ENGLISH ACHIEVEMENT

THE AFFECTS OF INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIP, MOTIVATION, AND FAMILY ON ENGLISH ACHIEVEMENT CHAPTER 1 RESEARCH PROBLEM

1.1 Introduction The purpose of this research is to determine whether the interpersonal relationship, motivation, and in family affect to the English Achievement. This chapter will explain the background of research, statement of the research problem, purpose of research, definition of term and summary.

1.2 Background of Research Lately, English achievement of most students in both the secondary schools is deteriorating. The teaching of English in school does affect English learning for some students, but it creates significant problems for others. School had tried to solve some of these problems, but still could not improve English achievement of these students.

1.3 Statement of Research Problem The literature of English achievement indicated that interpersonal relationship is necessary for students to understand any new English content. Beside motivation, most of past research showed that proper teaching English can improve students performance in English. Lately, research on English learning discovered that family facilitate English learning. The theoretical framework of the research is given in figure 1.1. This Research attempted to determine whether desire to learn, motivation, and interpersonal relationship to the effective teaching.

Figure 1.1 Theoretical Framework of The Research 1.4 Purpose of Research The purpose of research was to determine whether the desire to learn, motivation, and interpersonal relationship affect to English achievement. The objective of this research was : 1.4.1 Research Objective a) To determine the effect of interpersonal relationship on English achievement. b) To determine the effect of motivation on English achievement. c) To determine the effect of family on English achievement. 1.4.2 Research Question a) How the interpersonal relationship influence to the English achievement. b) How the motivation influence to the English achievement. c) How the family influence to the English achievement. 1.4.3 Research hypotheses a) There is no difference in English achievement between students with low and high interpersonal relationship. b) There is no difference in English achievement between students who are taught using direct instruction and cooperative learning in motivation. c) There is no difference in English achievement between students with low and high family.

1.5 Importance of Research The findings of this research hopefully will create awareness among school administrators and English teachers of the necessity to prepare students with desire to learn and interpersonal knowledge before teaching new English content. The findings also will help English teachers to choose appropriate English learning motivation to improve students English achievement.

1.6 Limitations of Research This research was carried out on one secondary schools in Kota Kinabalu area with a sample of 20 students. The interpersonal relationship, motivation, and family were into only one category. The instruments were limited to collect data from the students because the different schedule for students in one school and the process will take time.

1.7 Definition of Terms

a) English achievement English achievement can be define of person to apply speaking, listening, writing and reading on their daily life. b) Interpersonal relationship Interpersonal relationship can be defined as an association between two or more people that may range from fleeting to enduring. People in an interpersonal relationship may interact overtly, covertly, face to face and anonymously. Interpersonal relationships occur between people who fill each others explicit or implicit physical or emotions needs I some way. Your interpersonal relationships may occur with friends, family, co-workers, strangers, chat room participants, doctor and client. In this research, interpersonal relationship was measured.

c) Motivation

Motivation has been defined in numerous ways. One of the best is motivation is the forces acting either on or within a person to initiate behaviour. In the field of psychology, human motivation has long been studied as a way to explain an individuals behaviour. In reality, motivation is inferred rather than measured. The inference is made due to behavioural changes that result from external stimuli. d) Family Family is a group of people affiliated by consanguinity, affinity, or co-residence. In most societies it is the principal institution for the socialization of children. Extended from the human "family unit" by biological-cultural affinity, marriage, economy, culture, tradition, honor, and friendship are concepts of family that are physical and metaphorical, or that grow increasingly inclusive extending to community, village, city, region, nation hood, global

village and humanism. A family group consisting of a father, mother and their children is called a nuclear family. This term can be contrasted with an extended family.

1.8 Summary This research was carried out to improve students in English achievement. The purpose of this research was to determine whether desire to learn, motivation, and interpersonal relationship affect to English achievement. The research, which was conducted in one secondary school in Kota Kinabalu area, used teacher-made tests to collect the required research data.
