The first, natural source of light is the sun, which dafines not only space but also time with its ‘changing colours and shadows. This property is used wisely by Japanese architecture to create tranquil, peacevflled atmospheres where light is totally diffused as it enters - Tadao Ando's ‘Museum of light in Shiga - or dark, sombre atmospheres where light is framed to centre the gaze.
