OVEMBER 6, 2011 THIRTY-SECO D SU DAY I ORDI ARY TIME

Every scout knows the motto, "Be Prepared." Even the general public commonly associates the words with scouting. What's less wellknown is that Robert Baden-Powell describes this preparedness as being in a state of readiness of both mind and body. For him, to be prepared in mind meant that a scout had thought out beforehand any situation that might occur, so that he or she would know the right thing to do at the right moment, and be willing to do it. Being prepared in body meant that a scout would be strong and active and able to do the right thing at the right moment. The Gospel parable of the wise and foolish virgins could be said to be an example of Baden-Powell's scouting philosophy. The wise virgins were prepared in mind. They had thought through the process recognizing that if the bridegroom were to be delayed they would need extra oil to keep their lamps burning. Of course the parable is not about scouting. But we who await the arrival of the bridegroom, Jesus Christ, should be prepared just as readily as any scout. For us being prepared to "do the right thing at the right moment" means that we have formed our consciences in line with the moral teaching of Christ and that we are ready to act as a Christian in the face of injustice and immorality. It means that we have chosen a way of life that aligns our actions with the teachings of the Gospel, prepared to help those in need. We Christians have waited a long time for the return of the Lord. In that time we have fed the poor, tended the sick, educated the young, sheltered the homeless, preached the Gospel, and championed the oppressed. Not everything that we have done has been perfect, because we are still sinners. We still have much left to do to prepare ourselves for the bridegroom's coming.
