The Greek translators' mistranslations and alterations of sense in psalms 1 to 18 (with a translation of the Hebrew and the Greek

in parallel columns) By David Bruce Gain. For brevity, relatively minor differences are ignored. A reference to the discussion of a word in italics can be found in the alphabetical index of words at the end of the file. My translation of the Hebrew of the psalms is based on a study of all occurrences of words in the Hebrew Bible, taking cognate languages also into account; it often differs strikingly and in important ways from the most used translations of the psalms, which are ultimately based on the work of men who had no Hebrew concordance and instead often relied on the Old Greek (hereafter OG), sometimes improved by the use of other Greek translations (for a sample of which see my translations and commentary on psalm 18) to give the sense of the Hebrew; how misleading this can be in the psalms can be be seen from comparing his translation (translated in blue below) to the Hebrew (given in translation in parallel in red). I claim no more for my translation than that it is a reasonable approximation to the sense of the Hebrew; an attempt to assign a more precise sense to a word in a particular passage may result (as often in OG in psalms) in foisting a context based guess or one's own (or someone else's) preconceptions onto the author. Greek texts used: Old Greek (hereafter OG): Rahlfs, A. Psalmi cum Odis, 1931. Aquila, Symmachus and the Quinta (the fifth column in Origen's hexapla): Mercati, J: Psalterii hexapli reliquiae, 1958. For Aquila and Symmachus I have printed for psalm 18 the retroversions from Syriac found in Field, F: Origenis hexaplorum quae supersunt, 1875, printed in ordinary characters to show their conjectural nature. The OG is in blue, and other translations (cited only in the commentary on psalm 18) agree with it in the Mercati fragment (ignoring minor differences) unless specifically mentioned; in other parts of psalm 18 Aquila and Symmachus must be understood to survive only in words between | marks; colours: Aquila Symmachus Quinta; agreements are coloured as follows: Aquila with Symmachus olive, Aquila with Quinta maroon, Aquila with Symmachus and Quinta grey, Symmachus with Quinta green. The < sign indicates an omission. Biblical Hebrew verbs have a prefix form and a suffix form; they do not differ detectably in sense; they sometimes present problems to those wanting to put in tenses; if the author is obviously talking of the past or the future, there is no problem, but putting tenses into the psalms, usually timeless utterances, is an arbitary procedure. OG, generally followed by later translators, generally gave these forms the tenses they have in Aramaic, the prefix form the future and the suffix form the past, leading to a strange shortage of present tenses. I discuss his and other Greek translators' tenses only in the commentary on psalm 18. In the translation of the Hebrew of psalm 18 I have indicated prefix forms of verbs by underlining the first letter of the verb. times: in 1-17: 11, 9; 18-58: 6, 18; 59-150: 0, 36. The translators of Job and Proverbs overwhelmingly use ASEBHS (over 100 times). It seems that the translator, as he went on, felt more and more unhappy with the translation "irreverent", after 58 abandoning it altogether. 1 fluent lcym pestilent LOIMOI. The word is found once elsewhere in psalms, at 119.51: zdym hlycny (of those boiling being fluent against me), UPERHFANOI PARHVOMOUN (the arrogant have been against the dispensation). It seems that the translator did not know this word, found in Ge 42,23: whm l) yd(w ky $m( ywsp ky hmlyc bynhm (and of their not being connected, yes, to Joseph's listening; yes, of there being one fluent between them), presumably because the wordbook (on which see on 2 sounding) had the translation ERMHNEUTHS (interpreter) taken from the OG at this point (lcc does not occur elswehere in the hexateuch) but guessed the meaning from the context; here irreverent and failures suggested pestilent. At 119.51 the arrogant hlycny as far as very; I have not leant aside from thy dispensation suggested have been against the dispensation. 2 Yahweh yhwh the master KURIOS. The translator replaces the Hebrew with the standard OG mistranslation (found 6,814 times) which is based on the Hebrew )dny (my master), referring to Yahweh, which occurs 547 times in the Hebrew Bible, translated 478 times in the OG with KURIOS (master), as at 2,4. 