possessives
In English, we use possessive words to show ownership. In the sentence, This is his book, the word his is the possessive word because it shows who owns the book. We could rearrange the words and say, That book is his. Both sentence structures are correct. Another way to show a possessive is by using a persons name and adding an apostrophe and s (s) to the end of it. For example, we can show ownership of an object by saying or writing, This is Jeffs book. In this chart, you see that some possessive words are adjectives and some are pronouns. Person I you he she it we they Possessive Adjective my your his her it our their Possessive Pronoun mine yours his hers its ** ours theirs

For example: I have a book. It is my book. The chair is book. 1. You have a television. It is ________ television. The television is yours. She has a couch. It is her couch. The couch is ________. They have a lamp. It is ________ lamp. The lamp is theirs. ________ have a bench. It is my bench. The bench is mine. They have a clock. It is their clock. The clock is ________. He has the newspaper. It is ________ newspaper. The newspaper is his. We have those books. Those are ________ books. The books are ours. I have a stereo. It is ________stereo. The stereo is mine. I have curtains. Those are my curtains. The curtains are ________.

7.

showing possession
To show ownership or possession for singular nouns, add an apostrophe () and the letter s to the end of the singular noun, or name. For example: This is Joans book. These are Toms tables.

8. ** Its is the possessive form of it. Its is contraction of it isor it has. The confusion between its and its happens because s almost always shows possession. However, its is only used as a contraction of it is or it has. The rule always! is that if you can replace the word with it is or it has, use its. Otherwise, use its. 9.

10. He has shelves. Those are ________ shelves. The shelves are his.

Unlike in most cultures, it is common for young people to live in their own homes in the United States. When they go to college, students often live in dormitories or apartments with roommates. When they finish school, people usually live in an apartment, not with their families.

For example: The horse is theirs. Their curtains are new Now write two more sentences for nouns in the They column. 1. 2. _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________
