Lesson Plan 1

III. Objectives (Refer to Blooms Taxonomy):

Students will practice reading silently for a sustained period of time. Students will create their own KWL chart and determine what they know and what they would like to know about heros journey. Students will discuss and make prediction about what will happen in Le Morte dArthur

IV. TEKS : (B) analyze textual context (within a sentence and in larger sections of text) to draw conclusions about the nuance in word meanings (B) analyze the moral dilemmas and quandaries presented in works of fiction as revealed by the underlying motivations and behaviors of the characters; V. Introduction/Opening Activity/Anticipatory Set:

SSR (20 minutes): Students will enter the classroom and sit down in their assigned seats. They will instinctually take out their SSR books, as SSR is a part of their daily routine. I will walk around and make sure that every student has his/her book. If a student does not have a book I will write his/her name down on a loose leaf piece of paper and deduct points from his/her SSR participation grade. Ten points (a letter grade) will be deducted from their weekly 100 points earned for bringing a book and reading daily. If a student does not have a book, he/she will borrow a book from the bookshelf to silently read for that day.

Lesson Plan 2

TRANSITION: I will tell students that in addition to reading Frankenstein, they will be reading Le Morte dArthur. I will remind them that we worked on character archetypes in order to help them prepare for the reading.

VI. Activities (plan for learning sequence; align with objectives; may include time on task): Introduction to Heros Journey (30 minutes):

o First, I will have students make their own KWL charts. o I will project a piece of paper using the Ladybug and demonstrate how to create a KWL chart. o I will explain that under K students will know what they know about the Heros Journey. o I will explain what under W they will write what they would like to know about the Heros Journey. o Finally I will explain that next week in class they will write what they have learned about the Heros Journey. o Once they have filled out their charts, I will have them share what they wrote on their charts. o After they share, students will watch a video clip with examples of various characters in film going through the heros journey. o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGV1BvnyvGo

TRANSITION: I will explain to students, that as we read the Le Morte dAthur, that they will be keeping track of Heros journey. Tracking the Heros Journey in Le Morthe d Arthur (35-40 minutes)

o Before we begin reading book one, I will ask students if the know (or can predict) who the hero is in the story. Answer: Arthur o I will ask the students to predict how his journey will begin. Answer(s): may vary, but the logical response would be that he would start from humble beginnings. o I will have the students read the story aloud (book one, chapter one), stopping to review what is happing and to define words; wroth, privy, postern, siege and ado. Lesson Plan 3

o I will ask students who they think Igrayne is. I will tell them that she is Arthurs mother. o I will also ask them why Mallory is starting off by telling us the story of Arthurs mother if the story is about Arthur. I anticipate the students will respond by saying that the author is giving us background information on Arthur. o I will explain to the students that events that occur before Arthurs death are important because he believes he is born to humble beginnings when in actuality he was born of noble blood by strange circumstances. o I will then ask students what they think will happen in chapter two: Answers will vary. TRANSITION: VII. Closure (2-5 minutes): o I will then ask students what they think will happen in chapter two: Answers will vary. VIII. Homework assigned (1-2 minutes):

o Students will read chapter two of book one and fill out their worksheets

IX. Evaluation (align with objectives and activities):

o Questions and discussion about heros journey as we read chapter one, book one in Le Morte dArthur o Heros Journey KWL handout