2 sounding yhgh reflect on MELETHSEI. It seems that there was a rather faulty wordbook of Hebrew Greek equivalents, partly drawn from the hexateuch, used by both the translator of psalms and the translator of Isaiah, among others. Jo 1.8 reads: l) imw$ spr htwrh hzh mpyk whgy+ bw ywmm wlylh (of this indication of the teaching not disappearing from thy mouth and of thy intoning it day and night); KAI OUK APOSTHSETAI H BIBLOS TOU NOMOU EK TOU STOMATOS SOU KAI MELETHSEIS EN AUTWI HMERAS KAI NUKTOS (and the document of the regulations will not be displaced from thy mouth and thou wilt reflect on it day and night); the translator may have known the real meaning "intone" of hgh (in which case his "reflect on" is a free translation, which does not accord well with "mouth", which must refer to intoning) or he may not, in which case he guessed the meaning; it seems his translation came into the wordbook and was copied by the Isaiah translator 6 times and the psalms translator 13 times; he only abandons it when the context clearly shows that sound is meant: 5,2: Cause thine ears to be on that of my saying, Yahweh; understand my sounding; Let my communications be in the ears, master; have insight into my cry. 9,17: sounding; exalt! a song of plucking between. 92,4: to the sound of the harp; with song on the harp. 115,7: of their not sounding in that of theirs for chewing with; they will not voice in their throat. On the wordbook see also on 1,1 fluent, 4,5 be still, 10,8 18,30 trial. 4 from the face of the land; there being no obvious reason why this should have been omitted from the Hebrew, it seems to be an addition, either by the translator or by some early copyist. 5 that joining (d+; the translator had a text in which this had been corrupted to (c+ the advice of (or he misread it as such or, under the influence of the judgement preceding, changed it to such), giving his translation. 5 clear cdyqym regulated DIKAIWN; the usual (very common) translation in the psalms and everywhere in the OG, obviously thinking of the Mosaic law. Psalm 2 1 Why tribes assembling and folk sounding that empty? 2 Of the chiefs of the land stationing themselves and the preeminent founding as one against Yahweh and against his anointed one. 3 And of our tearing off that disciplining of theirs and dropping that thick of theirs away from us. 4 Of the one staying in the heavens being entertained; of my master ridiculing them. 5 Of his speaking to them then in his snorting and harrying them in his blazing. 6 And of my libating my chief on Zion, the hill of my dedication. 7 Of my indicating that marked out by Yahweh; of his saying to me: "Thou my creation. Of my birthing thee this day. 8 Ask me and of my giving tribes as thy gain and the ends of the land as thy possession. 9 Of thy harming them with a shoot of iron; of thy strewing them as a shaper's utensil". 10 And now, chiefs, be enlightened; be disciplined, deciders of the land. 11 Work for Yahweh with fear and revel in quivering. 12 Clasp that produced, in case of his snorting and thy being lost on that forwarding, with his snorting blazing in a little. The advancement of all trusting him! 1 Why have clans pranced around and people reflected on that empty? 2 The rulers of the land have placed themselves nearby and the firsts gathered to the same against the master and against his anointed one. Plucking between. 3 We must burst through their ties and cast off their yoke from us. 4 The one with a household in the heavens will laugh at them and the master will snort at them. 5 Then he will speak to them in his anger and unsettle them with his feelings. 6 I have been placed as ruler by him, on Zion his sacred hill, 7 being a messenger of the master's arrangement; the master said to me: "Thou art my son; I begot thee today. 8 Request me and I will give clans as thy dispensed allotment and the ends of the land as thy holdng. 9 Thou wilt shepherd them with an iron stick, impact them as a potter's equipment". 10 And now, rulers, have insight; be trained, all judging the land. 11 Serve the master with fear and exult in him with trembling. 12 Take training, in case the master be angry and you are destroyed from the way of regulation when his feelings quickly burn. Acclaimed all trusting him!

