Signals & Systems, 3 Ed.; Chen, Oxford University Press, 2004 Contribution to the Professional Component: 1. Engineering Science Topics - 3.0 credits 2. Engineering Design Topics - 0.0 credits Contribution to Program Outcomes and IEEE Program Criteria: This is a key course to measure outcomes (in bold): k, 2, 3, 4, 5 (the course instructor has a commitment to measure the underlined part of these outcomes on a regular basis, and to show documented evidence to prove its achievement). Outcome k: Ability to use the techniques (k1), skills (k2), and modern engineering tools (k3) necessary for engineering practice. IEEE Criteria 2: Knowledge of mathematics through differential and integral calculus, basic sciences, computer science and engineering sciences necessary to analyze and design complex electrical and electronic devices, software, and systems containing hardware and software components, as appropriate to program objectives (2) IEEE Criteria 3: Knowledge of differential equations (3) IEEE Criteria 4: Knowledge of linear algebra (4) IEEE Criteria 5: Knowledge of complex variables (5) Course Objectives: 1. Explain the dynamical behavior of continuous and discrete-time linear systems using block diagrams. (k3, 2, 3, 5) 2. Describe continuous and discrete-time signals using the step function operator. (2) 3. Calculate a continuous-time linear system response to a signal using the convolution integral. (2) 4. Describe a continuous-time signal and its energy content using the Fourier analysis. (2, 4, 5) 5. Calculate a discrete-time linear system response to a signal using the convolution summation. (2) 6. Apply the z-transform to evaluate the response of a discrete-time system to a signal. (2, 5) 7. Evaluate the response of a continuous-time state-space linear system. (k3, 2, 3, 4, 5) 8. Apply software tools like MATLAB to evaluate continuous and discrete time signals and system responses. (k3, 2, 3, 4, 5)
