Migration with VMware Converter

Cloning and System Reconfiguration of Physical Machines


Cloningistheprocessofcreatingacloneddisk,wherethecloneddiskisavirtualdiskthatisanexactcopyof thesourcephysicaldisk.Thisinvolvescopyingthedataonaphysicalsourcemachinesharddiskand transferringthatdatatoatargetvirtualdisk(thenewcloneddisk). Systemreconfigurationistheprocessofadjustingthemigratedoperatingsystemtoenableittofunctionon virtualhardware.Thisadjustmentisperformedonthetargetvirtualdiskaftercloningandenablesthetarget virtualdisktofunctionasabootablesystemdiskinavirtualmachine. ConvertercreatesanewVMwarevirtualmachinebasedonasourcephysicalmachine.Themigrationprocess isnondestructive,soyoucancontinuetousetheoriginalsourcemachine.However,torunaconverted VMwarevirtualmachineonthesamenetworkasthesourcephysicalmachine,youmustmodifythenetwork nameandIPaddressononeofthemachines,sothephysicalandvirtualmachinescancoexist. NOTEYoucannotmoveOEMmediabetweenphysicalmachines.Thelicenseisattachedtotheserverwhen purchasedfromtheOEMandcannotbereassigned.OnlyretailandvolumeLicensescanbereassignedtonew physicalservers.IfyoumigrateanOEMimage,youneedaWindowsServerEnterpriseorDatacenter Edition licenseontheESXServertorunmultiplevirtualmachines.

Hot and Cold Cloning


Convertersupportshotcloningandcoldcloning.Hotcloning,alsocalledlivecloningoronlinecloning,entails cloningthesourcemachinewhileitisrunningitsoperatingsystem.Coldcloning,alsocalledofflinecloning, entailscloningthesourcemachinewhenitisnotrunningitsoperatingsystem.Incoldcloning,theuserreboots thesourcemachinefromaCDthathasitsownoperatingsystem,fromwhichtheVMware Converter applicationruns.Coldcloningleavesnofootprintonthesourcemachine. NOTEWhenhotcloningdualbootsystems,youcancloneonlythedefaultoperatingsystemtowhich boot.inipoints.Toclonethenondefaultoperatingsystem,changeboot.initopointtotheotheroperating systemandreboot.Afteryouarebootedintotheotheroperatingsystem,youcaninstallConverterandhot cloneit.

Local and Remote Cloning


Forlocalcloning,migrationisperformedwithConverterrunningonthesourcemachine.Withremotecloning, thesourcemachinecanbeaccessedwithouthavingtophysicallytouchit,aslongasitisrunning.

Remote Hot Cloning Workflow


Thefollowingworkflowisanexampleofhotcloning,inwhichthephysicalmachinebeingclonedexperiences nodowntime.YouusetheConverterwizardtosetupamigrationtaskandVMware Converterautomatically performsallofthecloningtasks.

Cloning Modes
Converterimplementstwocloningmodes:diskbasedcloningandvolumebasedcloning.

Volume-Based Cloning
Convertersupportsvolumebasedcloningforhotandcoldcloningandforimportationofexistingvirtual machines. Involumebasedcloning,allvolumesinthedestinationvirtualmachinearebasicvolumes,regardlessofthe typeinthecorrespondingsourcevolume.Filelevelorblocklevelvolumebasedcloningisperformed, dependingonyoursizeselections: VolumebasedfilelevelcloningPerformedwhenanysizesmallerthantheoriginalisselected. VolumebasedblocklevelcloningPerformedwhenthevolumesizeismaintainedorextended. Dependingonthecloningmode,sometypesofsourcevolumesmightnotbesupportedasfollows: Coldcloning(ConverterBootCD)supportsalltypesofdynamicvolumes,butdoesntsupport Windows NT 4faulttolerantvolumes.WindowsNT4withmirroredvolumesissupported. VirtualmachineimportingsupportsbasicvolumesandalltypesofdynamicvolumesexceptRAID.It doesntsupportWindows NT 4faulttolerantvolumes.WindowsNT4withmirroredvolumesis supported.Onlymasterbootrecord(MBR)disksaresupported.GUIDpartitiontable(GPT)disksarenot supported. HotcloningsupportsalltypesofsourcevolumesrecognizedbyWindows,exceptWindows NT 4 faulttolerantvolumes.WindowsNT4withmirroredvolumesissupported.

