interpersonal communication is usually deIined by communication scholars in
numerous ways, usually describing participants who are dependent upon one another
and have a shared history. It can involve one on one conversations or individuals
interacting with many people within a society. It helps us understand how and why
people behave and communicate in diIIerent ways to construct and negotiate a social
reality. While interpersonal communication can be deIined as its own area oI study, it
also occurs within other contexts like groups and organizations.

Interpersonal communication includes message sending and message reception
between two or more individuals. This can include all aspects oI communication such
as listening, persuading, asserting, nonverbal communication, and more. A primary
concept oI interpersonal communication looks at communicative acts when there are
Iew individuals involved unlike areas oI communication such as group interaction,
where there may be a large number oI individuals involved in a communicative act.

Individuals also communicate on diIIerent interpersonal levels depending on who
they are engaging in communication with. For example, iI an individual is
communicating with a Iamily member, that communication will more than likely
diIIer Irom the type oI communication used when engaged in a communicative act
with a Iriend or signiIicant other.

Overall, interpersonal communication can be conducted using both direct and indirect
mediums oI communication such as Iace-to-Iace interaction, as well as computer-
mediated-communication. SuccessIul interpersonal communication assumes that both
the message senders and the message receivers will interpret and understand the
messages being sent on a level oI understood meanings and implications.
Public speaking is presenting your thoughts and Ieelings in a meaningIul way. There are a
multitude oI reasons that public speaking is important. Take a good look at the handIul oI
them we've collected Ior you and then ask yourselI why you think public speaking is so vital
to society.

O y learning how to eIIectively speak in public, you'll be able to increase your own
selI-conIidence. Since public speaking is one oI the most prevalent Iears in the
western world, by enabling yourselI to master this diIIicult skill you'll have the
conIidence that you need to meet and greet Iuture challenges.
O Public speaking regularly (and well) helps to make you more comIortable around
other people, including strangers. Once you're capable oI greeting and instructing an
entire room Iull oI strangers (or at least most oI them strangers), it'll be nothing to
smile and shake hands and meet new individuals in more personal and less threatening
circumstances.
O Public speaking will help Iine-tine your everyday verbal and non-verbal
communication skills. This is especially true Ior people who spend a great deal oI time
working with the written word, and have Iorgotten how to properly vocalize their
messages to get their points across best.
O It's important because at some point in liIe, just about everyone will be required to
involve themselves in one type oI public speaking or another. Accepting this Iact
quickly and preparing Ior it accordingly will help you wind up a step ahead oI your
competition at work, home and around town!
O &sing public speaking eIIectively will allow you to make a diIIerence in your
business, community and perhaps even the world. y sharing your inIormation with
others, you're better able to increase the impact oI your hopes, dreams, desires and
goals Ior your liIe and the world around you.
O ecause by the time you've learned to embody the importance oI public speaking,
you'll have learned another key principle. We can better persuade people when we are
able to appeal to them as human beings that have emotions, desires and thoughts just
like we do. This is the diIIerence between distinguishing between simple an audience
oI bosses, employees or clients and transIorming them in your mind into people with
real problems, hopes, Iears, dreams and desires.
O &sing public speaking to get your message across is a great way to humanize it,
regardless oI what that message may be!
O Public speaking is oIten a powerIul way to make a good impression on others and to
help bridge gaps in understanding, cooperation and set goals and objectives.
O The skills you'll glean by learning the art oI public speaking can boost your
perIormance and value in just about any arena - home, oIIice or liIe at large.
O earning to master public speaking early is a great way Ior students to perIorm better
in college, as well as oIIer them greater opportunities to be accepted into their top
choice schools.
O Public speaking is by nature important because it's a primary and powerIul avenue to
give oI your selI and to share with others in a proIitable way. Whether you're truly
oIIering Iree advice, or trying to convince your audience that you do really know what
they're talking about, public speaking is a perIect avenue Ior compelling give and take
that is hard to match any other way.

NO 3-As you improve your skills, you can enhance your career potential. Research on the
value oI good public speaking skills has shown that the number-one skill that most employers
want is good communication skills (Winsor et al., 1997). Also ranked above prior work
experience are listening ability, enthusiasm, and technical competence--all skills that you can
develop through Public Speaking &nbound. A report oI the National Association oI Colleges
and Employers (1999) asked employers to name the most important skill they sought in hiring
employees. Employers named communication skills.
There is no doubt that public speaking skills can beneIit your career. EIIective communication
can help you in Iinding employment. Interviewing, listening, and public speaking skills are
the most essential ways to prepare Ior a job, According to research, the top three Iactors in
helping college graduates obtain employment are 1) oral communication skills, 2) written
communication skills, and 3) listening skills (Winsor et al., 1996).
In addition to helping you obtain employment, communication skills are essential Ior
becoming successIul in your career. One survey Iound that 76 percent oI &S executives were
responsible Ior giving oral reports, Ior example (Wylie, 1980). Public speaking can provide
direct economic beneIits in your job. As you can imagine, good communication is essential to
corporate success. One study oI executives Iound that next to job knowledge, eIIective
communication skills are the key to success in the corporate world (Communispond, 1981)
