The Evangelical Free Church of Blairstown, 11 Lambert Road, will be receiveing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child through November 20th. A simple gift of toys, personal hygiene items, teddy bears, games, and socks will bring joy to children, of whom many have never received Christmas presents. The church is accepting donations to fill the shoeboxes. The concept of Operation Christmas Child began on October 10th 1990, when Dave and Jill Cooke of Wrexham, Wales were watching a broadcast on Romanian orphanages. They asked the question: How can we help the real victims, the children, who live in these situations day after day? They knew they could not stop the wars, but they could offer something the gift of love. Together, they filled a convoy of nine trucks with medical supplies, food, clothing and Christmas gifts for children, and headed into Romania, which had recently been devastated by war. This was the beginning of the worlds largest

childrens Christmas program. In 1993, Franklin Graham, International President of Samaritans Purse, adopted Operation Christmas Child. Since then, more than 61

million shoe boxes have been delivered to hurting children in more than 135 countries. The Evangelical Free Church is open for donations Monday, 6pm to 8pm, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thurs-

day, 1:30pm to 3:30pm, Friday, 6pm to 8pm, Saturday, 11am to 2pm, and Sunday, 9am to noon. For more information, please contact Pat DiPalma at kingskids team@yahoo.com.

For more information, visit www.VerengoSolar.com The real estate agents from both the Blairstown and Washington RE/MAX Ridge offices treated nearly 2,000 North Warren County children and parents to a wondrous Halloween party on Main Street in Blairstown. The festivities started with the childrens parade down historic Main Street on their way to the annual Halloween Rotary Club- sponsored costume competition at the North Warren Farm seed house parking lot. However, as happens each year since RE/MAX Ridge commenced its annual Halloween party in 2005, many contestants veered off course just long enough to enter through the front door of the RE/MAX Ridge office on 8 Main Street enjoy some treats and excitement within and exit through the side door to rejoin the parade. Following the judging of costumes the children trick-or-treated in the area for the next few hours. Neither darkness nor chill could keep them and their parents away from the creative and generous participating downtown homes and businesses. Carol Ruddy, a RE/MAX Ridge sales associate and Halloween party coordinator explained, Its so exciting to watch a sea of 100s of parading children moving towards you en masse knowing many of them are going to squeeze through the entryway all at once. Its the start of a very busy and fun-filled evening. Each year RE/MAX Ridge chooses a theme, a closely held secret that both parents and children look forward to discovering on Halloween night. In the previous 6 years characters from The Wizard of Oz, The Pirates of the Caribbean, The Roaring Twenties, The Big-Top Circus, Mother

Goose Nursery Rhymes and Alice In Wonderland entertained the children. This year it was the popular characters from Sesame Street and The Muppets that thrilled the children. Kermit The Frog, a.k.a. Gail Masson-Romano said We had a lot of fun once again transforming our real estate office into a place where the children could enjoy so many of their favorite characters. Sesame Street and Muppet songs chimed from speakers everywhere and every wall in the RE/MAX Ridge office was covered with gaily-colored sheets and decorated with familiar sets and life-size balloons of their favorite characters. Big Bird (Tony Cassese) and Miss Piggy (Caitlin Kelly) heartily beckoned the children and parents to enter this years fantasyland. The full-length mascot costumes made all of the childrens beloved characters come to life. The childrens wideeyes and smiles were greeted by Fozzy The Bear (Janet Rasely) on their first leg through the offices. Fozzy treated them to all natural goodies from Natures Harvest Natural Foods. As they moved through the labyrinth of sounds and sights, the children offered great big

