CROSSROADS APPROVES PART OF
REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CURRICULUM
CCA looks to hire full-time computer technician
coordinator, purchase more property
By Lauren Fitch
Pioneer Staff Writer
BIG RAPIDS After its second public hearing on a
new reproductive health curriculum, the Crossroads
Charter Academy Board of Education approved
on Thursday reproductive health text materials for
seventh through 12th grade students.
The board also approved a survey to accompany
the reproductive health curriculum and accepted
the denition of sexual activity as proposed by the
Reproductive Health Advisory Board.
Crossroads already has a health curriculum
and will use the same textbooks for middle school
and high school students that have been used for
the past couple years. After the advisory boards
approval, teachers now will teach the chapters on
reproductive health; approval for the chapter on
Sexually Transmitted Infections is pending.
STIs are mentioned in other parts of the book
and we didnt realize there was a whole chapter on
it, said Lynn Gullekson, superintendent. Its not so
much that there are any concerns, ... (the chapter)
just has to be reviewed by the advisory committee.
The Reproductive Health Advisory Board will
continue to meet to discuss how to teach elementary
students about HIV and AIDS, as required by
Michigan law.
In other business, the board approved posting a
position for a full-time computer technician coordinator
to accommodate the districts increased installation
of technology in its classrooms. Grand Valley State
University, the charter schools authorizing body,
recently donated 15 LCD projectors, which completes
the schools goal to have one in every classroom.
(A full-time computer technician coordinator) will
allow us to make the best use of all of our technology
that we have been able to implement, Gullekson
said. In the last few years, we have increased laptop
labs, computers, LCD projectors and smart boards.
We have a lot of cool things going on in the area of
technology, and that takes a person to manage that
and make sure its working properly.
Also, Crossroads will accept bids for a new
employee management company. Woodbridge
Management and Education Services currently hires
all the districts employees. Crossroads is seeking
other bids to comply with Gov. Rick Snyders best
practice guidelines, which require districts to accept
competitive bids on at least one contract over $50,000
as part of the stipulations to receive a $100 per pupil
incentive.
This is our only contract over that amount, said
board treasurer Laura Vallette.
The board also authorized Gullekson to proceed
on the purchase of new property for the school; it
hopes to have the sale completed by Februarys
board meeting.
Crossroads nalized the purchase of property
across from the elementary school at its last regular
board meeting.
Other business included:
n Vallette and Jimmie Rodgers were re-nominated
for another three-year term on the board;
n High school principal Ross Meads shared with
Gullekson a certicate of appreciation from the U.S.
Department of State for Crossroads participation in
the youth exchange program; and
n Board members were thanked for their service
as part of School Board Appreciation month.
To see video from the Crossroads board meeting,
visit www.bigrapidsnews.com. The board will meet
again at 7 p.m. on Feb. 9.
DONT TREAD LIGHTLY ON WINTER
TIRE SAFETY
(NewsUSA) - With winter upon us, tire safety in
cold weather is something every car owner should
be familiar with. Most drivers concentrate on tire
safety in hot weather to avoid blowouts, but the same
precautions should be exercised in the winter. One of
the most effective ways to be safe on the road is to
use a winter tire specially designed for cold weather.
Common all-season tires contain a tread compound
that gradually hardens when temperatures dip below
45 degrees, resulting in a decrease in traction. These
tires also tend to collect winter road debris, like snow
and ice, which can impact a vehicles performance
on wintry roads.
Mark Ballard, spokesman for Discount Tire
Company, Americas largest independent tire and
wheel retailer, advises motorists to replace all four
tires with winter tires if they can expect to encounter
snow and ice during the winter months. Its best to
use winter tires, especially if you live in an area with
extreme weather conditions where temperatures
are below 45 degrees on a consistent basis, he
explains. Relying on an all-season tire to do the
work of a winter tire can be dangerous to you and
other motorists.
In recent years, the Rubber Manufacturers
Association (www.rma.org) developed new standards
for winter traction, which led to technological
advancements in the manufacture of winter tires. For
example, a newer tread compound featuring a higher
sillica content retains tire exibility even in freezing
temperatures, allowing the tread to maintain its grip
with the highway.
Also, tread block design has been greatly improved
with the addition of thousands of sipes, small cuts
in the tread block that provide extra biting edges for
more traction.
Every aspect of todays winter tire has been
engineered to provide better traction and greater
ability to quickly expel water, slush and snow, provide
a quieter ride and allow for longer tread life, says
Ballard.
Winter tires tend to be slightly more expensive
than all-season ones. But like all tires, winter tires
perform optimally when properly inated. Remember
that a signicant drop in temperature can lower air
pressure. Typically, a 10-degree drop will cause tires
to lose a pound of pressure.

tires.com.
DIGITAL REVOLUTION YIELDS NEW
OPPORTUNITY FOR FILMS
(NewsUSA) - Digital distribution revolutionized the
music industry to such an extent that its still reeling
from the transformative power of mass downloading.
As the music industry adjusts to the rocking changes
of the digital wave, the lm industry is going through
its own set of uncharted waters.
Though not without hiccups, digital distribution met
widespread success in the music industry. The digital
revolution, however, has now shifted focus to the lm
industry with the dawn of Netix, digital streaming
and video-on-demand.
Theres never been a better time to be in the movie
industry, says Peter Hoffman, CEO of Seven Arts
Pictures. Large studios are relying on big-budget
pictures like 3D titles, but that opens up space for
independent studios to work on small-budget lms
and capitalize on digital distribution.
Seven Arts embraced the opportunity afforded by
digital distribution and staged a digital release for
their most recent comedy, The Pool Boys. A digital
release via on-demand took place just days after
the theatrical release. Seven Arts recognized the
protability of electronic delivery and the home-video
market.
According to the annual Global Entertainment and
Media Outlook report, North America expected to
$12.2 billion in box ofce revenue but $27.9 billion in
home-video prots in 2011.
The home-video market is growing in signicance
as Blu-ray discs become increasingly popular, ticket
prices continue to rise and electronic movie delivery
transforms distribution. The Entertainment and
Media Outlook estimates an 13.8 percent annual
prot growth for electronic delivery.
Were seeing signicant market opportunity due
to the cutback by major studios on producing small-
budget lms and the proliferation of digital distribution
alternatives, says Hoffman.
Digital distribution made CDs practically obsolete,
yet a new world of music was born with iTunes,
Pandora and Spotify. Who knows what changes the
digital revolution shall yield for the lm industry? For
more information on the changing movie industry, go

