AVIAN FLU OUTBREAK TIMELINE 1 1996 The highly pathogenic H5N1 virus is isolated from a farmed goose in Guangdong Province, China. The rst discovery of this new strain originally attracts little attention. 2 May 1997 Eighteen cases of in Hong Kong are infected with avian in uenza H5N1 in the rst known case the virus infecting humans. Six people die from the outbreak. 3 Feb 2003 Six years after the rst deaths linked to the virus, a subtype remerges. Two human cases, one of which is fatal, are con rmed in a Hong Kong family with a recent travel history to Fujian Province, China. Dec 2003 South Korea con rms highly contagious strain of bird u has infected a chicken farm near Seoul. 4 Vietnam, Cambodia, Mongolia, China, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and North Korea later con rm similar outbreaks. Jan 2004 Vietnam identi es H5N1 as the cause of human cases of severe respiratory disease with high fatality. Sporadic human cases are reported through 5 mid-March. July 2005 Russia con rms rst outbreak of bird u and begins cull of 600,000 birds. Simultaneous outbreak of bird u strain deadly to humans con rmed in seven 6 villages in Kazakhstan marks the rst cases outside South-East Asia. Indonesia con rms its rst human case.

7 Oct 2005 Thai boy diagnosed with H5N1 strain of bird u two days after his father became the 13th man in the country to die of the disease. The World Health Organisation (WHO) con rms that death toll in Asia has now reached 61, comprising 41 in Vietnam, 13 in Thailand, 3 in Indonesia and 4 in Cambodia. Jan 2006 Turkey con rms its rst two human cases. Sporadic cases continue to be reported in the coming 8 weeks, but rapidly end. Iraq con rms its rst human case, in a 15-year-old girl in Sulaimaniyah Feb 2006 France rst reports H5N1 in a single turkey farm, marking the rst appearance of this disease in 9 domestic poultry in the EU. March 2006 Egypt con rms its rst human case in a 30-year-old woman from Qalubiya. 10 Jan 2007 Japan sees a resurgence of bird deaths due to 11H5N1. Hungary and Russia also see more cases. In February, Pakistan, Turkey, Afghanistan, and Myanmar joined the list and Kuwait saw its rst major outbreak of the virus. Jan 2007 The rst discovery of the virus a ecting British 12 poultry.
