Holiday Potluck Celebration


The Silver Foxes will celebrate the holiday season with their third annual Holiday Party! Please bring an entre or side dish, hot or cold, homemade or store bought for everyone to enjoy. The Recreation Department will supply the drinks, desserts, plates, cups, utensils, festive holiday decorations and party games. Join your friends for good eats and holiday cheer. If you have any questions, or would like to volunteer to help with room set-up and clean-up, please call Paula Lisowski at (301) 891-7280. Lets party!

Gentle Water Movement, lead by Anne LeVeque, is a shallowwater class using flotation belts, aqua-barbells and water noodles. The use of water resistance will increase flexibility and strength. Prostate Cancer Lecture

Open Art Studio is Back!


Welcome back Alice Simsto lead a new Open Art Studio class on Monday, December 12. Expand your art skills or learn new techniques. Be creative in a relaxed atmosphere. The studio class is free, however, a registration form is required to participate in this class.

Mr. Wolfgang Mergner brought together seniors, service providers, and concerned citizens to form a group devoted to addressing the needs of Takoma Park seniors, and finding ways to provide services to meet those needs. Please join us for the next meeting. Photos by Paula Lisowski

Fitness and Health Bone Builders Exercise Table Tennis

The classes may be full due to their popularity, however (No Wednesdays) a waiting list is available. Bone Builders consists of three parts: balance exercises, weight training and discussion concerning diet, safety and exercise. This program, in partnership with Montgomery County, uses trained RSVP volunteers supervised by a certified trainer. Registration is required. Dance Studio. No cost. Come play this fun, energetic game. A great way to improve eye-hand coordination: helps keep the body healthy and the mind sharp. Drop-in. Game room.** No cost.

Luncheon and meeting of the Tuesday/Friday session of the Bone Builders class, Tuesday, September 20. As you can see, this is a very sociable, happy group of dedicated participants.

Line Dance Exercise

Barbara Brown instructs this line dancing class and demonstrates how exercise can be fun with music. No experience necessary so come and enjoy the activity. Registration is required. Dance Studio. No cost.

Carol Mermey, RYT, will introduce you to the ways yoga can help you increase flexibility, strength, and balance, using a series of seated and standing poses. Learn breathing and relaxation techniques. Beginners and experienced students welcome, work at your own level. You must bring a yoga mat to every class. Registration is required. Dance Studio. No cost.

**The Game Room is available for seniors to play pool, table tennis, basketball arcade and other active games.
Fall hours: Monday - Friday, 11:30 to 1:00 p.m. (No Wednesdays), and Saturdays 10:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m.

Learn to use the internet, a word processing program, and email. You need a Takoma Park Library card* to access the computers, and take this course. Instructors: Phil Shapiro, Jim Mueller and Jane Hawkanson. Registration is required. Six weeks. Computer Center. Class Fee: $10 Payable to the City of Takoma Park. *Library card fees: Free/Takoma Park residents, $37/ Montgomery County residents, and $60 non-Mont. Co. residents.

How to register for trips:

This symbol means the site is wheelchair accessible:

1. To begin the registration process, please call 301-891-7280 to include your name on a pre-registration list.
Note: This list will hold the participants place in line for 3 days to one week, depending on when the trip is scheduled in the month. Registration for the current months trip (s) will usually begin on the first business day of the month. To insure proper processing, it is best to speak directly with a Recreation Department staff person, and not leave a recorded message.

2. A Takoma Park Recreation Department registration form is required for each trip.
Note: This form must be received by the end of the pre-registration period, or the participant will be removed from the list, and the space will become available.

3. Please register in-person, or mail the registration form to: Takoma Park Recreation Department, 7500 Maple Avenue, Takoma Park, Maryland 20912.
Note: We have a fair first come-first serve system for all participants. Trips are popular and fill up fast, so register early. If you have any questions, please call Paula Lisowski, Seniors Program Manager at 301-891-7280. You may also call the general Recreation information line at 301-891-7290.

Trip # 1: Annual Gingerbread House Show, and the Darnalls Chance House Museum, Upper Marlboro, Maryland Join us for a sweet treat to view an amazing display of edible gingerbread houses. Sorry, no nibbling allowed! You will have an opportunity to vote on your favorite houses for the Viewers Choice Awards. After you visit this special event, please wander through the historic museum house, dedicated to the interpretation and study of the history and culture of 18th century Prince Georges County, Maryland, with an emphasis on the lives of women. Darnalls Chance was built between 1741-1742 by James Wardrop, who amassed a fortune as a merchant and entrepreneur in Upper Marlborough, Maryland. Bring spending money to purchase lunch at a local restaurant. Warning: there are stairs to the basement exhibit/gift shop and the second floor exhibit. However, the main floor and bathroom are wheelchair accessible.

Darnalls Chance

Trip # 2: Festival of Light, Mormon Temple, Kensington, MD Something new this year. By senior request, we will visit the light display at the Mormon Temple in Kensington, Maryland, one of the D.C. areas great community traditions. Join us for the holiday light display featuring 500,000 lights. In addition to the light display, there will be 16 decorated trees, and perhaps a free concert* in the state-of-the art Visitor Center theatre. * Depends on availability of on-site tickets.

We enjoyed an interesting history presentation on 10/12/11.

Courtney Hobson, Outreach Coordinator for Darnalls Chance Museum, in period costume, gave seniors a presentation on the history of Prince Georges County. We will visit the museum this month. See page 6.

Our trip to the Brewmasters Castle on 10/21/11 was fascinating.
