1 Air conditioning industry in India:In 2007-08, the estimated total market size for air conditioning in India was around Rs.9000 crores. Of this, the market for central air conditioning, including central plants and ducted systems, was about Rs.5000 crores, while the market for window and split air conditioners comprised the balance Rs.4000 crores. The commercial air conditioning segment catering to corporate and commercial customers amounted to around Rs.7000 crores.

The year 2007-08 saw big growth in segments such as infrastructure, power, healthcare, telecom and hospitality. In the IT/ITES sector, there was a slowdown amongst smaller players who were adversely affected by the depreciating dollar. However, large IT/ITES companies continued with their aggressive expansion plans. Although the retail sector witnessed some setbacks, especially in the food retail segment, there was significant growth in Tier 2 cities, offering new opportunities.

Based on plans announced by several players, the cumulative non-residential air conditioning opportunity over the next 5 years is estimated to be around Rs.38, 000 crores. With investments continuing in infrastructure and a buoyant economic environment, the commercial air conditioning Industry is expected to grow significantly over the next few years

MCKENSY7S

FRAMEWORK:-

HARD S-More tangible, more objective oriented Structure Strategy Systems

SOFT S - Less tangible, more cultural in nature Skill

Dayanand Sagar College of Engineering Page 20

Shared Values Style Staff FRAMEWORK:-

MCKENSY7S

ORIGIN The 7-S framework was first mentioned in The Art of Japanese Management by Richard Pascale and Anthony Athos in 1981. They had been investigating how Japanese Industry had been successful. At around the same time that Tom Peters and Robert Waterman were exploring, what made a company excellent? The 7S model was born at a meeting of these four authors in 1978. It appeared also in In Search of Excellence by Peters and Waterman. It was taken as a basic tool by global management consultancy company Mckinsey. Since then it is known as Mckinsey 7-S model. MEANING 7-S framework of Mckinsey is a management model that describes 7 factors to organize a company in holistic and effective way. Together these factors determine the way in which an organization operates. Manager should take in to account all seven of these factors, to be sure of successful implementation of a strategy large or small. They are all interdependent so if failed to pay proper attention to one of them, this may affect all others as well. On top of that the relative importance of each factor may vary overtime. This is a diagnostic tool for understanding organizations that are ineffective, guides organizational change, combines rational and hard elements with emotional and soft elements, managers must act on all Ss in pahyrallel and all Ss are interrelated. The seven elements are distinguished as hard Ss Strategy, Structure and System Feasible and easy to identify. They can be found in strategy statements, corporate plans, organizational charts and other documentations. Soft Ss Skills, Style, Staff & Shared values are hardly feasible and difficult to describe. They are difficult to describe since capabilities, values and elements of corporate culture are continuously developing and changing. They are highly determined by the people at work in the organization. Therefore it is much more difficult to plan or to influence the characteristics of the soft elements. Although the soft factors are below the surface, they can have a great impact of the hard Ss Structures, Strategies and System of the organization. Placing Shared Values in the middle of the model emphasizes that these values are central to the development of all the other critical elements. The companys structure, strategy, system, style, staff and skills all stem from why the organization was originally created, and what it stands for. The original vision of the company was formed from the values of the creators. As the value change, so do all the other elements.
Dayanand Sagar College of Engineering Page 21

The 7-S model is a valuable tool to initiate change processes and to give them direction. A helpful application is to determine the current state of each element and to compare this with the ideal state. Based in this it is possible to develop action plans to achieve the intended state. In the change process, many organizations focus their effort on the hard Ss, Strategy, Structure and Systems. They care less for soft Ss Skills Staff, Style, and shared values. Peters and waterman in In search of Excellence commented however, that mast successful companies work hard at these soft Ss. The soft factors can make or break a successful change process, since new structures and strategies are difficult t build upon inappropriate culture and values. These problems often come up in the dissatisfying results of spectacular mega mergers. The lack of success and synergies in such merger is often based in a clash of completely different cultures, values and styles, which make it difficult to establish effective common systems and structures.

1: STRUCTURE:It is the super structure of the organization, the other component being infrastructure. This involves division of organizational tasks and allocation of responsibilities among different departments. The way in which the organizations unit relates to each other: centralized, functional division (top down); decentralized: a matrix, network, a holding etc.

