The recent discovery of the melting polar ice caps has further fuelled the debate on global warming. Is it really due to the carbon dioxide in the air? An alternative school thought has claimed that it actually has more to do with ocean and the amount of salt in the water. 4

Most major rivers worldwide have been used to further develop our lifestyles. This has led to a large amount of the freshwater being used up before it reaches to the ocean. Perhaps it may not be to the extreme in certain regions, but there is a lot less freshwater reaching to the ocean today than decades ago. 8

The ocean is constantly being fed freshwater from the many rivers that flow to it. With all this freshwater going into the ocean how does it stay salty? A lot of this due to evaporation. Also, some of it freezes in the Polar Regions.

But if less freshwater is coming into the ocean and the same amount is evaporating then less of it will freeze. This will cause the seawater to become slightly saltier. This water will eat at and melt the freshwater polar ice caps. This keeps the balance of the salinity of the ocean at the prefect level for life under the sea. 15

Ok, so now what about the water we are keeping on the land? We water our crops, build dams, fill up tanks and so on. We do cause more evaporation every time we block, spray or separate the water. An analogy can be drawn to your mother mopping up a puddle, spreading the water over bigger area so that it evaporates quicker.

We do the same thing as we become more efficient in moving water to needed places; we cause more water in the air. Doesnt this water in the air go into the ocean? Yes, but it has some fun first as it forms clouds and insulates the earth. 22

As clouds compete with other clouds for space it causes more storms, hurricanes and turbulence in the seas as well as winds. Therefore more evaporation takes place, causing more insulating clouds and warmer climate which may also cause the ice caps to melt. this seems to be a very vicious cycle that brings more water into the delicate system adding to the problem of global warming. 27

Man, in his quest to better himself has also discovered underground lakes and rivers. These are water sources that are not part of the equation of our surface water. Now that we have tapped into this resource an imbalance has occurred, which the atmosphere cannot handle without change. This change, it seems, may be what we call global warming. 32

Read the poem Nature and answer the questions that follows

Nature We have neither Summer nor Winter Neither Autumn nor Spring. We have instead the days When the gold sun shines on the lush green canefields Magnificently. The days when the rain beats like bullets on the roofs And there is no sound but the swish of water in the gullies And trees struggling in the high Jamaica winds. Also there are the days when leaves fade from off guango trees And the reaped canefields lie bare and fallow to the sun. But best of all there are the days when the mango and the logwood blossom When the bushes are full of the sound of bees and the scent of honey, When the tall grass sways and shivers to the slightest breath of air, When the buttercups have paved the earth with yellow stars And beauty comes suddenly and the rains have gone.