1 assembling rg$w; assembling suits 55,15: of our sweetening participation in the house of Elohim, going in the assembly (rg$); the Greek pranced around EFRUAXAN does not suit 55,15 (where the translator has OMONOIAI, in agreement in consideration); clearly, he is here dramatizing to suit the context. 2 founding nwsdw; the Greek, with gathered SUNHCQHSAN seems to have read nw(dw (joined), unless gathered is used to continue the sense of placed themselves nearby. 6 And of my libating my chief on Zion, the hill of my dedication w)ny nskty mlky (l cywn hrqd$y; I have been placed as ruler by him, over Zion his sacred hill EGW DE KATESTAQHN BASILEUS UP' AUTOU EPI SIWN OROS TO AGION AUTOU; the translator considered David to be the author of all the psalms, including this one, hence changed the Hebrew from a reference to David's libating a ruler to one of David's being appointed ruler. 7 creation bn; connected to bne create; the mistranslation son UIOS is found 3,670 times in the OG and 94 times in the psalms; it is strange in many passages, e.g. 29,1: sons of rams, 29,6 son of lonehorned ones, and downright peculiar in others, such as in the very common formula a creation of x years, as at Ge 11,10 Shem a creation of a hundred years, Shem the son of a hundred years. It is also mistranslated with TEKNON "child" 129 times in the OG, as at 34,12, where it creates the false impression that the psalmist is not addressing adults. 9 Of thy harming them +r(m; taken up in the second half of the verse, referring to smashing people as one would smash a pot, this showing that thou wilt shepherd them (from r(h) POIMANEIS AUTOUS is a mistranslation. 12 that produced br; training PAIDEIAS; clasp that produced, since it is all important; if you produce nothing you are a useless worker and will be destroyed; it seems that the translator took br as the Aramaic word meaning "one produced", referring to a son (although this makes no sense and a son has already been referred to with the Hebrew bny (my creation) in verse 7) and so wrote take PAIDIOU the son, emended to give a semblance of sense to take PAIDIAS training. Yes, 8 Rise, master, protect me, my God, because thou of thy striking all mine enemies on the hast smitten all at enmity with me for nothing, cheek; of thy breaking the teeth of the conimpacting the teeth of failures. 9 Protection the demnable. 9 From Yahweh, freedom for thy master's and thy message as desirable on thy people, thy blessing; exalt! people. 1 A paean mzmwr plucking YALMOS; a rather strange translation; the words and singing are what is important, the accompaniment with a plucked instrument, if any on a particular occasion (other types of instruments or no instruments are also possibilities) only secondary; the translator loved his plucking; he also uses it to translate "music" (e.g. 4.1), and "plucking between" to translate "exalt" (e.g. verse 3). 3 exalt slh, taking this as the same word as sll exalt; an instruction to do something visible and or audible in honour of Yahweh Elohim; it occurs 71 times in the psalms (3 times in the psalm in Habbakuk); plucking between DIAYALMA (a guess; the translator had plucking on the brain) occurs 92 times in the OG; this variation (the OG has it 21 times more than our current Hebrew text) proves at least one episode of additions; there may well have been many more; none of the occurrences need come from men who composed or revised the text; some or all could be from men responsible for actual performances; so, that "exalt" is not always (though it usually is) appropriate to the actual words before it does not prove that the translation is wrong; its correctness is supported by the consideration that slh should be standard Hebrew, understood by everybody; it seems improbable that there was such a word slh whose sense is completely unknown to us from elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible. 8 on the cheek lxy for nothing MATAIWS; it seems that, in the translator's copy, the y had been accidentally dropped from lxy and the resulting lx corrupted to or misread by the translator as lh (x and h are very similar in Hebrew/Aramaic writing); he read this as for nothing (cf Da 4,32: klh x$ybyn they are thought of as nothing).

Psalm 4 1 To the perpetuator: to music; a paean of David's. 2 At my calling, begin for me, Elohim of my clearness; of thy expanding for me at the pressing; accept me and listen to my causing consideration. 3 Creations of a man, continuing to when my solidity for humiliation, your wanting that empty, your seeking lies? Exalt! 4 And be connected to Yahweh's distinguishing the loyal for himself; of his listening at my calling him. 5 Be convulsed and be not punishable; say to your hearts on that of your lying on and be still; exalt! 6 Slaughter slaughterings of clearness and be secure in Yahweh. 7 Plenty say: "How our seeing that pleasing?" Try the brightness of thy face on us, Yahweh. 8 Of thy giving rejoicing to my heart beyond the time of their grain and their vintage being plenty. 9 As release, of my, as one, lying down and sleeping; yes, of thy, Yahweh, apart causing me to stay secure. 1 To the fulfilment, with plucking; a song for David. 