PREFATORY NOTE This edition of Vivaldi's Sonata in C minor for oboe and basso continuo, Fanna XV n. 2, is based on an urtext found in the Saxon State Library in Dresden. ‘The ornamented versions printed above the original oboe lines in the slow movements are improvisational in nature and are intended to suggest some possibilities for embellishment of the original. The player is encouraged to develop a personal style of embellishment, toward which the realizations provided ‘may serve as a point of departure. In the third movement itis recommended that, in keeping with the convention of Vivaldi's time, the performer play the original part the first time through and play the ornamented version in the repeat. ‘The phrasing and dynamic indications likewise are editorial suggestions fashioned in accord with baroque performance practice.
