FIVE WAYS to Prepare for Mass part III (in Series) 1. Know why you are there. The Mass is a
liturgy; the Word liturgy comes from a Greek Word meaningthe work of the people. You come to Mass not as a spectator but as a participant. You join with other members of the parish community in prayer, worship, thanksgiving, and communion. You are no longer just an individual. You are an important part of the Body of Christ. Take a few minutes each week to think about your place in the Body of Christ. It will give you a deeper appreciation of who you are. It will help you recognize the unique gifts and talents that you were given. It will give you a deeper appreciation of the other people in parish community.

DIOCESAN NEWS & INFORMATION

Needed signatures to eliminate Death Penalty

On November 30 2011 Pope Benedict XVI expressed his hope and his encouragement to eliminate the death penalty. In California we have the opportunity to do just that. Signatures are now being collected to put a proposition on the November 2012 ballot to replace the death penalty with life without possibility of parole. The Catholic Bishops of California have announced their support for this initiative. The death penalty violates the fifth commandment: Thou shall not kill. It violates the Churchs commitment to the dignity of human life. Because the death penalty is imposed most often on those of specific racial and ethnic backgrounds and even depends on what County you live in, it further violates the principles of Christian morality. Innocent people are often sentenced to death. The death penalty also costs the State of California $150 million per year more that life without parole would cost even though we rarely execute anyone and most people on death row die of old age. That money is badly needed for education, health care, and law enforcement. In fact, the proposition would require that $100 million dollars of the savings would be spent in three years to catch the 46 % of murderers and 56% of rapists who are never caught in California. Spending millions of dollars a year to do something immoral, when we cant afford to pay for what citizens need, is a further violation of basic morality.

Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) follows the Holy Fathers direction that we make good use of our digital presence in the world by making it easy to access the important ideals of the Catholic faith online and through television, radio, and print media. CCC provides content the way you need it, in podcasts for daily readings, on websites to connect with other faithful, and on social networking sites. Please be generous in this weeks Collection and support this important work. Remember, half of your donations stay in our (arch) diocese to support our communication needs. CCC is how the Good News gets around to you.
USCCB CLARIFICATION ON HHS Part II (in Series)

WASHINGTON The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops offers the following clarifications regarding the Health and Human Services regulations on mandatory coverage of contraceptives, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs. 4.Catholics of all political persuasions are unified in their opposition to the mandate Catholics who have long supported this Administration and its healthcare policies have publicly criticized HHS's decision, including columnists E.J. Dionne. . . , Mark Shields. . . , and Michael Sean Winters. . . ; college presidents Father John Jenkins. . . and Arturo Chavez. . . ; and Daughter of Charity Sister Carol Keehan. . . , president and chief executive officer of the Catholic Health Association of the United States.

5.Many other religious and secular people and groups have spoken out strongly against the mandate. Many recognize this as an assault on the broader principle of religious liberty, even if they disagree with the Church on the underlying moral question. For example, Protestant Christian. . . , Orthodox Christian. . . , and Orthodox Jewish. . . groups--none of which oppose contraception--have issued statements against the HHS's decision. The Washington Post. . . , USA Today. . . , N.Y. Daily News. . . , Detroit News. . . , and other secular outlets, columnists. . . , and bloggers. . . have editorialized against it. 6.The federal mandate is much stricter than existing state mandates. HHS chose the narrowest state-level religious exemption as the model for its own. That exemption was drafted by the ACLU and exists in only 3 states (New York, California, Oregon). Even without a religious exemption, religious employers can already avoid the contraceptive mandates in 28 states by selfinsuring their prescription drug coverage, dropping that coverage altogether, or opting for regulation under a federal law (ERISA) that pre-empts state law. The HHS mandate closes off all these avenues of relief.

Prayer for Vocations

O Father, you desire all of us to be happy. Stir up the grace of a religious vocation in the hearts of many men and women. Grant to them the willingness and generosity to give of themselves, their lives, their time and their talents to the service of Jesus Christ, Your Son, Our Lord and Savior, and to His Holy Church. May more men and women go forth as priests, deacons, brothers and sisters to bring the truths of our Catholic faith to all others so that soon they, too, may know You better and love You more...and serving You, be truly happy. Amen.

H-E-A-R-T
Take a moment to seek from your heart the answers to the following questions: First Question: DO YOU HAVE A HEART? Is there no more space for maters of the heart in your hard, stern dysfunctional and cold life? Second Question: WHAT KIND OF HEART DO YOU HAVE? Do you have a stony heart, a wooden heart or perhaps a plastic heart? Third Question: WHAT ARE THE SINS IN YOUR HEART? There is no real peace in your heart as long as you hold in it the following sins of the heart: H-Hatred E-Envy A-Anger R-Resentment T-Timidity A MOMENT WITH THE LORD Lord, bless my tongue, silence my tongue, use my tongue for your glory and for others nourishment. Amen. A MOMENT WITH THE WORD Thoughtless words cause wounds as deeply as any sword, but wisely spoken words can heal. Proverbs 12:18 +++++++++++++++++++++++

Amn.

Father Hannibal Dinner
The Fr. Hannibal Dinner was held on Saturday, February 11th. There were about 200 people that attended. Dinner was great, prepared by Rene Gonzalez. The youth group from St. Katherines volunteered to serve the dinner and help in the kitchen. There was a silent auction and a fashion show. It was great to see so many people support Fr. Hannibal House. All proceeds will be used to help the needy in our community. A big THANK YOU to all parishioners who attended or who donated to the event and help to make it a success. This is a gift from the heart.
