Ceratostigma Willmottianum

Ceratostigma is named for the horn-like excrescence on the stigma of the flower
Willmottianum after Miss Ellen Ann Willmott (1860-1934) who grew the new plants
arriving for the first time into cultivation

Shrub

Max height: 3ft

- Diamond-shaped, deciduous leaves which are hairy with marginal bristles.

- Leaves have a reddish tinge, which increases with autumn colour

- Comes from west China - west Sichuan, and Tibet

- Blue flowers last from July well into the autumn.

- Lobes are bright blue, tube is red and the white stigmas are protruding.

- Responds better to well drained soil and a sunny position

- Popular for its longevity of flowering; its relative ease of cultivation; and its lack of
pests and diseases.
Fagus sylvatica ‘Dawyck’
- Aka: Beech

- Native to Europe (originates from a tree found in Scotland)

- Deciduous

- Grows tall and relatively straight (fastigiated i.e. A tall, narrow tree form with a
strong central leader and branch attachments at acute angles)

- Slow growth rate

- Good autumnal colouring

- Prefers well drained soil

- Deep purple leaves; slightly narrow, open form

Aka: Elm

- Deciduous

- Considerable level of resistance against Dutch Elm Disease

- A very fast-growing tree with upright branches

- Leaves are dark-green, glabrescent, up to 10 cm in length (glabrescent = smooth,


without hairs)

- The fruit is a round samara (samara = a type of fruit in which a flattened wing of
fibrous, papery tissue develops from the ovary wall. a simple dry fruit without a seam)
In elm trees the seed is in the centre of the wing.

- The cultivar is named for the 16th century Flemish physician and botanist Rembert
Dodoens.
Acer platanoides ‘Crimson King’
- Comes from the sycamore family or aceraceae

- Native to Europe

- Deciduous

- Max height: 70 - 80 ft

- Rounded crown, densely branched

- Often wider than tall when open grown

- Leaves emerge bright crimson and deepen to maroon, which persists throughout the
growing season. This particular cultivar grows slower than the species.

- Light green leaves with a prominent white edge.

- Frequently reverts and green sections must be removed or they will overgrow
variegated sections because of their greater vigour

- Very similar to willmottianum but with less flowers and more foliage

- Grows to double the height of Willmottianum

- The web like protrusions from the leaves catch dew or rainwater giving a smoke-
like effect

- The more exposed to sunshine , the more purple its leaves
