.5MM Needles Notes: This is a complicated pattern. It is worked in rounds and incorporates knitting, but can be completed entirely with crochet. Abbreviations: dtr = double treble fpdtr = front post double treble [Figures] = Photos are to illustrate how to do stitches only. Pattern: R1: Ch 4 (acts as first dtr), 31 dtr in first st (32 st), slsst to join, ch 3, do not turn. R2: 2 fpdtr in each of the previous dtr (64 fpdtr), slst to join, ch 3, do not turn. R3: *Sk 2, 2 fpdtr in each of the next 2 st (4 fpdtr), 1 fpdtr in each of the skipped st (going backwards)*, 16 times around (96 fpdtr), slsst to join, ch 3, do not turn. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rTJ9nkUNc4 R4: 1 fpdtr in each of the last 2 fpdtr from previous round (going back 2 st onto R3), sk 6 (one whole cable is skipped), 1 fpdtr in each of the next 4 fpdtr, 1 fpdtr in each of the last 2 of the 6 skipped st (going UNDER the last 4 fpdtr just made-Figure A), *sk 2, 1 fpdtr in each of the next 4 fpdtr,1 fpdtr in each of the 2 skipped st (go under the 4 st just made)* (14 times). There should be 2 sets of 2 fpdtr slanting to the left: 1 fpdtr in each of the 4 stitches slanting to the right in between these 2 sets. 96 st. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9IdtJHJZhY R5: *1 fpdtr in each of the next 4 st slanting right [Figure B], 2 fpdtr in each of the skipped 2 st overtop of the 4 fpdtr just made [Figure C]*, (16 times). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rtDbr04q9c R6: 1 fpdtr in each of the next 4 st slanting right [Figure D], *sk 4, 1 fpdtr in each of the next 4 st, 1 fpdtr in each of the skipped 4 st (going under last 4 st )* (15 times), slst in each of the next 4 fpdtr slanting right (first set of fpdtr in this round), 1 fpdtr in each of the skipped 4 st (going under the last 4 st). R7: 1 fpdtr in each of the next 4 st slanting right, *sk 4 st slanting left, 1 fpdtr in each of the next 4 st slanting right, 1 fpdtr in each of the skipped 4 st overtop of the 4 fpdtr just

made*, (15 times), sk 4 st slanting left, 1 sl st in each of the next 4 st slanting right, 1 fpdtr in each of the skipped 4 st overtop of the 4 slst just made. R8: Repeat R6 R9: Repeat R7 R10: Repeat R6 R11: Repeat R7 R12: Repeat R6 R13: Repeat R7 R14-15: *2 dc, 1 dec*, around (96 st). Edging: - Cast on 100 st - 1 row knit -1 row purl (4 times), last row knit - Cast off. To complete this pattern with crochet, I would suggest dec stitches in row 15 to get 80 st, and either finishing in rows of hdc or alternating fpdc/bpdc for a ribbed effect. Sew edging to hat. Fasten off.
