PLAIN JANE SHAWL

by Patricia Brunner Revision B revised to clarify Right Wedge note, Fig 2 and Instructions copyright 2011

This is a free pattern offered to members of Ravelry. Please do not make copies except for your own use. Do not use this pattern for items which will be sold.

This pattern was inspired by a Ravelry Forum discussion about the shawls worn in the 2011 movie Jane Eyre. Thanks to all the people who participated in the discussion for the good ideas and thanks especially to tanyamarie for starting the discussion. My goal for this design was to make it look as close as possible to the one in the movie. Its meant to be a small, rustic looking shoulder shawl. It is knitted in garter stitch at a fairly firm gauge with no blocking and uses short rows to form the ruffle and to shape the back. The neck edging is worked in ridges of purl instead of knit.

YARN: worsted weight wool - 88 yds/50g (I used a wool fingering weight doubled for the shawl pictured) QUANTITY: 620 yards (7 50g balls) GAUGE: 4.5 stitches and 4 ridges per inch in garter stitch NEEDLE: U.S. #6 ADDITIONAL MATERIALS: 2 stitch markers (ring type that fit on needle) 1 locking stitch marker in one color and 1 in a contrast color

Note: shawl is knitted in one piece, Instructions are divided into sections for clarity. Row numbers refer to the rows in that section only. See ABBREVIATIONS for terminology.

RIGHT WEDGE Note: At this point, the stitches on the needle between the neck edge st marker and the ruffle st marker are spine stitches. The right and left wedges are formed by working a short row ridge in each spine stitch (A st marker) with a shorter ridge (B st marker) between each spine ridge. The B ridges are only one stitch shorter than the A ridges. See Figures 1 and 2. After the 2nd row of the B ridge is worked, the last stitch on the needle becomes the start of the new A row, see (row 10 below). There will be rather large gaps between the spine sts as they are worked. The gaps will close when the last WS Right Wedge row is worked and the wraps are knitted with the spine sts.

The decreases and increases within the right and left wedges form the rounded edge (rather than a V) at the bottom of the center back.
