Alice and seventeen year-old Freda Ward had become close friends at the Higbee School for Girls in Memphis. So close, in fact, that they declared their love for each other and planned to elope to St. Louis to live together as husband and wife. When Freda's family stopped the relationship, forbidding Freda from seeing Alice, events took a dreadful turn. On the afternoon of January 25, 1892, Alice Mitchell accosted Freda Ward on Front Street, Memphis and rushed at her, cutting her throat with a straight razor. Alice was sentenced to life in an Insane Asylum - it was incomprehensible that a sane woman could behave like a man, love another woman and entertain the notion of marrying her. Her parents had divorced, her father was an alcoholic and relatives didn't talk about her mother. It is the story of a girl living in a loving home, but one where grief, depression and running with the wrong crowd became her routine as a teenager. On the night of May 26, 1994, Dunkin and her then-best friend, Jamie Hatfield, 16, talked on the telephone about killing Hatfield's boyfriend, police said. But the focus shifted to grandma. After hanging up from her friend, walked into her grandmother's bedroom, talked for a little while and then shot her. Courtney will be eligible for parole on May 26, 2034. Location: Grapevine, TX o At the age of 12, Lorraine Thorpe's parents separated and she was sent to live with and care for her alcoholic father. Few could have imagined at the time, just how dramatically this move would change her life forever. Three years later Lorraine would be embroiled in Ipswich's street drinking community. On the run from social services and mixing with people more than twice her age, Lorraine's adolescence was hijacked by a world of very adult interests. Along with friend Paul Clarke, she was found guilty of smothering her dependant father and of torturing and beating to death Paul's girlfriend, Rosalyn. The brutality of these remorseless crimes shocked Britain and belied Lorraine's role as caregiver. Sentenced to life in prison, Lorraine Thorpe (16) would become Britain's youngest convicted female double murderer. Location: Suffolk, UK ###
