Evaluation of Practical Production: Promotion of Music

You should aim to write 700-800 words (this is a strict word limit so write concisely) Ways of keeping the word count down could include: bullet points, images, screen shots from your finished music video, annotations of screen shots etc think back to techniques you used effectively in your gorilla analysis last year You must complete this individually Your writing should reflect upon each question in bold under the 6 sub-headings. Prompts to help you answer these are given, but add extra detail you feel is appropriate Be analytical rather than descriptive Make reference to the 4 key concepts (Institution; Media Language; Representation; Audience) linking your justifications to the conventions of existing music videos

Aims of Production How have the aims of the production been met? - What is the main purpose of a music video? Refer to some successful examples and how they achieve this purpose. - Explain which song you chose to use for your music video and why. (Avoid phrases like: we wanted to do X but were told we had to choose a song that didnt already have a video)

Media Language How has your music video applied appropriate codes and conventions and used appropriate media language (e.g. shot types, camera angles, editing transitions)? - Summarise the conventions of narrative music videos - What typical features do music videos for your chosen artist include? Did you decide to conform to or subvert these in your video? - What mise-en-scene did you choose and why? Consider locations, props, costumes, iconography - How did you use the camera to help reflect the narrative? Consider the effect of specific shots, angles and movements. - How did you add meaning or interpretation through editing transitions

and effects? Refer to specific examples

Representation How has your product represented people, places or events? - What themes, messages or attitudes underlie your chosen song? - What image does the band or artist of the song portray? Did you decide to go along with this established image in your video, or subvert it? How? Why? Consider facial expressions, gestures, clothing, props, interactions etc. - What messages did you offer about any social groups e.g. teenagers, women, working class and why?

Exhibition Where and when would your product be shown?

- Which music video channel(s) would be most appropriate to your video and why? Refer to specific segments and times within the channel, and what can currently be seen there

Regulations What regulations and controls might be applied to the product and how have these been taken into consideration?

Audience What are the strengths and weaknesses of the product in terms of meeting the needs of its audience? - Who is the target audience for your music video? Be specific. - How did you go about targeting them? - How successful do you feel your finished music video is? How appropriate for purpose and audience? - What needs have been met? Refer to the uses and gratifications theory.