2: Strategy:Strategy is the choice of direction and the action the company adopts to achieve its objectives in a competitive situation. A strategy explains what are objectives of the organization and how the organization go about to achieve its objectives. To build a sizeable presence in the chosen international market over next few years. We are leading Indian engineering company with substantial competence in, and revenues from 3 streams of the businesses:Dayanand Sagar College of Engineering Page 23

Air conditioning Commercial refrigeration Professional electronics and industrial systems As of now our footprint is mainly India, however, we wish to progressively build sizeable presence in the chosen international market over next few years. We are customer focused organization, deliberately tuned to deliver a world class experience to corporate and commercial customer. As specialist, we serve our customer with differentiated products, expert solutions and value-added services. The nineties witnessed India entering an era of economic liberalization and an upsurge in competition as the dynamic business scenario attracted the world's most forward-looking corporations. It was time to re-look at existing business competencies, re-engineer those that were obsolete and forge ahead in acquiring new business competencies. In keeping with this focus, an advanced manufacturing facility was set up at Dadra in 1997, in technical collaboration with Rheem, USA, to enhance manufacturing competency. To strengthen its business operations in other businesses which include marketing and maintenance of hi-tech professional electronic and industrial products. A significant area of business for Blue Star is distribution and maintenance of imported professional electronics and industrial systems. These include turnkey engineered solutions in the areas of manufacturing, telecom, healthcare, defence, pharmaceuticals, banking and R&D. For over five decades, the Electronics Division has been the exclusive distributor in India for many internationally renowned manufacturers of hi-tech professional electronic equipment and services, as well as industrial products and systems. The Company has established profitable businesses for itself in most of the specialized markets it operates in, including analytical instruments, medical electronics, data communication products, material testing, and test and measuring instruments. 3: System:A system refers to the formal process and procedures used to manage the organization, In other words system refers to all the rules and regulations and procedures both formal and informal that compliment the organizational structure. This includes the way the functions of different departments are carried out. E.g.: MIS, Purchasing system, Performance appraisal etc.

An area where Blue Star is ahead of competition, it is project execution and management. If there is an area where Blue Star is ahead of competition, it is project execution and management. The Company has been the trend-setter and a benchmark in the industry for early completion of projects. In todays age, where the competitive landscape has made it imperative to shorten project life cycle times, Blue Stars credentials in speedy execution of projects is a huge differentiator. Every single project is monitored with the latest project management techniques and modules including BaaN ERP, MS Projects and Prime Vera. At the heart of Blue Stars project management skills are its people. Blue Star engineers and managers ensure that each installation is perfect in every way. Micro supervision ensures that systems and checklists are in place, time schedules are adhered to and project coordination is well planned. Resulting in exceptional project execution every time. The project leader and his team provide an excellent interface for the customer, consultant, architect and other associated agencies. The performance of the project team is evaluated at regular intervals as part of the corporate key result area of on-time delivery. 4: Style:Style refers to the leadership style of the top management and the overall operating style of the organization. Style impacts the norms that people follow and how they work and interact with each other and the customers. BLUE STAR follows both authoritarian as well as participative approach. In the case of decisions which are very important and difficult, the company follows authoritarian leadership pattern i.e., the top management takes the decision without consulting the employees. In case of decisions which are not confidential and feedback of employees is very required then participative leadership pattern is followed, in which employees are allowed to give their feedback and help management in decision making. Blue Star has an open-door policy and encourages employees to express their views openly. The management is always open to suggestions from all quarters and is easily accessible to employees at any level. The work culture also encourages innovation and team work.

3: SWOT ANALYSIS:The SWOT analysis is an extremely useful tool for understanding and decision- making foe all sorts of situation in business and organizations. SWOT is an acronym for Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats. SWOT analysis is a basic straight forward, model that provides direction and serves as a basis for the development of marketing plans. It accomplishes this by assessing an organizations strengths (what an organization can do?) and weaknesses (what an organization cannot do?) in addition to opportunities (potential favorable conditions for an organization) and threats (potential unfavorable conditions for an organization). SWOT analysis is an important step in planning. The role of SWOT analysis is to take the information from the environmental analysis and separate it into internal issues (strengths and weakness) and external issues (opportunities or threats). Once this is completed, SWOT analysis determines if the information indicates something that will assist the firm in accomplishing its objectives (Strength and opportunity) or if it indicates an obstacle that must be overcome or minimized to achieve desired results (weakness or threat). 1:- STRENGTH: Credentials of over six decades (Market leader in central air conditioning). Blue Star was founded in 1943, by Mohan T Advani, an entrepreneur of exemplary vision and drive. Learning Experience:-

Apart from getting the corporate exposure the most important thing which I learned is the disciplined among the employees.I also learned how companies work in the competitive environment. How to interact with the customers and get their feedbacks and work according to that for continuous improvement. Also have an experience of talking to the different department heads. I came to know how work is done by coordinating with other employees as a team in a decentralized manner. I realized how different employees have different skills, abilities, attitudes etc. and how they utilize in an optimum manner for achieving personal as well as organizational goals. I realized that nothing can take place of hard work and commitment in ones work to succeed and reach the zenith of professional life.
