Muralist, artist, political leader

I meet Jos Hernndez Delgadillo when I was going to publish the magazine "Nueva Generacin", in 1972. He is the most political and commited artist I have known. A honest man, a skilled master of drawing and an impressive muralist. This bio was published in English by "The Biographical Bulletin", in Canada, 1991.

GENERAL INFORMATION (as published in 1991) Place of birth: Mxico, in Tepeapulco, Hidalgo on January 7, 1928. Married to: Beatriz Zamora, a Mexican artist.

1945.- Began his studies in painting in the studio of the Master Antonio Navarrete Tejada. 1954.- Made his first individual show Exposicin in the Lpez Gallery on Isabel La Catlica Street, in Mexico City. 1958.- Began his studies in art at the National School of Painting and Sculpture, La Esmeralda, INBA (National Institute of Fine Arts). Also, he painted his first fresco mural in the Belisario Domnguez Elementary School. 1954 to 1960.- Worked as architectural draftsman in the office of Buildings and Monuments in the Mexico City Government. He was commissioned to make a work Reliefs and a Group of Sculptors in the Sports City Magdalena Mixuca; he designed the symbol for the National Book Fair, a monumental sculpture 25 meters high, the painting pavilion, decorations in several other pavilions, and murals in the Pavilion of Mexico City. 1960.- Along with 40 Mexican artists he represented his country in the Second Biennial Interamerican Show in Mexico, where he got the Special Award. 1961.- Won one of the five international prizes in the Biennial Youth Show in Paris, France. 1962.- Individual shows in the Misrachi and Mer-kup galleries in Mexico City. Collective shows in the main Mexican cities, United States, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and Central America. 1963.- Adquisition Prize of the Mexican Hall of Fine Arts. Second Prize in the Contest for Mural Decoration of the PRI Building. Illustrates in modern offset lithography the book The Man by Dr. Mario Gonzlez Ulloa. Participates in the show Biennial Selections touring France. 1964.- The Museum of Modern Art in Paris purchases one of his works. He makes a show in the Reflets gallery in Brussels, in the Mokun gallery in Amsterdam, in the Biosca gallery in Madrid, and in the Creuze gallery, in Paris. 1965.- Collective show Six Mexican Painters in the House of Mexico, University City, Paris. Collective show Latin American Painters in the Villa Museum in Paris. 1966.- Individual show in the Mer-kup gallery. Collective shows, self-portraits and works, Modern Art Museum, Mexico City. Solo show Apuntes y Tintas, Edward Munch gallery, Mexico City. 1968.- Solar Show in the Palace of Fine Arts, Mexico City. Participates in a kinetic sculpture. Individual show in the Mer-kup gallery. Collective show Pain and Violence, Edward Munch gallery. 1969.- Coordinates the making of murals, sculptures and reliefs in the Morelos Residential Center, Doctores, Mexico City. Founding member of the multidisciplinary group Arte Colectivo en Accin (ACA), with the participation of Leopoldo Ayala, Jos de Molina, Amparo Ochoa, Juan Alejandro, Beatriz Munch, Sonia Furi, etc. Collective show The Prison, Edward Munch Gallery, Mexico City. 1970.- Coordinates the making of sculptures and children's games in the Children's Aid Institute (IMAN), Mexico City. Solo show Life, Death and Love Metaphsique, Edward Munch gallery. 1972.- From this year on he has painted more than 150 murals in the principal universities of Mexico, in teachers' colleges, CREN's, technical schools, peasant communities, and poor neighborhoods, and decides not to participate in competitive shows. He ilustrates de book Altamira by Dr. Mario Gonzlez Ulloa, special edition. 1973.- He ilustrates the book Las Mariposas de la Ta Nati, by Roberto Lpez Moreno, Ediciones de Cultura popular, Mexico City. 1974.- Collective show The New Figuration of the World in Tokyo, Japan. 1975.- Individual Show in the Mer-kup gallery. 1976.- Individual show in the hotel of the Ex-Hacienda de Corts, in Cuernavaca, Morelos. Makes a portable mural entitled Repression-Revolution, 90 meters square. 1977.- Proceso show, Mexican Hall of Fine Art, participants: Jess Gutirrez Martnez, Armando Ortega, and Jos Hernndez Delgadillo, in which he presented the 45 minute movie Liberation, drawn in color, made jointly with the poet Leopoldo Ayala, the composer and singe Juan Alejandro, the actress Beatriz Munch and the producer David Celestinos. 1979.- He ilustrates the first handcraft poetry booklet which opened Las Ediciones Artesanales del Coyote Esquivo, La Huilotita Maanera, of the poet Jos Tlatelpas, Delambo handcraft Publishing and El Coyote Esquivo, Mexico-Peru, 1979. 1980.- He participates in the multimedia and art show Death and Creation, Cultural center od The national Politechics University, Mexico City. Collective show Our Face, national Auditorium gallery, Mexico City. 1981.- Individual show in the Hall of Mexican fine Arts. He ilustrates the handcraft booklet The Mexican Rebel Poets (Leopoldo Ayala, Benito Balam, Roberto Lpez Moreno and Jos Tlatelpas), The Sawarabi Press, Kyoto, Japan (Translation by Kazumi Kanazawa). 1983.- Individual show in the Mexican Hall of Fine Arts; presents the series of engravings known as Sally Ann, based on the poem by the same name written by the poet Leopoldo Ayala. He organizes together with Jos Tlatelpas, Benito Balam and other artists The Independent Homage to Jos Clemente Orozco, in his Centennial. 1984.- He participates in the realization of 68 a Collective Mural of 1600 square metres in the floor of La Plaza de las Tres Culturas, Tlaltelolco, Mexico City.

1985.- Makes a series of 22 originals for silk screening for the collection Earthquake 85 about the tragedy in Mexico City and other parts of the country. Collective show Image and Poetry, with the participation of poets and artists, in the Gandhi gallery, Mexico City. He participates in the conference and show Hiroshima: Weapons and Nuclear War with Kazuo Chujo, Atsuhiko Yoshida, Luis Y. Aragn, Kyoko Matsumoto and Jos Tlatelpas. 1986.- Makes a 200 square meter mural across from the Garden of Art in the city of Pachuca, Hidalgo, Struggle and Contradictions in the Hidalgo State, near to the Art garden in Pachuca City, Hidalgo. He ilustrates the book Motivos Para la Danza by the poet Roberto Lpez Moreno, Factor Editions, Mexico City. Collective show Confrontation 86, National Fine Arts Palace, Mexico City. 1988.- Illustrates the book Desde Los Siglos Del Maz Rebelde (Since The Centuries Of The Rebel Corn), prologue by Horacio Caballero, written by the poets Mario Ramrez, Jos Tlatelpas and Benito Balam, in commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of the popular student uprising of 1968. 1989.- Painted the mural The New Man-Toward the Future, acrylic on wood, 58 square meters; Auditorium of the National Hotel of Corts, in Cuernavaca, Morelos. 1990.- Mural Peasant Struggle, acrylic on canvas, 4.65 by 1.65 meters. Member of the International Directory of COMAP (later referenced as COMAV, World Council of Fine Arts).