hugs (and were greatly hugged in return) by Cookie Monster (Joanne Van Valkenburg) and Elmo (Carolyn Fenton). Even Animal (Ravi Romano) was hugged by some courageous children as he madly pounded on his drums. Cameras were flashing from parents everywhere. Burt and Ernie (Carol Ruddy and Kathy Kalish) adorned every child (and some willing adults) with brightly-colored glow necklaces. The Count (Darryl Malcolm) distributed more Nature Harvest candies to the elated children as they moved onto their next wonderland with great anticipation. For RE/MAX Ridge Real Estate, Halloween is the first leg of a busy year-end schedule of events. Immediately following their Halloween Party they kick off the Toys For Tots collection drive, culminating in their December Party for the children of the surrounding communities featuring Santa and The Grinch amongst other holiday characters. This RE/MAX Ridge party is just one of the many activities set for the Blairstown Business Associations Jingle On Main Street celebration scheduled for Friday evening, December 9th. RE/MAX Ridge offices in Blairstown and Washington are Toys For Tots drop-off centers. Please contribute one or more NEW and UNWRAPPED presents during the month of November and add a glow to the heart of one more child this Christmas season. You can contact RE/MAX Ridge Real Estate at 8 Main Street in Blairstown (908) 362-7200 or at 218 Rte 31 in Washington (908) 689-4444 or toll-free at (800) 9627789.

(NAPSI)Thanksgiv ing is the biggest food holiday of the year, but preparing the feast doesnt have to be stressful if you follow a few simple tips, says Sara Moulton, chef, cookbook author and TV host of Saras Weeknight Meals on PBS. First, decide what kind and what size of turkey youre going to buy, says Moulton. She recommends buying 1 pound of bird per person, to allow for leftovers. If youre

buying a frozen bird, note when to start defrosting it in the fridgeyoull need 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds, she says. Prepare the gravy a day ahead, then marry it to the drippings in roasting pan while the turkey is resting. Other essential dishes to prepare ahead are stuffing, cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes. Cook and rice the potatoes, then refrigerate. On Thanksgiving, nuke them and add softened butter and warm milk.

Another trick to make preparation go more smoothly is to create a timetable listing everything you are going to prepare and when and post it on the fridge, says Moulton. Saras Make-Ahead Gravy, serves 8 Make about cup gravy per person. Youll need that much gravy to pour over everything and have leftovers. For each cup of gravy, use 1 cup broth, 2 tablespoons butter and 2 tablespoons flour. 8 Tbsp. (1 stick)

unsalted butter cup all-purpose flour 4 cups chicken or turkey broth, heated cup dry red or white wine reserved liquid from turkey roasting drippings reserved liquid from turkey resting platterIn medium saucepan over moderate low heat, melt butter. Whisk in flour and cook, whisking, for 5 minutes. Add broth in a stream, whisking to boil. Simmer for 5 minutes. Let gravy cool, transfer to a bowl and cover and chill overnight. Note: The gravy will be thick but youll be adding liquid and thinning it before serving. On Thanksgiving Day, platter your cooked turkey and cover it loosely with foil, pour drippings into a fat separator and discard fat. Place bird roasting pan on two burners of the stovetop and use medium heat. Add wine and reserved drippings, scraping up the brown bits on bottom of pan. Whisk in premade gravy and any

juices from resting turkey; salt and pepper to taste, cooking until hot. Serve with bird. Carving the bird: My last tip to avoid stress: Carve the bird in the kitchen, not at the table and make sure you have a very sharp knife or knives. ChefsChoice Carving TipsAccording to ChefsChoice, knife sharpener manufacturers, sharp knives are not only safer, they will help you smoothly cut thin, even slices without shredding the meat. The ChefsChoice M130 makes sharpening easy. It professionally sharpens, steels and strops all brands and types of knives. Precision guides eliminate guesswork for sharp,

durable edges. (Visit www.chefschoice.com or call 800-342-3255.) After the turkey is cooked (meat thermometer should read 180 when inserted in the thickest part of bird), cool for 20 minutes. Cooling makes meat firmer and easier to slice. Remove and set aside the legs and last joint of each wing. Make a long, deep (to the bone), horizontal base cut into the breast just above wing. Slice down vertically through breast until you meet the original base cut. This will release perfect, even slices. Following these preparation and carving tips can help make your Thanksgiving a meal to remember.