REMOTE PC REPAIR AT YOUR
FINGERTIPS
(NewsUSA) - In a social media powered society,
instant gratication is something we have come
to expect. More of our daily routines are executed
online, be they personal or professional, so when our
computer crashes so does our productivity.
In the not-so-distant past, PC problems, virus
removal and most other computer-related issues were
resolved by carting your PC or laptop into a service
center. This is not an easy burden to bear when time
is of the essence. With immediate response in high
demand, computer support companies have moved
their services online, offering comprehensive tech
support without the hassle of waiting at in-store
service lines.
With the ability to get news, updates and results
online in real-time, shouldnt you be able to access
computer troubleshooting online when an issue
arises?
In an effort to harness the potential of remote access,
some standout IT businesses are implementing
remote services to create a better user experience
for their clients. Geeks On Call, a trusted provider of
on-site IT services nationwide, recently announced
the launch of their Remote PC Repair Services.
If a persons computer suddenly crashes, slows
down or gets a virus, Geeks On Call is there with
comprehensive technical support to see the issues
through to solution. Because the troubled computer
is remotely accessed through the Internet, there is
no need to wait for a technician to make a house call.
However, if there is no Internet access to the computer,
Geeks on Call still has an on-site assistance option
-- in many cases, it can get a technician to you the
same day you call. And unlike other services, it can
dispatch a technician directly to your location with the
ability to refund the majority of the service call.
By taking advantage of remote computer repair with
services like those offered by Geeks On Call, users
will see real-time solutions for serious computing
problems. Remote Services are available 8 a.m.
to midnight in the customers time zone at 1-800-
905-GEEK (4335). For more information, visit www.

mass radiation exposure in Japan and
Occupy Wall Street emerged to be a
historical, internationally united protest.
The year 2011 seized the idea of social
change and ran with it.
Will that momentum continue
throughout 2012? All signs point to yes,
and Walden Universitys recent Social
Change Impact Report conrms the
trend. The results indicate the importance
of social change and reveal that people
are taking action now and will continue
to do so in the future. The survey shows
that more than nine in 10 Americans (92
percent) have taken action to engage in
positive social change in the past year
and that more than half of them are
committed to engaging in future positive
change as individuals acting on their
own or in informal groups.
Around the world, people are thinking
globally and acting locally, notes
Jonathan Kaplan, president of Walden
University. People have a strong belief
in their own power to effect positive
social change and make a difference.
The Social Change Impact Report
also states that nearly nine in 10 adults
in the U.S. (88 percent) believe the best
way to have an impact on the world is to
make change at the local level. At a time
when many families and organizations
are vulnerable, and fewer resources are
available to support the socioeconomic
challenges that exist, individuals now
more than ever have the opportunity to
make a difference in their communities
and beyond.
Walden University offers ve practical
tips to encourage citizens to participate
in 2012.
1. Think about what kind of positive
social change you want to effect.
2. Assess what specic skills or
expertise you can offer to help address
a particular need.
3. Connect your passion and skills
with your commitment to serve.
4. Research ways your workplace
can get involved in the community.
5. Use a resource that can match
you with an organization that needs
your skills.

Change Impact Report, visit WaldenU.

HOW TO PREVENT VARICOSE
VEINS DURING PREGNANCY
(NewsUSA) - Cold winter months
often result in summertime births. July,
August and September are the most
common birthday months according
to the 2010 National Vital Statistics
Reports. Between 50 and 55 percent of
American women experience varicose
veins during pregnancy.
Its more than just a cosmetic issue,
varicose veins can be painful and can
lead to more serious health problems,
said Eva Rzucidlo, MD, chair of the
Society for Vascular Surgery Womens
Leadership Committee.
The U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services Ofce on Womens
Health states that the following factors
contribute to varicose veins.
* Pregnancy: The growing uterus puts
pressure on the veins.
* Hormonal changes: During puberty,
pregnancy and menopause.
* Medical history: Family members
with varicose veins.
* Obesity: Extra weight adds pressure
on the veins.
* Lack of movement: Sitting or standing
for long periods of time may force the
veins to work harder to pump blood to
the heart.
* Increasing age: Veins may weaken
with age.
Lifestyle changes and medical
treatments can often reduce varicose
veins. Suggestions to ease the
discomfort include:
* Sunscreen
* Regular exercise
* Proper weight
* Not crossing legs when sitting for
long periods of time
* Elevating legs when resting
* Not sitting or standing for long periods
of time
* Wearing elastic support stockings
* Avoiding high-heel shoes for long
periods of time
* Eating a low-salt, high-ber diet.
The rst line of management for
varicose vein treatment is medical
management with compression
stockings worn daily, said Rzucidlo.
Another option is sclerotherapy, the
sealing off of the veins -- mainly done
for spider veins. Radiofrequency and
laser treatments are also options which
are minimally invasive procedures
often performed in a doctors ofce. For
very large varicose veins, a surgical
procedure known as vein stripping is
available.
