Research question (s) To what extent does usage of dictionary help the student of Year 5G to answer the comprehension questions?

Understanding Wikipedia - concluded that (1) vocabulary knowledge, (2) the reading reading comprehension instruction based on reading comprehension strategies, and (3) dictionaries were critical to effective reading comprehension teaching A dictionary is a great companion to stretch a small vocabulary. When you come across a word you're not familiar with, a dictionary helps you by defining the word and giving you examples of its use in a sentence. If you hear the word rather than reading it you may not be sure how to spell it. If you read the word, your may be faced with an irregular plural or participle. For instance, if you see the word "spoken" you need to look up the word "speak". http://lookwayup.com/free/why_dictionary.htm#student

Title: The usage of dictionary help the student of Year 5G to answer the comprehension questions. Research background SK Kuala Krau is a rural primary national school in Temerloh, Pahang. It is located about 40km from Temerloh. This school has 13 classrooms and it has a pupil population of 350. Most of their parents are rubber tappers and the others are government servant. It has 100% Malay students. The school has 27 teachers and only 2 of them are English optionists. In the classroom, pupils use a lot of their mother tongue and English is rarely used.

Research rationale Last year , 89% of the UPSR candidates just managed to obtain a pass in the subject and 6 of them got A. Most of them can read the sentences but they did not understand the main ideas or the meaning of the words correctly. Therefore, they did not answer the comprehension questions correctly. They seem to be able to answer the questions very well when they referred the words to the dictionary.

Selection of subjects The class of 5G is chosen because 80% cannot answer the comprehension questions correctly. Most of them answered 5 out of 10 questions. Pre-test I will give them a comprehension text. They will try to understand the text and answer the comprehension questions without referring to the dictionary. Posttest I will also prepare the same text to them but they are allowed to use the dictionary as their reference. Both the texts consist of 10 objective questions each. Pupil questionnaires A pupil questionnaire consisting of 10 items is also prepared to get information about pupils feeling towards the use of dictionary to answer the comprehension questions.
