Creating eSafe HG/XG appliances using a USB key

Introduction
This document describes the steps for creating eSafe HG and XG appliances using a USB Key.

Getting Started
1. 2. Make sure you have a 2GB USB key. Download the following files from Aladdins FTP site: ftp://esafe6:eSafe6togo@ftp.aladdin.com/users/eSafe/esafe6/v7/eSafe7.1-14-20081130.iso ftp://esafe6:eSafe6togo@ftp.aladdin.com/users/eSafe/esafe6/v7/eSafe7.1_USB_stick_v1.32.rar

Preparing the eSafe USB bootable key


1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Connect the 2G USB key to a Windows machine. Format the USB key to FAT. Extract the downloaded RAR file and copy its contents to the USB key. Copy the downloaded ISO file to the /iso/ folder on the USB key. Click Start | Run to open the Windows Command Line. Type CMD.exe. Change the prompt to the USB key drive (e.g. x:, where x presents the USB key drive letter). Run the following command: syslinux.exe ma x: When finished, remove the USB key using the Safely Remove Hardware icon.

Note: - Use only regular clean USB keys (without internal U3 software). - The key must be formatted using the FAT file system. - We recommend using Kingston DataTraveler USB keys. - USB key size is limited to 2 GB due to OS restrictions.

Validating Appliance BIOS Settings


1. At startup, enter the machines BIOS (using the DEL key) and validate or set the Boot Order according to the appliance type as follows: XG-300 appliance
USB DriveKey (C:) Hard Drive (C:) PCI enabled HP NC3731 Multifunction Gigabit Adapter Floppy Drive (A:) Note: - The USB DriveKey should always be the first default boot option. - Validate the order of the USB DriveKey Boot Sequence to force booting from the external USB first.

HG-100 appliance
First Boot Device Second Boot Device Third Boot Device [USB-ZIP] (If Sandisk USB then choose USB-HDD) [HDD-1] [HDD-0]

HG-200 appliance
Hard Disk Boot Priority (2nd line)

Ch1 M: 512MB CompactFlash (or other Compact Flash type that exist) Ch0 M: ST3160812SV First Boot Device: Second Boot Device: [USB-ZIP] (If Sandisk or eToken NG USB then choose USB-HDD) [Hard Disk]

Save your choices and exit from the BIOS.

Note: At the end of the installation, you can leave the settings as is.

Note: The following steps will format all disks and all data will be completely removed from them! The average installation process takes 5-10 minutes.

Insert the USB key to the appliances external USB connector at the back of the appliance, and boot the system. The system will boot from the USB key and the Linux Rescue logo appears.

At the boot prompt, type hg100 or hg200 or xg300 (according to the appliance) and press <Enter>. At the end of the installation process (takes between 5-10 min.) the appliance will automatically shut down (only the screen, not the power).

Remove the USB key, power-off the appliance, wait 5 seconds, and then power-on the appliance again. The installation process will continue automatically (the internal CF/USB content will be copied to the hard drive), followed by two appliance restarts. At the end of the second restart, you can safely shut down the appliance as follows: a. When the eSafe appliance ready prompt appears, press <ALT+F11>. b. Log in to the system using the following credentials: User: root Password: kn1TG7psLu c. Shutdown the system using the poweroff command, and power off the appliance when the Power Down prompt appears.