Disk-Based Cloning
Convertersupportsdiskbasedcloningforcoldcloningandforimportationofexistingvirtualmachines. Diskbasedcloningtransfersallsectorsfromalldisks,preservingallvolumemetadata.Thedestinationvirtual machinereceivesthesamevolumes,ofthesametypeasthoseofthesourcevirtualmachine.Diskbased cloningsupportsalltypesofbasicanddynamicdisks.

Migrating Existing Virtual Machines and System Images


WithConverter,youcanmovevirtualmachinesbetweenhostedproducts(productsthatrunasapplications onphysicalmachineswithoperatingsystems)andmanagedproducts(baremetalVMwareproductsthat provideathinsoftwarelayer(thehypervisor)thatenablesthemtorundirectlyonthephysicalmachine).

Converting Virtual Machines


ConverterletsyoumoveVMwarevirtualmachinesbetweenWorkstation,VMware Player,VMware ACE, VMwareFusion,ESXServer,ESXServer3iEmbedded,ESXServer3iInstallable,GSX Server,andVMware Server.ItalsoimportsvirtualmachinesfromMicrosoftVirtual ServerandVirtual PC.

Configuring Virtual Machines


ForVMwarevirtualmachineswhosedisksarepopulatedbyrestoringfromabackupofaphysicalhostorby someotherdirectmeansofcopying,ConverterpreparestheimagetorunonVMwarevirtualhardware.

Converting and Exporting Virtual Appliances


ConvertersupportsconvertingandexportingvirtualappliancesstoredinOpenVirtual MachineFormat(OVF andOVA).YoucanimportavirtualappliancetoruninanexistingESXServerorWorkstationvirtualmachine, oryoucanexportanexistingVMwarevirtualmachinetoanOVFvirtualappliancetoshareoverthenetwork.

Managing Tasks
Converterprovidesataskmanagertomanagemigrationsforasingleconversionorformultiple,concurrent conversions.AfteryoucreateataskbyusingtheConverterwizardtosetuphowyouwanttoimporta machine,usetheTaskViewofthemanagertodothefollowing: Startorstopaconversion. Changetherunorder. Forceaqueuedtasktorun. Controlthenumberofjobsrunningsimultaneously. Filtertheviewofwhattasksaredisplayed. Editatask. Viewatasksprogress. Cancelatask. Editandrestartafailedtask. Remove System Restore Checkpoints


VMwarerecommendsthatyouremoveallSystemRestorecheckpoints,regardlessofthecloningmode,unless youwantthetargetvirtualmachinetobeareplicaofthesourcesystem.RemovingallSystemRestore checkpointspreventsthetargetmachinefromrevertingtoapreconversionstate.Restoringacheckpointinthe targetvirtualmachinethatwascreatedbeforecloningthesourcemachinecandamagethesystemandcause thetargetvirtualmachinetobecomeunbootable. To remove System Restore checkpoints for Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows 2003 OntheCustomizationpage,selectRemoveallsystemrestorecheckpoints. SystemRestoreisenabledonWindowsVistaandWindowsXPsystemsbydefault.ForWindowsVista,ifyou aredoingvolumebasedfilelevelcloning,SystemRestorecheckpointsareautomaticallyremovedfromthe targetvirtualmachine,regardlessofthecheckbox.Ifyouaredoingdiskbasedcloningorvolumelevel blockbasedcloning,deselectingthecheckboxinstructsConvertertokeeptheSystemRestorecheckpointsin thetargetvirtualmachine. Complete the Convert Task Creation


ThefinalpageintheConversionwizardistheReadytoCompletepage.ClickFinishtoclosethewizardand displaytheTaskViewwiththeconversionjobinthetasklist.YoucanviewtheprogressintheTaskProgress tab.Youcanreturntoaqueuedjobandeditthesettings.BecauseBootCDdoesnotsupportconcurrent conversions,youcanconvertonlyonemachineatatime. Starting and Canceling Tasks
