Holy Week is the set of religious celebrations that take place during the last week of Lent, between
Palm Sunday and Resurrection Sunday, that is, Easter Day. The festivities commemorate the last
moments of Jesus' life: Palm Sunday is the day that celebrates Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, Maundy
Thursday is the date of the Last Supper, Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion, Saturday Holy
is a day of mourning and, finally, Easter Sunday the resurrection is celebrated.
They are a series of festivities focused on liturgical rituals, although family gatherings with large
meals are also held, and some presents are characteristic, such as the palm or the mona.
On the occasion of this festivity, processions are also held in Barcelona that stage passages from
the life of Christ, copied, in part, from Andalusian customs.
Reason: Holy Week is the Christian holiday that remembers the last moments of Christ on Earth:
the passion, death and resurrection; that is, from the moment he arrives in Jerusalem proclaimed
Savior, until he is prosecuted, killed and buried and resurrected.
Origins: In the year 325, the Council of Nicaea set the date for celebrating Easter for the entire
Western Catholic community. From that moment on, and always based on the Gospel story, each
country has built its own set of celebrations. Despite the variants and the difference in local
customs, the main purpose is to celebrate or remember the passion, death and resurrection of the
Messiah.
