restore the preserves most popular trails. Enjoy a guided hike or a leisurely nature trail walk.

JUNE 28
ARTISTS ON THE LAND DAY

GLEN DEVEN RANCH Join us for a spiritual and physical journey, walking through the sculptural landscapes of Big Sur as working artists tell their story of the land on canvas. Witness artistic creations through the eyes of some of Big Surs most well known artists and experience their unique connection to the land.
