The report is also a requirement for the partialfulfillment of United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON) internship program. The reportfocuses primarily on the

assignments handled, working environment, successes and shortcomings that the intern did encounter when handling various tasks assigned to him by thesupervisor.Because the various parts of the report reflect the interns shortcomings, successes, observations and comments, it would be imperative that the recommendations are alsogiven. Therefore the report gives a number of comments and recommendations on theinternship programme. It is hoped that this report would serve as a cardinal vehicle to the improvement of theinternship program. 1 CHAPTER ONE 1.0 INTRODUCTION1.1 Division of Early Warning and Assessment (DEWA) - Water Unit As an intern with United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), I was working inthe water unit under the supervision of Salif Diop who is the Senior Programme Officerand the Officer in Charge of Scientific Assessment Branch (SAB); Division of EarlyWarning and Assessment (DEWA). The internship was to lastfor three (3) months and as a result my internship came to an end on 8 th September, 2008.In somewhat more concrete terms, DEWA provides the world community with timely, scientifically credible, policy-relevant environmental data and information for decision-making and action planning for sustainable human development. It is while I was with 14generous if UNON can review its financial support to interns to reflect the ever changingeconomic situation in Kenya. From my experience I can wholeheartedly recommend UNON internship programme toeveryone who would like to experience an organization that has in my opinion realizedtheir vision to find the balance between being progressive, able to

balance humanconcerns, technical considerations and nevertheless being highly successful. What youhave to bring with you, is the willingness to improve knowledge about the environment, your work experience and you have to be able to work independently, self motivated andyou must solve smaller problems on your own. Anyhow, if youve got into some serioustrouble you will always find somebody assisting you to work it out.