2 At my calling, the God of my regulatedness has listened to me; thou hast broadened for me in cramping; pity me and listen to my supplication. 3 Sons of men, until when heavy hearted? 1 To the perpetuator lmncx; the heading instructs perpetuators, ones responsible for the psalms' continued use; OG translated the participle mncx "the one perpetuating" as if it were the noun ncx "perpetuity", giving his nonsensical to the fulfilment EIS TO TELOS which is found in 50 psalm titles. Symmachus' that of victory EPINIKION at 18,1 comes from the OG and the contents of the psalm (he is also known to have used it in 30 other psalm titles); Aquila's for the victory maker TWI NIKOPOIWI changes that of victory to a reference to Yahweh (Aquila did not, of course, get that of victory from Symmachus, who wrote after him, but from some earlier version, copied by Symmachus). 1 to music bngynwt with plucking EN YALMOIS; the translator had plucking on the brain. 2 begin for me (nny has listened to me EISHKOUSEN MOU; the translator "improves" a plea for help to a statement that help has been granted. 3 my solidity for humiliation kbdy lklmh; the translator read kbdy lb lmh (k and b are very similar in Hebrew writing), giving solidity of heart? Why; hence his translation, but the psalmist is talking of his own suffering; talk of those causing his suffering themselves suffering is quite out of place. 3 wanting )hb love AGAPAN; the verb )hb occurs 38 times in the psalms, always translated by AGAPAN except at 88,19, where it is translated with FILOS (cordial), the noun )hbh twice, translated with AGAPAN or AGAPHSIS. That "love" is a mistranslation is shown by passages such as Nu 10,19: and of your wanting a dependent; yes, of your being dependents in the land of Egypt. 4 distinguishing hplh; the Greek translator read hpl) surpassing; this not making much sense, he changed it to astonishes EQAUMASTWSEN. 4 the loyal xsyd his hallowed one TON OSION AUTOU; this inadequate translation of this word and the mistaken translation "concern" or the like for xsd have lead to very significant misunderstandings of the meaning of the psalms and other books of the Hebrew bible. Israel is loyal to Yahweh because he is their God; Yahweh is loyal to Israel because they are his people; family and clan and others with mutual obligations are loyal to each other. xsd occurs 246 times in the Old Testament, 126 in the psalms; xsyd occurs 32 times, 24 in the psalms; combined they occur 278 times, 152 in the psalms. The translator always translates xsyd with OSIOS, hallowed; he always translates xsd with ELEOS, concern, or derivatives, except at 44.27 ONOMA (name), 52.3 ANOMIA (that contrary to dispensation), where a case could be made for the other xsd (revile), and 109.12 OIKTIRMWN (pitying). Clearly, xsd and xsyd are forms of the same word, which can't mean both concern and hallowed; loyal and loyalty fit both forms. 5 be convulsed rgzw; read this with the whole verse; the sense: "Even if you are convulsed, Yahweh will not punish you; at night on your bed think of Yahweh's protection and you will be calmed"; be angry ORGIZESQE makes little sense; rather a poor translation. 5 be still dmw be stabbed KATANUGHTE; same nonsensical mistranslation at 30,12 and 35,15. At Le 10,3: wydm )hrn (and of Aaron being still) the translator has KAI KATENUCQH AARWN (and Aaron was stabbed, i.e. very disturbed); the translator felt the Hebrew "being still" was too weak, as Aaron's sons were in very serious trouble (10,1-2); it seems the wordbook (on which see 1,2 sounding) took the translation in Leviticus as an exact and literal translation of the Hebrew; hence the psalm translator's nonsensical mistranslation here, used also by the translator of Isaiah 47,5: $by dwmm (stay silent), KAQISON KATAVEVUGMENH (sit stabbed).

Pietersma Septuagint Exegesis 461 in Flint, P: The book of psalms (2004), to the translator the y infix in hnxylwt made the word into a verbal (hiphil) raher than the noun nxlh; the Hebrew article as well as the wt ending suggested a nominalized participle; as wt is feminine, he made his translation feminine (THS and the OUSHS ending of KLHRONOMOUSHS); nxl and its derivatives are normally translated in the OG with KLHRONOMEIN (have a dispensed allotment) and derivatives (159 times) (indicating a belief (very common in the Hebrew Bible) that the Israelis were entitled to the land they had conquered). The translator thus ended up with the translation UPER THS KLHRONOMOUSHS; there being no feminine noun preceding for this to refer to, this means on the woman with a dispenses allotment; the translator was oblivous to the fact that this is nonsense. 8 habitation hykl shrine NAON; hykl is found 13 times in the psalms, always translated with NAOS, except at 45,9, where the translation is free. Since the word refers to a chief's house at 45,16 "the habitation of the chief" and elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible, it is clear that NAOS, shrine, is a mistranslation. 11 rebellion p$( irreverence ASEBEIA; in the 16 other places of the psalms where p$( is found, the translator has a different (better) translation; his irreverence here is clearly caused by his shrine in verse 8.
