whatever they are made of. Most processesspan a mass range of about a factor
of 1000 or so. Note that this attribute is most discriminating at the exrremes;
the vast majority of components are in the 0.1-10 kg range, for which virtually
any processwill work.
It is worth noting what the ranges represent. Each bar spansthe size range of
which the process is capable without undue technical difficulry. All can be
stretched to smaller or larger extremes but at the penalty of extra cost because
the equipment is no longer standard. During screening, therefore,it is important
to recognize'near misses'-processeswhich narrowly failed, but which could, if
needed, be reconsideredand used.
Figure 18.4 shows a secondbar chart: that for the ranges of section thickness
of which each shaping processis capable. It is the lower end of the ranges-the
minimum section thickness-where the physics of the process imposes limits.
Their origins are the subject of the next sub-section.

Powder methods for metals and ceramicstoo dependon flow. FillirE a mold

downand achieveuniform 6lling. This may be followed bv compression ('cold
compaction').Oncetullofpowder, the mold is heatedto allow densificationby
Ls sintering or, if the pressureis maintained, by hot isostatic pressing (HIPing) -
Metal shapingby de{ormation-hot or cold rolling, {orging or extrusion-also

100000. Table 18.5 lists the constraints. The lower part of the table flagsup
key process-sensitiveoutcomes which cannot be checked by screening, but
should be investigated by a documentation search for the processesthat suc
cessfully passthe screeningsteps.
Part The constraints are plofted on the compatibllity matrices and bar charts of
dte Figures18.2-18.4, 18.11 and 18.12. The material compatibilitychan shows
only three processgroups for ceramics, and all three can handle the required
shape.A1l ttuee can cope with the massand the section thickness. All three can
also meet the quality constraints on roughnessand tolerance, althougl powder

Compression molding is itlst beyondits normal massmnge. All threeProcesses
cof meet the targets for tolerance and roughness. The final bar chart shows that
lF- rnachining is not economic for tle given batch size, but the other two are
acceptable. Table18.8 summarizes the survivingprocesses.

using uniaxial loading and open dies. Following up the avoidance o{ defects,a
i documentation search is principally a matter of good die design with correct
location of the runners and risers.
