Urban Gardening Gurus (UGG) Program

( Wednesday mornings 9-12, April 11 – May 30)

Ever want to take classes to learn more about the how's, why's and benefits
of gardening in the city? Here's your chance to learn from some of
Richmond's favorite gardening gurus. Our UGG classes will be serious and in
depth yet still fun and accessible to all. Those interested in learning to be
better stewards of our urban landscape will experiment and experience new
sensations while exploring current theories and philosophies in city
gardening. We promote healthy eating, shopping at local farmers markets,
community gardens and education programs for sustainability. AND there
will be no tests!

We are lucky to have John Wise as the UGG program director. John has
been gardening since childhood. He has taught Master Gardening courses
with the VNLA and George Washington Garden program at the University of
Richmond, and was formerly a horticulturalist with Lewis Ginter Botanical
Gardens.

We believe that taking care of our city includes taking care of our
environment. Therefore as part of our program we ask participants to give
back to the WBCH community by volunteering time in the teaching gardens
and/or the Byrd House Market.

As you can see from the list below, we have an exciting range of topics
taught by a bounty of experts for our inaugural UGG program. Come join us
and bring a friend as we start this small but informative and dynamic garden
series!

The Byrd House Market is a pilot satellite farmers market program designed to take
fresh and local produce into specific city neighborhoods. Stacey Moulds, formerly of
the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and Market Manager of the 17th Street
Farmers’ Market, is the manager of our new Byrd House Market.

Classes will be held Wednesday Mornings From 9-12, starting April 11 in the William
Byrd Community House Library. We hope to have a fall series in the evenings and
weekends for those who can not attend the morning garden series.

The Urban Gardening Class is part of the Byrd House Market/Urban Garden Class and
Community Garden project, it is made possible through a $48,800 grant to the Farmers'
Market Advisory Council (FMAC) in partnership with the William Byrd Community House
(WBCH). The grant is awarded from Project For Public Spaces (PPS) as part of a national
initiative to diversify farmers' markets. Undertaken in partnership with the Farmers Market
Coalition (FMC), the grants are part of a three-year, $3 million grant-making program,
which began in 2005 and is funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Ford
Foundation.
